A quick update on this. I'll be taking over for Ike as TD of this tournament. I will make periodic updates to the field in this post.

This is an announcement for the THUNDER II mirror held at UIUC on December 4, 2010. See here for further information.

Location
This tournament will be held in David Kinley Hall (DKH) and Wohler's Hall which is located on Gregory Drive, just south of the Main Library. The full address for DKH is:
1407 W Gregory Dr
Urbana, IL 61801
A map of the location can be found here.
Tournament central will be in Room 114 (first floor, big lecture room). This is where you should start and end the day. It is also where you can go to have questions answered.

There is ample parking in the area, including lot E-3, which is right next to the Main Library and less than 5 minutes from DKH. Parking is free in this lot on Saturdays.

Who can play this tournament?
I will use the same eligibility criteria as stated in the main thread. High school teams can play this tournament. You should contact me if you have any questions about your eligibility or if you want to play on a mixed team.

Since I am receiving more than one question on this, I will address open teams at the UIUC mirror. I will tentatively allow open teams consisting of players not currently in college; thus, high schoolers can play with high schoolers from other schools, high schoolers can play with college graduates, and college graduates can play with each other. Open teams are only guaranteed to play this tournament if they bring a qualified moderator*.

What kind of difficulty can I expect?
Regular difficulty. Again, see the main thread for more details.

Costs and other discounts
Base fee: $100
Buzzer discount: -$5 each
Moderator: -$10 each
Travel: -$10 if over 200 miles one-way as determined by Mapquest. If you turn on the avoid tolls and / or avoid highways function, it has to be at least over 30,000 miles before you can claim this discount.

Contact Information
If you wish to attend this tournament, or if you have any questions about it, you can e-mail the Tournament Director, me, at [email protected]. Please inform me as to the number of teams, buzzers, and moderators you intend to bring, as well as whether or not you believe you qualify for the travel discount.

UIC Campus Programs just informed me how they are willing to provide Saturday trip(s) for players to sites like yours. They seem to be under the impression that UIUC would host NAQT SCT on February 5, 2011. Regardless, at least I can attend this December 4 mirror. While our two buzzer systems worked last month, I cannot speak for their availability.

Happy imminent Guy Fawkes Day,
Rom

UIUC is in fact the midwest SCT host.
What parts of the country are Wisconsin and Ohio in then?

Assuming we get our payment for EFT to you (it's coming, Anant says), you can put us down for a team and no buzzers.

Minnesota may be sending one team to this. (This is entirely up in the air and depends on people's finals schedules/available funding/interest.)

There's a possibility of a WKU team coming to this, but this depends on transportation/if enough people are interested.

Field and logistics information updated in my first post in this thread. Note the current soft cap of 18 teams and the process if more than 18 teams register and I do not have enough moderators to run a tournament with more than 18 teams.

We're bringing 3 buzzers.

I have updated my first post to include my policy on open teams. I have also updated the Rom team to include names of people that I hear are interested in playing this tournament, but have not found other open team members.

As it stands now, I should have 10 guaranteed moderators, with a possibility of 4 more. This means this field should include no less than 20 teams. I would personally like to see this tournament run with 24 teams (so please bring your potential moderators NIU and U Chicago!). Please also confirm the number of teams you will be bringing to this tournament by Thanksgiving if you have not already done so.

As a side note, IE sucks when it comes to editing posts on these forums. Stupid ICS Wohler's lab not having a working version of Firefox.

It wasn't that I couldn't work IE, it was that it kept jumping the screen all over the place while I was editing my first post in this thread. [/end of this pointless aside]

That check should definitely be mailed by this point. Also we will bring 1 buzzer, but it'll only have 6 working lights (Zeecraft). It's not adequate, but it's better than slap bowl.

Chances that Eyes That Do Not See II will be mirrored afterwards? I'd be willing to contribute a laptop/moderate it.

We have rooms until late at night, but no projector to run the tournament on. If enough people are interested I will try to find a projector or a bunch of laptops for this.

Having not heard from a member of their school, I am left to assume that the following schools will bring the following number of teams:

WUSTL - 1
Michigan - 2
Wisconsin - 1
Notre Dame - 0
Northwestern - 0 (I still have yet to receive a check. The moment I receive one I will reverse this)

This leaves the tournament at 16 teams. Please get back to me as to how many teams your school will bring if your school is listed in this post.

As I will arrive Friday night and leave Sunday morning, I would like to stay for Mike Bentley's 2nd visual experience. I had to turn in my LCD projector this past June, but I have my own laptop. I am amenable to any and all free agents onto my team (entry fee on me, of course) if that would make brackets more manageable. With 16 squads, would we begin with 2 pools?

Sorry about the Broncos end to their title dreams,
Rom

If "Eyes..." happens, I'd like to play (and not moderate) but could contribute a laptop.

It appears there is enough interest in running Eyes That Do Not See II, so I will work on obtaining a projector for this. I will likely run this as a shootout and moderate this myself. Don't forget to bring the $5 that Mike Bentley is asking as a mirror fee.

As for THUNDER II, I have heard that there will be 14-15 packets. If it continues to be 16 teams, I will run the tournament with 2 brackets of 8 and rebracket into 4 brackets of 4. If we get up to 18 teams, I will run 3 brackets of 6 and rebracket into another 3 brackets of 6. I would prefer to: 1) avoid an odd number of teams; and 2) avoid being surprised with more teams than I expected to show up (so get back to me WUSTL, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Notre Dame).

I would like to join Rom's team, assuming this tournament is adequately moderated and staffed. Otherwise, I'm more than happy to moderate.

I would just like to remind everyone that this tournament is taking place in David Kinley Hall, not the English Building. There is a link to a campus map in my first post. Please try to be there before 9:00 AM, especially if you have a buzzer, so we can start this tournament on time.

Northern Illinois University regrets to announce that, due to weather conditions and and driver Brad Fischer's unanticipated illness, NIU will not be at the Tournament today. We apologize that this is last minute, and hope the inconvenience is manageable. Thanks, and we wish everyone a fun game day (and safe driving).

I want to thank all of the moderators that showed up and made this tournament possible: Dayne Rogers, David Riley, Craig Messner, Ike Jose, Zack Moser, Mark Taylor, David Garb, Mike Laudermith, Adam Fifield, Jeff Geringer, Dillon Li, and Billy Busse. I hope all of the teams that attended this site found the tournament enjoyable despite the various setbacks, late start time, and late end time of this tournament. Hopefully I will have all of the rounds of the next tournament I TD so I don't have to delay game play.

This was my most enjoyable, productive full-length quiz-bowl tournament of 2010. It was my first tourney at UIUC without seeing Sorice, The Donald, and Tryg anywhere, but Charles, Craig, Garb, & Jeff all made me feel appreciated as their captain. At first, I felt that I was taking a spot on the House team that could have gone to freshmen who wanted real game experience, but I was assured otherwise. Adam, Billy, Dillon, & Zack also made great additions to Rom & House. Other commitments by some of those afforementioned 8 necessitated our team being duos in the afternoon, but I still had enthusiastic fun nonetheless.

In 2010, I attended 12 major motorsports racing weekends (2 by SWA to FLL & 10 by Rommobile), and I made 5 other flights (BOS, OAK, LAX, IAD, & PDX). Soon after CO, I had a stretch of 5 straight racing weekends before I started flying to races in Miami. I still managed to drive to 7 busy quiz-bowl Saturdays/weekends. I hope to attend at least 7 meets in 2011, but I also intend on topping 12 competitive racing weekends, starting with Speedweeks at Daytona Beach next February. I just might even be able to take my 4 young girl cats to a friends' house in May throughout 100th anniversary Indy 500 practice!

Congratulations to my man Kyle Busch (#18, #18, & #18) & Samantha Sarcinella on their wedding in 3 weeks,
Rom
