March Madness comes early this year: Top 64 Christmas Songs
Ho-ho-ho! This year we will be voting on a new tournament of awesome: the most awesome Christmas songs.
Christmas need not be a time for terrible renditions of "Santa Baby" and "Feliz Navidad" at the grocery store. And for writing "Wonderful Christmastime," Paul McCartney should only drop dead. Internet quizbowl personalities have chosen these 64 songs as the best alternatives that Christmas has to offer, and it will be up to you to vote on them.
Suggested criteria include: Christmas-ness, quality, and how far the song fits our mission statement of not being something you would hear on a Muzak soundtrack.
The full bracket is provided below. Open voting with Youtube links to the songs will commence tomorrow for the Hannukah in Santa Monica Regional with the play-in game.

Voting for Brick, but only because it is the 23rd most conservative rock song of all time.

Re: March Madness comes early this year: Top 64 Christmas Songs
The problem with this is "Brick" is probably one of the handful of songs on this entire list that people actually know (and know they like). I would say that already it has as good of a chance as any to win it all.
I'll listen to these later and vote.

Brick is a good song, but I don't think of it as a Christmas song and it certainly ain't gonna top Fairytale of New York. FAIRYTALE
I will pass for now on the 8/9 matchup.
PATRICK SWAYZE CHRISTMAS
Emmet Otter's Jug Band Christmas was one of my favorites as a lad, and I will take it. BAR-B-QUE

I see Elvis' Blue Christmas. There is, however, a marked absence of Judy Garland, Slade, and Bing Crosby herein. Therefore, this tournament is invalid.

Shawn, my attempts to nominate Bing Crosby songs were defeated by the point that nobody likes those songs unironically. I resigned myself that this is the "Non-Muzak Christmas Song Contest," although frankly, that invalidates several of these nominees. Neverthless, my picks to win remain unfazed.

Going with:
Fairytale of New York, and I'm saying this as a guy who really loved Ben Folds Five.
What Child, Nowell, though I Saw Daddy Kissing Santa Claus was enjoyable as well
Let's Have a Patrick Swayze Christmas
Bar-B-Que. You always have to have a 5-12 upset!

I'd better vote so that Brick doesn't go on some sort of inexplicable Cinderella run!
Fairytale, Tori Amos, MST3K, Bar-B-Que.

Fairytale, just because it doesn't have a conservative political message.

Pretty sure BF isn't arguing "people should be banned from getting abortions" with that song. Rather, he's just chronicling the emotional trauma associated with an actual experience from his life (according to an interview I read a few years ago, this actually happened, at least approximately). I don't think "abortions are emotionally traumatic" is a particularly conservative (or, for that matter, bad to hear) message.Joe N wrote:Fairytale, just because it doesn't have a conservative political message.

Or maybe there's an ongoing joke about its "conservatism" in the thread?

What Child, Nowell. Gotta go with the Richard Montgomery alum.
I'll have to listen to the rest later.
