Though more details will emerge in a bit, my idea was to have it set somewhere between Fall and Regionals. Is there an adjective for that? Is that what "Standard difficulty" is these days?

Anyway, this will be a packet submission event (or, rather, this will be an event in which entry fees will be much, much higher for those who do not submit packets than for those who do). So, those of you who plan to write - which I hope are several of you - can help me attain this difficulty by erring on the side of ease when it comes to answers; I'm not going to forbid a tossup on Cernunnos, for example, but if the choice came down to writing on that or Ares, I'd ask you write the one on Ares (and I'd substitute an easier RPM question from your set in lieu of the Cernunnos if one existed).

Does that makes sense?

Assuming we do get to attend, which will highly depend on me being off that Saturday, this will be our first attempt at writing a packet. As a matter of fact I may be the only one who participates in writing it, so as a forewarning excuse the craptastic packet from Snead.

Pardon me for cluttering the board with this (I would said this privately, but I don't have your e-mail address), but I wanted to comment on this bit.

My response is this: ideally, your packet won't suck. You may very well be like one of those A students who keeps clamoring for extra credit even though their final average hovers around a 97 or so; that is to say, overly worried without cause. On the other hand, even if it does, there are ways to diminish whatever suck might otherwise find its way in; this fine board has lots of advice, some of it quite excellent, on how to write good questions.

All of this notwithstanding, if it turns out that you still have the lingering suspicion that your packet is terrible, don't let it stop you from writing one. For one thing, almost no one's first packet is awesome. For another, as long as you adhere to the distribution which will probably be posted any day now, I can fix suck (although there are some circuit veterans who would probably disagree, ha-ha). Not only that, but I will be happy to talk with you on the specific ways I repaired some of the suck, for future reference.

One thing I would ask, though, is that if you believe your packet is indeed awful, send it to me as early as you can; it is much easier to fix suck with ample time, something which should be obvious to any editor but which sadly took painful experience to teach me.

Thanks for considering coming to the tournament.

Moon Pie Classic at UT-Chattanooga 4/30/2011: basics

by Your Genial Quizmaster
As previously announced, the UTC Academic Trivia Association will host our 13th annual Moon Pie (TM) Classic on Sat., April 30, 2011. This will be a one-day academic quizbowl tournament, held on the campus of the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. The tournament is designed for collegiate teams, but we will accept open teams, space permitting.

Again, Moon Pie will be followed by the RC Cola trash tournament (a mirror of FOGHAT, open to all comers) on Sun., May 1 -- details will follow separately in the Trash forum.

We will have two divisions, based on experience level, with the same questions used for both divisions. Question level should therefore be easy to moderate by current circuit standards; more on this will follow in the next message. Packet submission is not required, but the base fee of $100 per team assumes some amount of question writing (again, see next message.) Discounts can be earned to bring that all the way to $0. Maximum fee with penalty is $150.

SCHEDULE: Registration will begin at 9 AM EDT 4/30/11, with announcements and schedule adjustments at 9:45 and tournament play beginning at 10 AM. Tournament HQ will be 129 Grote Hall on the UTC campus; see directions below. We hope to be into playoffs by 7 PM and finished by 8:30 PM, but this is subject to change depending on the field size.

REGISTRATION: Our only pre-registration requirements are that you tell us (preferably by March 22):

* How many teams to expect
* In which division each team will compete
* How many buzzers and officials (if any) you expect to bring
* Whether or not you're submitting questions, and which option you're choosing (see next message.)

Please e-mail this information to utcquizbowl [at] gmail [dot] com. Also, if your team includes players with disabilities or access issues, it will simplify things if you let us know in advance. That way we can take it into account when scheduling (building changes, etc.)

Payment, rosters, etc., can be handled on the day of the tournament. Payment is expected on tournament day unless arranged otherwise in advance. If you need an invoice or other official paperwork in advance, let us know and we'll be happy to oblige.

ELIGIBILITY: This tournament is designed for teams of current college students, with all players on a given team affiliated with the same university. If space permits, we will accept mixed-affiliation or purely open (i.e., non-collegiate) teams. However, the field is limited to 36 teams, and collegiate teams will be given first priority.

The tournament field will be divided into two divisions for separate play and awards. Division II will be limited to players in their first and second year of intercollegiate quizbowl play, with one extra year of eligibility allowed for players on teams from 2-year schools. (Note: due to the difference in formats, prior experience in College Bowl Inc., Honda Campus All-Star Challenge, or tournaments restricted to junior colleges will not count as prior experience when determining Division II eligibility.)

FEES: Base fee: $100. Base fee assumes full packet of 25 tossups and 25 bonuses, meeting specifications below, submitted by 12:01 AM Eastern Standard Time, Sun., April. 17th. Packet must be original and must be blind to all other teams, including those from the same school. There are significant packet and other discounts available, so you could work your fees down to $0. Deadlines, discounts (packet and other), and packet specifications will follow in the next message.

CONTACTS: The tournament director is your genial quizmaster, Charlie Steinhice, while Seth Kendall is editor-in-chief. For further information contact:

General tournament business (inquiries, registration, etc.): utcquizbowl [at] gmail [dot] com
Packet submission -- note new e-mail: utcacfediting [at] gmail [dot] com
Snail mail: UTC A.T.A., c/o Charlie Steinhice, 8821 Winterberry Rd., Chattanooga, TN 37421.

Moon Pie Classic at UT-Chattanooga 4/30/2011: packet specs

Posted: Tue Mar 01, 2011 10:58 pm
by Your Genial Quizmaster
Here are packet details provided by Seth Kendall, this year's editor-in-chief, along with fee discount/penalty information.

PACKET DISCOUNTS:

The overriding interest for this year’s Moon Pie Classic is the production of quality packets. The organization is quite prepared to make minimal – even no - profit on this year’s tournament if it will ensure excellent questions. Therefore, we would like to make the following offer: If you write us a full 25/25 of questions by MARCH 22ND, of which 21/20 are 100 percent usable (meaning, with the only thing to be done to them being cosmetic – reformatting, spellcheck, scrambling, etc.), your entry fee will be $20. If same is provided by April 3rd, the entry fee will be $40; by April 10th, $60.

So, what does “usable” mean? It means that the questions must adhere to the set level of difficulty (more in a moment) and be the sort of clue-dense, pyramidal questions which have become standard for most ACF events. Please consult such excellent tournament sets as the ACF Falls for guidance on this.

On the other hand, packets seen by fellow players from your school WHO ARE NOT ON YOUR TEAM not on your team or by anyone else not on your team do not fall into this category. This also goes for questions whose language is taken wholesale from obvious recognizable sources such Benet’s Reader’s Encyclopedia, Encyclopaedia Britannica, and the detested Wikipedia. FINALLY, IT GOES FOR ANY QUESTIONS NOT WRITTEN BY (or for) YOUR TEAM. EVIDENCE OF PLAGIARISM FROM OTHER PACKETS WILL RESULT IN FORFEITURE OF ANY DISCOUNT AND PAYMENT OF THE FULL $100 BASE FEE PLUS THE $50 NO PACKET FEE.

Other discounts/penalties:

A full packet of questions which can be made usable with work (which shows effort, in other words) by March 22nd: $40 discount off of $100 base fee (total fee: $60)
* by April 3rd: $25 discount (total fee: $75)
* by April 10th: $ 15 discount (total fee $85)
* by 11:59 PM April 16th: $ 5 discount (total fee: $95)
* by 12:01 AM April 24th: $10 penalty (fee: $110)
* No discount will be given for packets received after April 25th without prior arrangement and a really good reason.

PARTIAL PACKET DISCOUNTS FOR LESS EXPERIENCED TEAMS

Less experienced teams, with prior approval, may choose to submit partial packets for more modest discounts. We would expect 12 tossups and 12 bonuses which can be made usable, with a minimum 1/1 each of chemistry, biology, and physics. If approved, you may submit such a partial packet by March 31 for a $10 discount (total fee $90) or by April 10 with no discount or penalty (fee $100.) If you are interested, please contact Seth Kendall at utcacfediting [at] gmail [dot] com and summarize your team’s level of experience for consideration.

Teams that do not wish to submit packets may elect not to do so and still play. However, this will involve paying an additional $50 fee over the base fee (total: $150), and we must be notified of this decision at utcacfediting [at] gmail [dot] com BYAPRIL 15TH.

OTHER DISCOUNTS

* For working lockout buzzer system: - $5 per buzzer for up to 3 buzzers
* For competent full-time official for either Moon Pie or RC Cola [plus dinner at Provino's Sat. night if you can join us]: - $10
* For teams making their first appearance at UTC: - $20 ($10 for second teams et seq. from the same school).

Note that excellent, punctual writers with two buzzer systems and a competent official could end up paying $0, although discounts end there.

PACKET SPECIFICATIONS:

We'll say it again: Every team's questions must remain blind to the other teams from the same school.

DESTINATION: Seth Kendall will serve as editor-in-chief. To make sure any house team from UTC does not have access to the questions, please send packets to utcacfediting [at] gmail [dot] com, rather than the UTC team e-mail address listed above for registration.

DEGREE OF DIFFICULTY: As noted above, we will have two divisions, based on experience level, with the same questions used for both divisions. Since the tournament is at the end of the season, question level should be moderate to easy by current circuit standards (or “standard difficulty level”, whatever that actually means). For tossups, this means first and foremost that the answers of almost all tossups should be well-known: if in doubt, select to write on “The Scarlet Letter” instead of “My Kinsman, Major Molineux”. Tossups should have early clues that are challenging but by the end should have giveaways making it answerable by almost anyone in the room. Bonuses should be such that a novice team stands a good chance of getting at least 10 pts., a good team 20, and the best teams all 30 pts. If you're just dying to ask something that's pretty obscure, at least confine it to one bonus part. Anyone who would like sample questions, please let us know at utcacfediting [at] gmail [dot] com and we'll e-mail you some.

EXCLUSIVITY: This is the third time we've said this, but we can't stress this enough: Packets must be unique to each *team*, and blind to all other teams including the others from your school. Since we may have mirror events scheduled elsewhere, questions must be original and blind to teams elsewhere in the country. Please do not play-test them online in advance.

FORMAT: -- Please arrange questions separately by category. If you want to make life easier for us, separate tossups and bonuses, and use the order of categories below. -- Please e-mail the packet as either an MS Word or RTF file, with the essential parts of the answer in bold and underlined. -- Make sure the words "for ten points" or abbreviation "FTP" appear in each tossup shortly before the final clue. -- Please insert the word "Answer:" followed by a single tab before each answer. -- Ideally, titles of books, plays, periodicals, films, TV series, and works of art should be italicized, while titles of songs, short stories, and TV series episodes should be placed in quotes. But we're not going to penalize you if you don't.

DISTRIBUTION: For a full packet, we ask for 25 tossups and 25 bonuses per packet, distributed as follows.

A) Literature: 5 tossups, 5 bonuses. Of these, at least 1/1 must be on European works/authors, and at least 1/1 on World (specifically, Asian, African, South American) works authors.

B) Sciences (including math): 5/5. Of these, at least 1/1 each of biology, physics, and chemistry. If you have a second question from any of these categories, try to make them from a different subcategory (e.g. two physics bonuses would be fine, but two on thermodynamics would be sub-optimal).

C) History: 5/5. Of these, no more than 2/2 on US history; at least 1/1 on events/people in the 20th/21st century, at least 1/1 pre-500 CE, and least 1/1 non-Europe/US.

D) Philosophy/religion/myth: 3/3. Of these, not more than 1/2 or 2/1 philosophy; at least one question (tossup or bonus) apiece religion and mythology.

E) Fine arts: 3/3. Of these, at least one question (tossup or bonus) must be on either sculpture or architecture, and no more than 2/2 painting, film, or classical music.

F) Social sciences: 1/1

G) Geography: 1/1

H) Your choice: 2/2. Anything goes, provided the minima amounts above have been provided for. This includes pop culture, current events, or other topics in which you may have already made your maximum.

STYLE: You probably already know the basics, but just in case: --- Tossups -- average length 3 sentences. Please include a unique clue early to avoid any ambiguity. We want questions that begin with lesser-known details and gradually get easier. And please don't violate the pronoun rule -- e.g.,, if your first pronoun is "He..." or "She...", the answer should be a person, not an object or the title of a work. --- Bonuses -- each bonus worth a possible 30 pts., preferably with 3 or 4 related answers.

Do we have any information on the field that isn't posted in this thread? I've already taken a vacation day on April 29 for travel purposes, but I want to hold off on buying airline tickets until I'm sure that there's sufficient interest for the event to happen.

To answer your question: yes, there is a little more interest. There will probably be at least one open team here (and said team indicated there will be a packet written, which makes me very happy), and my current institution will also likely field one. That would put semi-official interest in this event at about seven teams, and this in the absence of other clubs which typically come to UTC events.

My suspicion, therefore, is that this tournament will fly. Before you commit to flying, however, I'd advise you to give it two weeks to see if anything develops; Chattanooga can be a fun town, but probably not the best possible use of your vacation dollars in the absence of a tournament. Also, I'd very much like it if I charged you a pittance for this event, which, as you have doubtless observed, can be made to happen if you can write me a good packet over the next three weeks. In fact, I would be overjoyed if I didn't have to charge any team coming more than $75, so please help me make no money by writing good packets.

Thanks again for your interest.

Excellent; we look forward to seeing you.
49-Mile Scenic Drive wrote:Packet should be forthcoming whenever I can get time to do it.
Even more excellent. Remember my advice from earlier; I doubt your packet will be as bad as you think if you model yourself on some of the tournaments I suggested you look at (and while you're at it, it might be well for your squad to start practicing those if you don't already, so as to prepare yourself for this event), but even if it is, get it to me soon so I can buff out the rough spots.
49-Mile Scenic Drive wrote:If Division matters, we're DII.
Traditionally, UTC has broken teams into different Divisions based on experience, and cloistered them as well (in other words, Division II teams only play other Division II teams). It is likely this will continue if we have a robust enough field.

If, however, we have something on the order of nine or ten teams, that makes little sense. Instead, I will advocate for having one field, but with different prizes and awards won. I think this was the way ACF used to try to do it, and I like it; you'll still have the ability to measure yourself against those at your experience level, but you'll also get a chance to see how you rate against veteran teams and thus give yourself some goals for improvement (assuming any is needed). We'll see how things shake out for that.

Snead State's packet is in the works and we hope to have it to you by the March 22nd deadline, and if not that for sure the April 3rd deadline. Unless some big event happens in the area between now and the 22nd our packet should be in by then, how usable it will be remains to be seen but we are trying our best.

I would like to tentatively express interest in sending a team from UCF to this tournament. We are definitely willing to make the trip but are at the whim of the school bureaucracy and their intricate approval process. I'll initiate the paperwork process and confirm or lament our lack of attendance as soon as possible.

If able to attend, we will be submitting a packet, but it may take a couple of weeks (with our sincerest apologies).

Wanted to bump this, and to remind those who are thinking of coming to this tournament that today (rather, before midnight tonight) is the second packet deadline.

I'm feeling fairly generous, so I'd like to extend an offer: if you have at least half of a packet finished, but need some more time on the other half, you can send what you have already done to me for the April 3rd discount (provided, of course, that I get the rest of it before next Sunday). Send it to:

[email protected]

Thanks, and I hope to hear from some of you today.

A field update, of sorts.

At the moment, the following teams have signalled their definite intention to come by means of submitting questions:

Alabama
Billy Beyer, et al.
Central Florida
Georgetown University
Carol Guthrie et al.
Snead State
Virginia Tech
Georgia Gwinnett College

(three of the above have claimed they would be finished with their packets by Monday night, so I'm looking forward with bated breath either to the finished sets or to whimpers and pleas for extensions)

I have some additional interest, but as yet nothing written, from South Carolina, Western Kentucky, North Georgia, and Louisville.

If you are not on this list but wish to be, send me mail to [email protected]; preferably, with packet attached. Whether with packet or no, please let us know if you are coming by the 16th.

Yeah, I can do that.

Initially my plan was to have all teams play each other in a non-segregated round robin. However, a combination of a larger field plus a few teams who did not write means that I'm going to have to separate the fields into Division II and Division I/Open Division.

At the moment, the teams are these:

Open/Division I
Alabama
Beyer and whomever
Central Florida
Georgetown University
Georgia
Guthrie, et al.
Louisville
Virginia Tech

Division I
Georgia Gwinnett A
Georgia Gwinnett B
Snead State
Western Kentucky
Louisville (?)
UTC (?)

What I envision is running some sort of round robin wherein everyone plays everyone else, followed by three rounds of playoffs if necessary. For Division II, a double round-robin followed by playoffs of necessary.

Actually, I could rather use another team in Division I (assuming everyone who has written or committed actually comes). Anyone in the area feel like coming? The "no-packet" fee can be negotiated (as in, "removed" if you're broke)

If so, e-mail me ([email protected]). I'll take the first team to reply. Also, if anyone on this list has had a change of plans/heart, PLEASE let me know today.

Does that answer your question?

Is this tournament still happening? I heard Chattanooga was hit by the storms last night. Anywho, assuming my final gets rescheduled which seems highly likely, I'll probably be here solo. I'll let you know something when I know something. Snead is supposed to be making a new revised spring schedule as we speak and should be posting it shortly.

EDIT: Snead still doesn't even have power restored. All finals are moved back one week, so assuming this still happens I should be able to make it.

We're leaving for Chattanooga in 2 hours on the assumption that no news is good news.

For what it's worth: hopefully you got an early-morning e-mail from Charlie, but yes Moon Pie is still a go. It will be a weird day - UTC will be still taking finals and we'll be in completely different rooms than usual, but we're all going to smile and fake it the best we can.

There will be smiling faces at Grote Hall to meet you when you arrive; I'm about to hit the road myself. (Sadly, the interstate takes me right past Ringgold, God bless those sweet people.)

No, they just got a really late start. UTC had to move finals to Saturday because of the events of last week. Charlie had to rearrange resources at the last minute. It's amazing that they actually had the tournament.

In Division II, it was:

1. Louisville B
2. Snead State/Shorter Hybrid
3. WKU
4. Georgia Gwinnett A
5. Georgia Gwinnett B

I'm not sure what ended up happening in D-I, but I do know that at the end of the round robin Chicago had cleared the field with Georgia being a game behind, and that there were plans for an advantaged final. I think Billy Beyer's open team also did well, I think that was at least the top open team.

For DI, I know U of L A got 4th. Which is pretty good, considering they had to play with half a team for a few rounds.

In DI, first and second went to Chicago and UGA respectively. I'm not sure what happened for 3rd/4th.

Also, visiting that huge bookstore that was recommended to us got me a copy of Maria Callas's 1955 La Scala recording of Norma for under $5 and many books well under $1, so thanks for that!

Congratulations to the University of Chicago and Louisville B, winners of their respective divisions at the 2011 Moon Pie (TM) Classic at UT-Chattanooga 4/30/2011. Congratulations also to Billy Beyer, who was the top open team playing solo.

Special thanks go to Editor-in-Chief Seth Kendall and to the many volunteers, and also to all players for their cooperation under the most difficult circumstances any UTC tournament has ever faced. As noted in an earlier post, weather-related class cancellations this semester forced UTC for the first time in its history to reschedule finals on that Saturday. Every room we'd reserved months ago was therefore unavailable at the 11th hour. We owe a great debt of gratitude to Cheryl Faulkner of UTC Continuing Education. Working into Friday evening, Cheryl scrambled to find us just enough rooms within walking distance of each other to hold the tournament.

But that challenge pales in comparison to the deadly tornadoes of April 27, which hit the Chattanooga area hard. We were fortunate that UTC was not in one of many parts of Chattanooga that were still without electricity the day of the tournament. The weather also led to two late cancellations and the merger of two short-handed teams, which required a complete revamp of the schedule and added to the facility-related delays.

I especially want to thank moderators Ruth Jackson and Zac Perry and stats keeper Patrick Nelson, all associated with the quizbowl program at Ringgold High in Ringgold, GA, who came to Moon Pie as volunteers just three days after their school and much of their town was destroyed by an EF4 tornado. (And if you wonder why they didn't volunteer in the Ringgold relief efforts instead: At that point civilian volunteers were still not even allowed into Ringgold.)

The UTC Academic Trivia Association is donating $150, roughly the net proceeds from Moon Pie, to tornado relief in memory of Chelsea Black. Chelsea, who joined Ringgold's quizbowl team earlier this year, and her entire family were among the nine fatalities in Ringgold.

Here are the top teams in each division:

Division I:
1st - Chicago
2nd - Georgia
3rd - Georgetown
4th - Louisville A

Division II:
1st - Louisville B
2nd - Shorter/Snead State hybrid*
3rd - Western Kentucky
4th - Georgia Gwinnett A

Full stats will be posted to Scobo this week.

* UTC does not normally consider hybrid teams eligible for trophies at collegiate events, but we made an exception due to the tornadoes' impact on Snead State's participation.
