UTC's NAQT HS NCT Mirror

Post by Your Genial Quizmaster »

Things are finally calming down enough for me to get this long-overdue event scheduled. For family reasons, the proposed July 9 date no longer works for me. We can and will hold the mirror on Saturday, July 23, if there is still sufficient interest at this point. Please let us know at utcquizbowl@gmail,com and we will post a final announcement no later than this Sunday (6/12.) Thanks for your patience.

An e-mail has been sent (so Jake tells me) but myself and new teammate Jake Sundberg are interested. He informs me there is a possibility of 1 more Alabama player coming with us as well as a possibility of a special guest appearance by Chuck Pearson. Stay tuned folks.

I hear my name has been taken in vain.

I will be there, and there are rumors of Shorter participation as well (hooray summer classes). My affiliation is undeclared at this time, however, Who knows, maybe I'll take on Sundberg, Morris et al. solo...;)

The new date doesn't work for the delegation that was thinking about going from WKU, so we'll have to miss. I would declare free agency and try to head down by myself, but I don't have a car. If something changes in the next month, I'll let you know.

ANNOUNCEMENT: UTC's NAQT HS NCT Mirror 7/23/11

Post by Your Genial Quizmaster »

Once again this summer, UT-Chattanooga will host a delayed mirror of the NAQT High School National Championship Tournament. The tournament will be held Sat., July 23, 2011. This event is open to anyone who hasn’t already heard/read the questions. If we can find a trash tournament to mirror, we will also hold Summer Camp on Sun., July 24. Details will be posted in the Trash forum if/when available.

Both tournaments are open to all interested players regardless of school level, academic affiliation, or lack thereof. (Yes, that includes coaches too.) Individual players are eligible to form mixed teams or make themselves available as free agents to sign on with other teams. Teams may be up to four players; yes, you can play solo if you wish (see Fees below.)

PRE-REGISTRATION: You don't have to pay or submit rosters till you get there, but you MUST let us know at [email protected] by Thursday night 7/21 if you're coming. After that, we may not be able to fit you into the schedule.

SCHEDULE: We're returning to the friendly confines of Holt Hall. We’ll meet in Holt 124 (see directions below.) Registration begins Sat. 7/23 at 9:30 (not 9:00) AM EDT. Tournament play will start at 10 AM.

FORMAT & RULES: By popular demand, the NAQT mirror will once again be an *untimed* tournament with 20-tossup rounds. With that one exception, we'll follow standard NAQT rules (see http://www.naqt.com). Also, if the field size is high, we reserve the right to split or seed the field by experience, depending on how many teams register and what level they're on. When you pre-register your team, please give me a general idea of who's playing on your team and how much experience they have.

PRIZES: Since the NAQT mirror is an open tournament, we will offer suitable prizes in lieu of trophies for the top teams and individual scorers (probably books, unless another brilliant idea strikes us between now and then.)

FEES: Base fee is $90 per team.
Buzzer: $5 discount, up to two per team
Full time official for either day $10 discount

If you are looking for lower fees, we will provide discounts for freelance questions (academic or trash) for our future use. Please e-mail any such requests to [email protected].

DIRECTIONS: From Atlanta and points south -- take I-75 to Chattanooga, then I-24 west towards downtown, then follow the freeway splitoff for U.S. 27 North, downtown Chattanooga. From 27 North take the 4th Street exit, within sight of the Tennessee Aquarium. Go right on 4th St. (you have no choice) and follow it for ca. 1 mile. Go past the UTC Arena, after which E. 4th St. becomes part of E. 3rd St. After that, take the second right onto Palmetto St. Go two blocks and turn right onto Vine St. (just past the EMCS Building.) Just before the place where Vine St. is blocked off, the parking lot for Holt is on the right.

* From Knoxville and points north -- take I-75 to Chattanooga, then I- 24 West; directions from there same as above.

* From Nashville and points west/north: Take I-24 east to Chattanooga. As you round Moccasin Bend (freeway goes alongside river) watch for two exit lanes on the right; take the less rightward of the two, which will have signs above it for U.S. 27 N. Rest of directions are the same as above.

* From Birmingham and points southwest: Take I-59 to the outskirts of Chattanooga, where it dead-ends into I-24. Get on I-24 East and follow the Nashville directions from there.

TOURNAMENT DIRECTOR: Yeah, it’s still Charlie Steinhice. But please send registration e-mail to the team account at [email protected].

^What he said, I took the whole weekend off. So count me in as some sort of free agent I guess for trash, unless Sundberg plays trash or I find another team to join

FYI, we can now confirm that there will also be a Summer Camp trash tournament on Sun. 7/24/11, mirroring the VCU Trash tournament. Details are available in the Trash forum.

Right now we only have three confirmed teams (plus one probable) for the HS NCT mirror, but we haven't heard from many of the usual suspects. Please e-mail us at [email protected] if you're interested in bringing a team or attending as a free agent. Thanks.

We now know of the following teams:

UT alums
Ringgold HS / alums
Shorter / alums
Glenn Allen Bobo et al.
Matt... [damn!] er, Mark Morris et al.

We also have numerous ronin and a possible UTC house team. In any event, whoever shows up, there will be a tournament Saturday.

If anyone is going to be in Chattanooga tonight (Friday July 22) and feel like maybe scrimmaging a little, at, say, 8 PM or so, I'd certainly not turn a little practice time down; I also wouldn't mind washing practice down with some Newcastle or something, either. Send me an e-mail at camillus AT gmail dot com if interested.

From what Jake told me, his team cleared the field at 10-0, winning a one game final over Seth Kendall 400-205.

1. Jake Sundberg et al.
2. Seth Kendall

I'm not sure how the rest of the teams fared.

Charlie will correct me if I'm wrong, but if I remember correctly it was

1st - Jake, Dargan, Myself (Churchy La Femme Nikita Khrushchev)
2nd - Kendall
3rd - UT Alums
4th - Pearson (Chuck Pearson Farewell Tour)

I can't remember Kendall's team name or the one for UT Alums.

This is the correct final placement. There was a tie for 3rd which was broken by PPG.

We did an eight team round-robin, after which we broke into two brackets and did swiss pairings.
