ANNOUNCEMENT: Moon Pie Mirror @McMaster August 6th 2011

by MacSR
McMaster will be hosting a mirror of the Moon Pie tournament on Saturday August 6th 2011, followed by a mirror of COLT on Sunday

Details
The tournament will likely be located in the Michael G. DeGroote Center for Learning and Discovery (MDCL), pending the results of our room bookings. This is the same building where we've hosted most of our tournaments in the past year.

MDCL is south of the student center, and is the modern building attached to the hospital by 2 bridges.

http://www.mcmaster.ca/welcome/campusmap.cfm

The Student Center is #51 on this map, and MDCL is #52.

As per usual, arrive at around 9:00 am so we can get play started by 9:30 am.

Fees

The base fee will be $100 dollars a team.

Discounts
-$5 per working buzzer set
-$5 per moderator/staffer
-$10 if team has traveled over 200 miles on Google Maps.

If your team is planning to play both Moon Pie and COLT, we can work out a good discount for each tournament's fees so that it is financially feasible to play both.

I plan on playing this with Sinan. Any non-science players interested in joining us?

Will, Sinan, and Jordan will now be playing Moon Pie on a team with Mario Chalmers.

Ottawa will bring you one or two teams.

I'd very much like to attend this. Going to see if I can round up some others from CCVI, but they may be put off by this being a collegiate tournament. I'll post again with an update later. I'd participate as a free agent if I can't find anyone?

There will almost certainly be a team from CCVI attending the COLT mirror as well.

Lisgar (or at least myself) will probably be down for this, unless something comes up. We might also go to COLT.

I am looking to play this and COLT and am in search of teammates for both.

I won't know until very late if I'm available (I will attend if I can, even if only as staff). If I do come, it would be part of a longer vacation in the area, so Ottawa-area people should not depend on me for transportation or lodging.

This team will probably win, because most American teams will go to VCU at DCC. Too OP.

I've e-mailed some Canadians about it, but would there be any interest in a Canadian mirror of VCUO? Or would this feature an already too cluttered Canadian calendar?

23 July is VETO @ U of T. 6-7 Aug. is McMaster's Moon Pie and COLT mirrors. Maybe a delayed Canadian mirror in mid-late August could work.

EDIT: If it's on a good day for me, I would be interested in going.

This also means the top scorer prize is pretty much wide open.

I would totally be down for this if it isn't teh last weekend of August (as I'm no longer in Toronto by then)

Don't know who would host though.

I also would be tentatively interested, if this was the 20th/21st. (A VCU Open Mirror, that is to say; unfortunately I'll be out of town for Moon Pie/COLT)

I am pretty late on this, but I would like to come if I'm not working--unfortunately I won't know until last minute. If I can come, I am down to play with pretty much whoever needs a teammate, preferably a team with at least one science player.

Have mentioned this to some other people, but Ottawa teams are pretty amorphous. If anyone shows up to this thing without a team, we can probably set something up.

Woburn will most likely sending only one team, if at all. We are also interested in decreasing the costs for entering both tournaments, as some members are taking the GO train to get there.

I am a "science" player who is in need of teammates. I have already talked to Brendan about joining with Ottawa people.

Just a heads up, we are happy to provide a 150 combined base fee for any teams/schools who are planning to play both COLT and Moon Pie on the 6th and 7th, and you are free to shuffle your rosters around and still qualify for the discount.

Here is a Facebook event for the two tournaments: http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=208526649198926. If any teams that are on the fence about attending could let us know either way in the coming week we would definitely appreciate it.

So far for our field I have:

Nediger et al.

Ottawal x 1-2

Huma et al.

Woburn?

Aaron dos Remedios et al.?

Lisgar?

CCVI?

John F. Ross HS?

Teams with question marks, please know either by this thread, facebook, or by email to quizbowl-at-mcmaster-dot-ca if you will be attending or not, and how many moderators/buzzers you will be bringing.

Thanks.

At least two people will be coming, maybe three to Moon PIe. We need a science player. We might have several sets of buzzers. I'll get to you soon about COLT.

Should this high school team be playing a near-Regular difficulty collegiate tournament? I don't think they've ever played quizbowl nor made Reach for the Top provincials in the last couple of years, but I'm not familiar with them.

CCVI will be in attendance at this in some way shape or form, we may also be bringing some Ross people to add on to us...they won't have a team of their own, I think.

They only haven't made Reach provincials because they've consistently been up against Centennial every single year...

Additionally, forgot to say it in the last post, but CCVI cannot bring buzzers, but we will have one tentative moderator for Moon Pie, and I will definitely moderate for COLT.

Field Update for Moon Pie, please let me know if these numbers are accurate.

Also, let us know if you can bring a buzzer set or not. Thanks.

Lisgar can bring two buzzbox buzzers + laptops.

I could also bring a laptop, if needed. Woburn can't bring any buzzers, since they are locked up (I don't know why) in a room in the school.

The set was good, but not perfect, as evidenced by the frequently painful phrasing/sentence structure, especially in the 2nd to last pack. The difficulty of the bonuses also seemed to vary considerably. One answer came up in both a tossup and a bonus today. Some answer underlining was sub-optimal, requiring the first and last names of figures with pretty much unique names in their fields.

There was also a fair bit of useless biography bowl and other non-clues.

I also contend that the winning team was overpowered and needs to be nerfed.

Thanks to Sameer and McMaster for hosting an enjoyable tournament, and I look forward to COLT.

EDIT: Is this set cleared for discussion?

I'll let you start the discussion thread, but I do have a few points (some good things, some bad things) to make about the set once discussion gets rolling, and I presume others do as well.
