The Quizbowl Resource Center

The Ohio State University Academic Team is pleased to be hosting a mirror of MAGNI at our Columbus campus on Saturday, October 22. It is a regular difficulty tournament written by Chris Chiego and Auroni Gupta from UCSD, Matt Jackson, John Lawrence, and Kevin Koai from Yale, and Jerry Vinokurov.

Logistics:

The tournament will be held in the Central Classrooms Building. We are aiming to begin play promptly at 9 AM, with registration taking place between 8:15 and 8:45 at Hitchcock Hall Room 131, followed by a short meeting. There will be about an hour for lunch. Further details regarding the tournament’s logistics will be provided as they become available.

Registration:

To register, please send an email to me at [redacted] and indicate the number of teams, buzzers, and moderators that you are planning to bring. Also, let me know if you would like an invoice.

Fees:

Base fee: $100 per team, -$10 per subsequent team (3 teams thus being 100 + 90 + 80 = $270)
Buzzer discount: -$10 per working buzzer
Moderator discount: -$10 per moderator
Travel discount: -$10 per 200 miles traveled

Case will almost certainly be there with a team and 3 buzzers. I'll be able to nail down specifics once the semester starts.

I'm trying to see if UIC can bring a team to this. I have to nail down specifics but if we do we should have 1 team, 1 buzzer and 1 travel discount.

It is quite possible that Penn State will be attending; I can confirm or deny this rumor within a week, depending on how or first meeting and finances go. We would have 2-3 teams, hopefully.

We'd like to bring 1-3 teams to this.

Buffalo will probably be bringing 2 teams and at least one buzzer.

We're still looking for hotel rooms, but we have two drivers lined up so we'll be able to bring 3 teams, 2 buzzers, and one moderator. And 100% awesome. Oh, and we're like 330 miles away or so.

We aren't entirely sure whether this is happening or not yet. We hope to have an official Canada mirror announced soon.

EDIT: To clarify, all Canadian schools interested in hosting MAGNI between October 15th and October 29th should still email Auroni and I as soon as possible.

EDIT2: We can now confirm that that a McMaster mirror is indeed happening on October 29th. Make your travel decisions however you wish.

Kenyon College intends to bring 2 teams.
We have one working buzzer system.
We also will bring one moderator (contingent on student moderators being allowed).

We intend on formally registering once funding is secured.

That being said, when is the registration deadline?

I will most likely close registration the Thursday before the tournament, October 20. Registration will close prior to this if the tournament field reaches 28 teams, as any more would exceed the amount of rooms that have been reserved for the tournament.

We unfortunately won't be able to attend due to conflicts with this occuring over our fall break.

Wooster will probably bring a team and a buzzer system.

There's a very good chance that I'll come to play solo since the rest of my team is off for fall break.

I could also team up with someone if you guys (or the editors) are allowing open teams.

Auroni, are there any guidelines for discounts for people playing solo, or is that left to our own discretion?

Yeah, you can set the fee schedule and discounts as you'd like.

I'll send an email to confirm tomorrow afternoon, but Penn state will be there with two teams. Hooray!

We'll be there with 3 teams, 3 buzzers, 0 moderators. I also sent an email with the same info.

Just a reminder that to be registered for this tournament, I will need to have received an email by the time I check tomorrow morning. Tomorrow I will also send out an email outlining the final details for the tournament and will post all of the same information here, as well.

I have had a few schools ask me about this, so I figured I'd address it here. The travel discount will be given once for a school, not each individual team that a school might be bringing. Hope that clarifies any confusion.

I would first like to thank all of you for planning to attend tomorrow's mirror of MAGNI at Ohio State. Registration for the tournament will begin tomorrow at 8:15 in Hitchcock Hall Room 131 and will run until 8:45. Hitchcock can be found on this map: http://www.osu.edu/map/building.php?building=274. There has been construction on Woodruff Ave. on non-football Saturdays, and there is a chance that this road might be closed, so take this into consideration.

The best option for parking will be the Tuttle Park Place Parking Garage, which can be found here: http://www.osu.edu/map/building.php?building=088. Parking is also available slightly further away on Lane Ave. or near the Ohio Union.

As for the tournament itself, once the registration has been completed, there will be a very brief meeting to discuss rules and format. From there, teams will go to the Central Classrooms building, which is a short walk from Hitchcock, where we hope to begin play by 9. The field is at 18 teams, and we will be doing 3 brackets of 6 teams,then a rebracket into 3 brackets of 6 teams, for a total of 10 matches before finals, if necessary.

We plan to have about an hour break for lunch after Round 5. There are plenty of tasty options on High St., which is about a ten minute walk due east of Central Classrooms.

After losing the first game of an advantaged final, Michigan A came back to defeat Chicago A and win the OSU MAGNI mirror. Michigan B, Chicago B, Carnegie Mellon/Trevor and Northwestern A were also in the top bracket.

Congratulations to Michigan A on winning the tournament with a very impressive performance! I would also like to congratulate Olmsted Falls High School on a very fine showing, finishing in tenth place. I would like to thank all teams for coming out and hope that they had a great time!
