[DATE CHANGE] 10/8/2011 - Collegiate Novice 2 Mirror in KY

Post by ikjadoon » Tue Aug 23, 2011 10:59 pm

Well, we're a little late here, but we're here. :D

Centre College is excited to be a host for the Early Autumn Collegiate Novice Tournament this coming September 17th October 8th.

=============================================================================
When?
Date: October 8th, 2011
Time: 10AM - 5PM (at the latest; includes lunch)

Where?
Centre College (click for general directions from + approximate travel time)
Located in Danville, KY (smack dab in the centre of Kentucky)
Building: Crounse Hall

What and why?
theMoMA wrote:This tournament is intended as an early introduction for collegiate novices to college quizbowl. It aims to be extremely accessible while remaining within a normal academic distribution. The target audience is college players who are very new to quizbowl. Every year, many of these new players come to first practices all around the country, but few stick with the game. This tournament is an early-season introduction to competitive quizbowl in which novices can play against teams of their own strength on questions that reward the level of knowledge that they have. Our hope is that this will be the immediate positive competitive experience that new players need to get hooked on the game.
Who can play?
1. All ACF eligibility rules apply, except when they contradict the rules below.

2. This is a tournament for introducing collegiate novices to quizbowl. Consequently, no high school teams or players are eligible.

3. Anyone (who does not break Rules 1 or 2) who has never played quizbowl before is automatically eligible. Other academic competition does not count as quizbowl for this rule.

4. Players meeting one or more of the following criteria must apply to the head editor for special permission to play:

i. If you have already completed your second year of college (calculated from time in college, not credits). Time in a post-secondary high school program does not count.

ii. If you were ever on a playoff or top-bracket team at NAQT HSNCT or PACE NSC.

iii. If you have ever scored at least 30 points per game at any college tournament.

iv. If you have ever won any college tournament.

5. Anyone who does not fall into any of the four categories listed in Rule 4 is automatically eligible to play.
Full details about the style and details of how this tournament will be run are listed in the first post here.

Pricing / Registration

$15/player base price

[$5 discount for a buzzer set]

Contact ibrahim.jadoon@centre.edu or ryan.essinger@centre.edu or reply to this thread to register.

Excited for teams in the area to pop in for a fun weekend. :D

We'll just express interest for now. We're not back in school yet so we'll have to see how many freshmen and sophomores we can scrape together in the next three and a half weeks, and I think that one or two of our juniors might apply for an exemption to play since they meet all of the other eligibility requirements. After all that, I can tell you if we'll have 0, 1, or maybe even 2 teams there.

Regretfully, we cannot send any squads to the tournament as of now, but I am going to double check at practice tonight to see if we have anyone eligible. Are you all planning on hosting other tournies this year, if so, please let us know, we would love to send some teams to Centre.

Unfortunately, I don't think WKU is going to be able to field a team. We just had our first meeting of the year and we haven't really kicked our recruiting drive for the semester into full drive yet.

It is very nice to see UK with a team again!
Is Centre considering hosting any more tournaments later in the year (winter/spring)?

(Edit: Sorry for not reading more carefully!)

It's an option, but not one we've looked too much into mainly because of our single-mindedness and limited time, haha. But, it's certainly viable, particularly if this tournament turns out well.

No problem. :)

@all

Does October 8th work for anyone here, possibly better than 9/17 did?

Stats are up:

Thanks to UTC for coming (and staying), even though a last-minute cancellation put them the only school in the field. :D
