BARGE @ UIUC on 1/21/12

Post by Papa's in the House » Sat Oct 22, 2011 2:56 pm

This is an announcement for the BARGE mirror held at UIUC on January 21, 2012. Please see here for a general description of the tournament.

Location
This tournament will be held in David Kinley Hall (DKH). The full address is:
1407 W Gregory Dr
Urbana, IL 61801

Campus map available here

When will this tournament start?
I plan to have the first round start at 9:15 am sharp (yes, I will start reading without you if you haven't contacted me letting me know you'll be late). You will lose the arriving on time discount if you do not check in with me by 9:00 am. Check-in will be in 114 DKH (the main lecture room).

Who can play this tournament?
"Anyone. This is an open tournament, and specifically one which I hope will be a draw for more casual non-students as well; whereas a four-year collegiate playing career and a decent knowledge of your field wouldn't even guarantee survival at something like IO last year, it certainly will here."

"-This tournament is meant as a regular season event, not a summer open; I'd like to see actual teams attend. Obviously if your team just isn't going to be in the same city or you want to play with a buddy, that's probably fine, assuming you don't violate. . .
-Please, no superteams. Look, you shouldn't want or need to play this tournament with a superteam; it's not going to be hard enough to warrant it, there aren't going to be other superteams there. . . just don't do it. I know this is kind of a subjective thing and to some degree relative to the competition at a given site, and that's fine – we'll handle things on a case by case basis. To try to illustrate what I mean here, I really hope to see guys like Matt Weiner and Jonathan Magin playing this tournament at the Maryland site. Just not on the same team. That doesn't mean they have to play solo or anything like that, but there's an awful lot of distance between an empty chair and Jonathan Magin and I trust people to grasp this concept.
-I'm entirely cool with open players latching on to existing collegiate teams, assuming we're not talking about students being pushed out (why would you run your team this way???) or if it would violate the superteams rule."

What kind of difficulty can I expect?
Please see the original post by Chris Ray

Buzzer discount: -$5 each
Moderator: -$10 each

Contact Information
If you wish to attend this tournament, or if you have any questions about it, you can e-mail the Tournament Director, me, at martinc0711@gmail.com. Please inform me as to the number of teams, buzzers, and moderators you intend to bring, as well as whether or not you believe you qualify for the travel discount.

Periodic updates will be made (as necessary). For a list of teams intending on attending, see the post below this one.

*You can still obtain this discount if you call me before the start of the tournament with a good reason (i.e., your car broke down) for why you're late.
**If you are sending multiple teams from one school, you won't be eligible for this discount.
***If finances are an issue, contact me and we'll work something out.

If there is enough interest from players, I will look into finding the staff to run TERP.

How are you planning on defining "superteams" for this tournament?

I remain Grand Superteam Inquisitor, and will define them as outlined in the original BARGE announcement - that is, on a case-by-case basis, and with an eye to preserving the general competitiveness of the field. People should feel very encouraged to email me with questions about any intended lineups.

I won't allow a superteam unless they've already contacted Chris and can send me some sort of documentation saying that he's OK'ed the team composition.

Verily you are thwarted, stealth Yaphe-Subash team. . . "Chicago D" indeed!

Seriously though just clear it with me and do not lie to Charles about it, I don't think we need to be demanding anyone's papers here.

Minnesota will be sending some number of teams to this (probably 2). I'll confirm once we get things sorted out to avoid a superteam.

Myself and Ryan Westbrook are looking for teammates that can write questions.

Is this mirror requiring packet submission, by the way?

In case you're wondering, I've contacted Logan about mirroring TERP 2. When I hear back, I'll let you know more details.

EDIT: After hearing back from Logan, we are clear to run a TERP 2 mirror. I'll post an announcement sometime soon with more specific details.

I've added Michigan to the field since they've submitted (or are going to submit) packets. I hope to see several more teams join up in the next couple of weeks.

Provided no last minute changes need to be made, the schedule will be 2 brackets of 5 rebracketed into 2 brackets of 5 (the 5th team will be chosen by PPB of 3rd teams in the prelim brackets). The 2 teams on bye will be able to play as much of a crossover game as the statskeeper can finish before the next round starts.

EDIT: It's been awhile since I've TD'ed a packet sub tournament...

Hey, uh, who won and stuff? I know we placed fourth and Michigan B placed fifth, but since we were one of the first teams to leavee after the tournament was over, I have no idea what the results were.

Michigan A (Kurtis Droge, Will Nediger, Libo Zeng) defeated Illinois (Ike Jose, Mike Sorice, Austin Listerud, Steven Canning) in the second game of an advantaged final to win the UIUC mirror of BARGE. Minnesota A (Rob Carson, Andrew Hart, Bernadette Spencer) took third after losing the last round of playoffs that essentially served as a play-in game to the finals since both Illinois and Minnesota A were 2-1 going into Round 10.

I want to thank all of the staff (Greg Baboukis, Tom Brown, Billy Busse, Chinmay Kansara, and Zack Moser) and the members of bye teams that volunteered to read for helping make this tournament happen. There were a few issues that popped up during the day and I want to apologize to everyone for any trouble these problems may have caused. They are entirely my fault and I will work more diligently to make sure similar issues do not pop up at future UIUC tournaments.

Stats can be found here.
