Following the conclusion of Loyola's Ultima tournament, I will be running an open pop culture tournament. Anyone can play, and the money generated will be donated to Matt's Buzzers.

Details

When: after Ultima finishes
Cost: $10 per person
Who: anyone can play. Players, coaches, parents, siblings, anyone who is willing to pay $10 can grab a buzzer. Right now, it will be doubles. If there is sufficient interest, I will allow teams of 3.
Why: all profits will be going towards Matt's Buzzers. In the past, this has meant second-chance drawings for teams who missed out in December.

To sign up, post here or email me at dtaylor1987 at gmail dot com. You can sign up a team, or sign up as a free agent.

I will allow teams to come up with their own creative names, but reserve the right to reject them.

I know there will be several Loyola teams present; I will do my best to get an exact count soonish. Donald, let's work together to send out an email announcement about this tournament in the next week or so? Also, it occurs to me now, you are coming out to run this, right? So you'll be staffing for Ultima proper as well?

The tournament format will be something involving a full RR or brackets, depending on size.

Game format is 20 TUs, no bonuses. 20pt powers, no negs. If the tie cannot be broken with the questions in the packet, the tie will stand.

I'm in - maybe with Tom Egan?

Either way, sign me up.

You can include "There may be no i in team but there is a y in Dylan"
Basque & Minarik.

As I brought Fenwick out to this, I'm playing. I'll find out a partner later.

Would the teams registered be opposed to spinning off the high schoolers into their own tournament, and another tournament for the college/adult teams?

I mean I have no issues considering Colby will pretty much clear the field solo. What would happen with the teams of HS/ Coaches (i.e. Dylan and Basque)?

I'd probably put them in the upper group, as penance for Wake-Up Call.

True. He doesn't need a partner. In fact, he should be forced to play left-handed.

Also, while I won't throw a fit either way, I would prefer one big field. This might be the only chance I get to wipe the smug look off of those high schoolers' faces, undoubtedly via my knowledge of theme songs to 80s sitcoms.

What's the latest to enter a team?
Greg and I may enter as a team, but we'll have to figure out transportation/interest first.
EDIT: Sorry, this also depends on Greg's level of apathy. But I guess we're entered.

This will depend on the size of the field, and the number of readers. I'll tentatively enter you.

Also, this tournament is in dire need of readers. I will offer to pick up the dinner tab for staffers, if that helps.

I forget whether I already mentioned this, but I'm happy to staff or play, whatever makes things easier. It sounds like it'll be the former.

Due to packet limitations, I'm capping the field at 12. If there is sufficient interest, I will consider growing the field or allowing bigger teams.

Mike,

I would be the guy to talk to about that one -- email me at theamazingbobboREMOVESPAM at aol dot com.

Also, a big thanks to Donald for all the help he gave during the writing/editing process on the set... I hope you guys have fun with it, and I hope it makes Matt's Buzzers some good money.

Sorry to hear it.

The field has been updated. At this point, I have to cap it at 12 due to staffing constraints.

If you're already going to Ultima, and want to stick around for a good time, let me know.

As it stands, the field is closed. If I can secure enough staff, I'll raise the cap.

At this point, the likely format is two pools of six, then 3/3 crossovers and all record ties broken by ppg, and ACF style finals.

If you have any questions, email me.

Loyola has 9 or 10 people potentially interested in this if we can fit into 3 teams. I'm assuming that we will, since some of the teams already entered will likely combine.

Meaning that on average, a team from Fenwick has a 1/3 chance of winning the tourney.

also, I'd like to hazard either "Oswald Cobblepot" or "Go On, Ask Him About Jeri Ryan" as a team name for me/Egan.

At this point, unless more staffers materialize or teams contract, I can't guarantee room.

Due to the inclement weather, and assuming the event isn't cancelled, Matt Laird has agreed to run the event in my stead. I have sent him almost everything, and tonight I will be sending him further information.

I apologize for not personally being there, but hope the participants have fun regardless.

Cool. Get ready for the Thomas Egan "wait in total silence without conferring for four seconds and then give the correct answer to the bonus part" move. It'll freak you out but he's always right when he does it.

by Boeing X-20, Please!
1. Illinois Maine South Academy (7-1)
2. Romnation (6-2)
3. Colby (6-2)
4. Cahlfsifornication (4-4)
5. RIJ Against the Mach-Ian/The Wastelanders (4-4)
6. BAMFs (3-5)
7. Bear Jaw LaRoue (2-6)
8. B.A. (0-8)

In a surprising turn of events, Colby did not win this tournament despite putting up a tournament-high 7 powers per game. The I.M.S.A team consisting of Brad Fischer, Noah Prince, Danielle Long, Greg Peterson, and Tom Egan beat the team of Mike Perovanovic, Mat Laird, Nick Bergeon, and Eric Ordonez.

No problem, glad people had a good time and glad the proceeds were able to go to a good cause.
