CO History Doubles: 7/22/2012

by Cheynem
Hello. Due to popular demand, CO History Doubles will be back in all of its glory, hopefully with less police interference. It will be run on Sunday, July 22nd, the day after Chicago Open proper.

FORMAT/PRICE:

This will be an mACF, packet-submission doubles tournament, with teams of two. The tournament is considered “guerilla” because it does not have a formal editor like previous history doubles. But see the section about redactors below.

If your team submits a packet on time (see below), the cost to play is FREE. Your team MUST submit a packet to play--we are being very strict about this decision this year. If you did not write a packet, you are not playing unless your teammate completely wrote a packet by his or herself, OR due to teams dropping out or whatever we need a team to round out the schedule. We WILL NOT allow three person teams.

PACKETS:

Packets are due by July 8 (two weeks before).

Turn in packet by or on July 8: free
Turn in packet by or on July 15: +$5 (money goes to feed staff)
Turn in packet after July 15: +$10 (drop dead date: July 19)

Please submit a packet of 24 tossups with the following distribution

6/0 American History (please vary by topic and date)

10/0 European History (please include at least 1 British History and 1 Classical History and the vary the rest by time period and location--i.e. don't write 8 Russian history questions--try and hit the major reasons, like France, Germany, Russia, Scandinavia, etc.--I don't care if you count Canadian or Australian history here or in world)

6/0 World History (please include at least 1 Asian History, 1 Latin American History, and 1 African History question, vary the rest by time period and location)

2/0 Your Choice (can be any of the above)

Usual, common-sense rules about distribution apply. Do not make all of your questions social history, nor all of your questions about treaties, nor anything else annoying like that. Be creative with question ideas and generous with answer lines/prompts. Try to keep difficulty down so that as many people as possible can enjoy the event, but don’t sacrifice the question’s ability to reward people who have more knowledge than others.

PLEASE DO NOT INCLUDE POWERMARKS. We may have powers, but if we do, they will be added by a redactor after all the packets are submitted, to ensure uniformity.

TEAM REGISTRATION and NAMES:

I will give you a mocking team name when you sign up. Sign up is official when you have formed a partnership and expressly say so.

READERS:

We need staffers. You may get fed with free food if there are enough late fees or if we take up a collection.

REDACTORS:

The Right Honorable Kyle Haddad-Fonda is serving as a redactor. We are trying to find someone else The co-redactors will also write a finals packet, which we will hopefully read this year.

WHAT TO DO WITH YOUR PACKETS:

Email your completed packets to Kyle at [email protected].

THEME PACKETS:

This is NOT a theme packet event; packets must follow the regular distribution described above. However, if you wish to write one or more history theme packets, we will play them in a shootout-style event at the conclusion of this tournament.

FINAL FIELD:

(by July 8 deadline)
1. Mike Bentley and Ike Jose (Mike and Ike, They Don't Look Alike)
2. Kurtis Droge and Libo Zeng (Teach Me How to Droge-y)
3. Mik Larsen and Joe Nutter (My Kraut Mik Friends)
4. Marshall Steinbaum and Sam Bailey (Order of the Oblique Tossups)
5. Max Schindler and Doug Graebner (The Prime Time Playas)

(by July 15 deadline)
6. Matt Jackson and Matt Bollinger (Lay-Cool)
7. Rob Carson and David Seal (the Sidney Hillman Appreciation Society)
8. Matt Hayes and Brendan Byrne (How Did it Get Byrned?! How Did it Get Byrned?!)

(by July 19 deadline)
9. Mike Cheyne and Eric Mukherjee (the Joseph Paxton Boys)
10. Stephen Liu and Dallas Simons (Liu-sing My Religion)
11. Evan Adams and Will Butler (Turner and Gooch)
12. Matt Weiner and ??? (Crisis on Infinite Matts)
13. Bruce Arthur and Jeff Hoppes (the Vulgarian Horrors)
14. Ryan Westbrook and Matt Lafer (Delmon Young's Defense Team)
15. Trevor Davis and Chris Ray (That's So Ranavalona)
16. Patrick Liao and Jay Misuk (Canucky Shucky Quack Quack)
17. Alex Gerten and Spencer Weinreich (Rise and Fall of the Third Weinreich)
18. Charles Hang (Who doesn't have a nickname because he didn't bother to sign up for this tournament prior to submitting a packet)

STAFF:

(obv. the two people who wrote the packet can work as staffers on a round by round basis)
Auroni Gupta
Nolan Winkler
Will Nediger
Austin Listerud
John Lawrence
Greg Peterson
Eliza Grames

Well, this ought to be a good old-fashioned Stockholm Bloodbath.

Count me in.

Assuming I can make CO weekend I'll play this. I'm decent at US history, know a smattering of Euro, and pretty much nothing about almost everything else. However I also have no particular interest in winning, and really just want to play with someone amiable.

I will play this, and am looking for a teammate who will promptly write moderately wacky history tossups and is willing to meander through this tournament in my presence. Desire for victory fine, but not required.

I know ancient history and bits and pieces of Euro, American, and World.

No interest in winning, you say? Let's do this.

Does that mean that Chris Chiego and I are not joining forces?

EDIT -- I have talked to Chris and confirmed that he is going to be in attendance, so he'll be playing rather than redacting. Consequently, I think I'm going to do this by myself (because I love the quizbowl community so much).

We already have eight teams and there are assuredly more teams coming down the pike. It was theorized that due to the potential very large size of the field, that teams of 3-4 be allowed immediately for logistic/time purposes. What do the masses think?

Note: Keep forming doubles for now, but this is just a FYI, that if we get more than like 14 or 15, we'll probably need to start combining teams.

Unless there are other events scheduled for Sunday, I think we should keep the doubles format.

There's always brackets, though there are obvious issues with that and packet submission.

But keep in mind that quizbowl without bonuses goes very quick.

In that case, I'll put myself down as seeking teammates, though in principle I don't really care whether this is played as doubles or not. It seems to me like if we're going to keep it as doubles, it shouldn't be tossups only, but whatever.

UPDATE: Sam Bailey and I will play as a team.

We probably should realistically only have a few more teams sign up for this, although the inevitable team just not writing a packet will probably commence as well. If you're still interested, sign up, but try to do it pretty quickly. I'm sure we can probably grab some staff if needed.

Due to Chris' realization that he is overcommitted to various things, I am looking for a partner. Chris will, however, write his half of the packet, so whoever comes along will not have to write.
