ANFORTAS - Myth Tournament

Post by Ike »

This is the announcement for ANFORTAS, an eight round, all tossup mythology tournament produced by me. It will be played after KABO, probably Saturday.

Difficulty: Most of the answer lines are gettable at the end by someone with a middling knowledge of all mythologies. Almost every tossup can be answered by those who are more knowledgeable. Each tossup will be approximately 6 lines TNR 10 long, although the font may be different.

Cost to play: Free. If you want to mirror it, that would be great.

Distribution:
10 Greco-Roman
2 Norse
2 Hindu + Vedic
3 Arthurian / Welsh / Celtic blah
1 Mesoamerican
1 Egyptian
1 African / Japanese / Chinese / Polynesian / Native American / Basque / Ainu / Korean / Zulu / pick your favorite mythology that only has a few anthropological inscriptions to go on.
.5 Sumerian, Babylonian, etc.
.5 Finnish + Russian + marginalized European traditions
1 popular legends, folklore, cryptids or literature / art inspired by mythology, or perhaps mythography in general.
That adds up to 22 questions per a packet.

A note on philosophy: This tournament is not about getting points because you happened to have looked up something from http://www.theoi.com/ , read the Wikipedia article, or have seen it come up on old packets before. I’m not saying that doing any of the above will not help you get early buzzes, but its more about getting points from having read primary texts. This tournament thus uses early clues drawn from sources like The Iliad, as opposed to alternate stories about deities recorded in fragments of poetry by obscure poets.

Other notes: I don't worry about such things, we'll wing it as we go along at KABO. If there is demand for this to be held elsewhere as well - post here and I'll accommodate.

One more thing: There are probably some well-intentioned people who are about to ask can I handle writing this tournament and Illinois's Fall Tournament. I would answer "Yes." because this tournament's 176 questions have already been written and put into packets: if I wanted to, I could mirror this tournament tomorrow.

Thanks,
Ike

While I am delighted to play this tournament, you are aware that theoi is almost entirely sourced from primary texts, and that a source like Pseudo-Apollodorus or even Hyginus is no less "primary" than the Iliad, right?

Pfft, "the Iliad". Ike will only be using PRIMARY texts. You know, texts written by gods.

I'm in. What will the tournament format be like? Will it depend on the number of people who sign up, or has it been decided to be singles/doubles/quads/something else?

Fun Mike Cheyne packets on this particular topic would be a great thrill. I hope you do write one sometime.

Yes I am. My main point is to not primarily reward "truly trivial details" from what I considered to be second-tier primary sources. Sources that I considered tier-one I don't mind testing as if people can know more details about. Obviously Homer and Snorri belong in this tier. I also consider the two authors you mentioned as tier one as well for a variety of reasons, one of which is that they exist in a nice volume which are used by a lot of undergraduates. But going out and reading Ptolemy Hephaistion isn't a good idea if you want points, (at least at this tournament...) However, key events from those tier-2 works are fair game.

I'm leaning towards doubles, but I personally don't care. The only thing though is that there will be no draft, as playing poodle dee poodle doo is a colossal waste of time. If you're the type of person who needs to know what teammate they'll be playing with, I'll say doubles for now. Obviously this is only at the Michigan site. Chris, or whoever is running the show over at UMD can do whatever tournament format they find appropriate. All 22 tossups will be read per round, and I'll throw in some of the leftovers I have lying around as tiebreakers.

YESSSS, THE RETURN OF POODLE DEE POODLE DOO

On a more important note, if I have time I will write some monster packets, although my problem is that when I research this topic I get scared and have trouble sleeping.

If we're running it as doubles, you should team up with me if you want a teammate who can occasionally answer questions about Hinduism, Japan, and cryptids.

I've emailed this to Mike Bentley for the UMD site and the address provided by the Canadian site. If someone else needs the set to run the tournaments, email me now, or post here.

FWIW, each round now contains 25 questions and a tiebreaker.

Happy buzzing everyone.

Also, stats for ANFORTAS held at UMich: http://www.hsquizbowl.org/db/tournament ... stats/all/

If there's any errors (which there might be a lot of as a lot of the scoresheets were quite disorganized), feel free to post here or message me or contact me however and I'll fix it.

I was wondering if it would be okay to have an informal mirror of your myth tournament this weekend at the Valencia mirror of KABO. If so, could you please send me the packets? Thanks!
