Collegiate Novice @ Virginia Tech, 9/29/2012

Post by The Goffman Prophecies »

Virginia Tech will be hosting a mirror of the Collegiate Novice tournament at our campus in Blacksburg, VA on Saturday, September 29.

This tournament is an early-season introduction to competitive quizbowl in which novices can play against teams of their own strength on questions that reward the level of knowledge that they have. Our hope is that this will be the immediate positive competitive experience that new players need to get hooked on the game.

Eligibility
Players who meet the following requirements are eligible to play.
  1. All ACF eligibility rules apply, except when they contradict the rules below.
  2. This is a tournament for introducing collegiate novices to quizbowl. Consequently, no high school teams or players are eligible.
  3. Anyone (who does not break Rules 1 or 2) who has never played quizbowl before is automatically eligible. Other academic competition does not count as quizbowl for this rule.
  4. Players meeting one or more of the following criteria must apply to the head editor for special permission to play:
    1. If you have already completed your second year of college (calculated from time in college, not credits). Time in a post-secondary high school program does not count.
    2. If you were ever on a playoff or top-bracket team at NAQT HSNCT or PACE NSC.
    3. If you have ever scored at least 30 points per game at any college tournament.
    4. If you have ever won any college tournament.
  5. Anyone who does not fall into any of the four categories listed in Rule 4 is automatically eligible to play.
Any eligibility appeals should be directed to Andrew Hart at [email protected]

Fees
Base fee: $15 per player. It is encouraged for teams to be composed of no more than 4 to maximize playing opportunities.
Buzzers: -$5 per functioning system with no less than eight working indicators
Staff: -$5 per staff member (lunch will also be provided)
Travel Discount: -$10 for one-way travel in excess of 200 miles (verified via Google Maps)
Minimum fee: $5 per player

Checks or cash are accepted forms of payment. We cannot accept credit cards. Please make checks payable to "Academic Competition Organization at Virginia Tech."

Location
Due to a conflict, we've been forced to move this tournament to Pamplin Hall. Pamplin Hall is located just to the west of and behind Burruss Hall along the Drillfield. Campus map

As of right now, we've only got one school registered. I'll run the event either way, but it would be nice to have some additional registrations.

And we're done!

Washington and Lee (6-1) and UVA B (5-2) played an advantaged final after a full round robin. UVA B won the first game and Washington and Lee the second to win the title.

Virginia Tech B won a one-game playoff over UVA A for third, and Virginia C, Liberty A, and Virginia Tech A finished 5th through 7th after playing off a three-way tie. Liberty B finished 8th.

Thanks to everyone for all the help today putting together this tournament, especially Andrew Hart for producing an excellent difficulty-appropriate question set, Tori Steelman & Sabrina Hardy from Liberty, and Sarah Angelo, Matt Bollinger, and Dennis Loo for staffing the tournament.
