ACF Fall Northeast @ Harvard (11/03/12)

Post by gyre and gimble »

Harvard will be hosting ACF Fall for New England and the Northeast this year, on November 3rd. To register for the tournament, email Tournament Director Graham Moyer at [email protected] AND ALSO fill out this form. Make sure to include how many buzzers and staffers you can bring.

This is a packet-submission event, so please check with the guidelines posted here: viewtopic.php?f=8&t=13156 to see what is required of your team in terms of question writing. If you do need to write a packet (someone on your team's played a collegiate tournament prior to September 1, 2011, regardless of whether he/she is in high school or college) you should be aware of the upcoming deadlines, discounts, and penalties:

October 7, 2012: No penalty (-$25 for teams not required to submit packets)
October 14, 2012: +$25
October 21, 2012: +$50
After Oct. 21, 2012: The editors may grant one or more 24-hour extensions at an additional penalty of $10 per day.

We'll have more information regarding location and time as the tournament approaches.

Here is our site's fee schedule:

Fees:

$120 base fee per team
-$5 buzzer discount (per buzzer set)
-$10 staffer discount
-$10 per 200 miles traveled, one-way
-$25 if this is your team's first ACF tournament
-$100 if your team is new to quizbowl (this includes the new-to-ACF discount)

Hey, so we're changing our discount policy to be in line with ACF's official standards. That means -$10 for a moderator and -$10/200 miles, rather than -5$/100 miles.

We would be able to register as an Undergrad and Division II as long as all of our players are either in their first two years of college or their first two years of quizbowl, right?

Yes. In case anyone's curious about the general case, to be an undergrad team, all of your players must have graduated from HS no earlier than the 2008-2009 academic year. and/or must not have played any collegiate academic tournaments before September 2009. Also, if you've been awarded a BA or equivalent degree during the 2011-2012 academic year or earlier, you cannot play as an undergrad. To qualify as a Division II team, all players must have graduated from HS no earlier than the 2010-2011 academic year and/or must not have played any collegiate academic tournaments before September 2011, AND they must never have played at ACF Nationals.

This seems to be saying two different things. What about the case of someone who played a college tournament while in high school (before September 2011) but is in their first two years of college? The affirmative answer to David's question, as well as the eligibility rules for ACF Nationals last year, would seem to indicate that they would be eligible for Division II, but "all players must have graduated from HS no earlier than the 2010-2011 academic year and must not have played any collegiate academic tournaments before September 2011" would rule any team containing that player ineligible.

Sorry for rendering that extremely confusing by leaving out key "and/or"s. I've edited my message above--is this clearer now?

Please note that ACF has just updated their definitions of Undergrad and Division II. At ACF Fall and Regionals, any player who meets ACF's definition of “Undergraduate” and has never played ACF Nationals will be considered Division II-eligible.

I've tried twice to send an E-mail to the E-mail address specified in the first post, but have twice received an error message. The message I attempted to send is the following:
Brown will be sending one team to the Harvard Mirror of ACF Fall. We have just submitted our packet and will be registering with ACF shortly (once I figure out where I want the invoice sent). We will have neither staffers nor buzzers, but are eligible for undergrad/DII titles.

I E-mailed Guy a week ago, asking about the procedure for paying for things, where I should have the physical invoice sent, etc. but he hasn't gotten back to me and hasn't been in practice all week. Sorry about the delay in registration (I've just requested it sent my mailbox and will track down people who know these things to get it sorted).

The tournament will begin at 9 in Sever Hall. All teams should arrive BEFORE 8:45. Also schedules might be in flux--NYU had to drop out b/c of the hurricane and it's possible other New York teams will face the same problems, so please be very punctual so we can figure out the exact schedule we'll be using as soon as possible

Yeah, sorry we got caught up with HFT. We'll work on getting the stats up now. Prelim stats are already up, by the way, and everything should have been up the day of the tournament but SQBS crashed in the middle of the playoffs, then a staffer left so our statsperson had to read...and then a week went by.

Yeah, those stats are neither correct nor complete. Unless some unannounced score-keeping mistake has since been uncovered, we won that game against Hunter. The "final" against Brown is missing entirely.

Rounds 11 and 12 are missing. A couple of those games appear to be in round 0 and bizarrely MIT A's round 11 game against Teen Titans is listed as a round 6 game.
