Delta Burke Mirror-January 19, 2013-Ottawa, Canada

Post by minusfive »

Because what kind of country would we be if we didn't mirror Delta Burke?

UOttawa Trivia Club is looking forward to hosting people at its Delta Burke mirror, taking place in Ottawa, Canada, on Saturday January 19, 2013. There are many reasons to come:

1. This tournament is written by the engaging and worldly Chris Borglum and Billy Beyer. As such, it will be fun and is NOT packet submission.

2. This is a comparatively easy academic question set. It's perfect for a) people who are just getting started in quizbowl, b) the people who want to casually enjoy quizbowl without getting too hardcore, and c) the people who like to predate on groups a) and b) .

3. The tournament is being held in conjunction with Ottawa's mirror of Minnesota Open (a high-level academic tournament-occurring on the Sunday), so there's going to be something for everyone.

4. Open teams are allowed (allowing players who wish they were still in high school-you know who you are-to play as their soul dictates)

Details Follow:
What: Delta Burke (Academic Trivia) Quizbowl Tournament
When: Saturday, January 19, 2013, at 9:00 a.m. SHARP
Where: University of Ottawa Campus (Building TBD, likely Brooks Hall)

Cost: Base Fee $120
Working Buzzers (Maximum of 2 per team): $-10 (each)
Distance Discount (More than 200 kilometres, one way): $-20
Working Moderator/Staff (Must be Available Each Round): $-15
Shorthanded Discount (Two players or less): $-40

Minimum Fee: $40

This is the kind of tournament which will fill up quickly. Hit up jpalm010 "at" uottawa "dot" ca to avoid being disappointed, and we also have a facebook group event you are welcome to peruse and join. Hope to see you there!

EDIT: Bad with names. Thanks to Brendan McKendy for spotting my error and apologies (fixed now).

Should probably change "2012" to "2013" in this post and the Minnesota Open Announcement as well.

I am tentatively coming to this. I don't know if I will be playing with Waterloo for this or who will be on my team in the circumstance that I do.

Edit: I am currently looking for a team to play on. Preferably I'd get to play with some new people.

Yo, as of last night's practice, Mac's looking like sending 2 teams, maybe even 3. We have 8-9 people interested, we just need a way to get out to Ottawa now.

VERY IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT:
Tournament is now in the "new" FSS Building (120 University), FSS on map website here: http://www.uottawa.ca/maps/CampusMap.pdf (hint: look for Corktown Bridge and it's just the other side of Nicholas).

Please meet on the 3rd Floor by 8:30 a.m., as we will be starting games at 9:00 a.m. SHARP and will not be waiting for stragglers.

Parking can be found on this campus map (in .pdf format): http://www.protection.uottawa.ca/images ... AL_002.JPG
I'd recommend parking on campus, as while there is limited parking around campus (especially East of King Edward), it may not be available (it's also snow-banky and is a walk). I believe Saturday and Sunday parking should be relatively unrestricrted on most streets, however.

Looking forward to seeing you all.

The tournament was held today. 9 teams participated.
Over the course of a Round Robin and single-elimination playoffs, Waterloo+Friends (Aayush Rajasekaran, JJ Li, Duncan Chalmers, and last but not least Britney Castleman) emerged victorious, winning a tense final by 5 points over a McMaster+Friends team (Jay Misuk, Joe Su, and Aaron Kozak).

Special thanks to all who came out and especially our intrepid and amazing readers Ben Smith, Brendan McKendy, and Jonathan Weber.

Stats will follow shortly, likely tomorrow.
