Looking for Writers for Cdn Tournament

Post by minusfive »

Are you:

1) Going gray waiting for yourself/Jordan Palmer to be named best thing to happen to Quizbowl ever?
2) Bored of looking in the mirror at how good you look?
3) Need a break from the soul-crushing reality that is human interaction during the Winter Break?

If so (or if not), please join a writing team! The tournament I am soliciting interest in writing for is a "Cup" competition. Ideally, two teams (say, Midwest-Southwest-Northwest State versus University of Zimbabwe [which not only exists, but has its own Wikipedia page]) play a best-of-5 match to win a yearly cup. Obviously, the more packets we write (in multiples of 5), the more cups we can have. As a student at the University of Ottawa, I would like about 15 packets (at least 3 cups, and a mirror-able tournament). Difficulty would aim to be "standard difficulty" (no metaphysics on what that means please; let's assume it is a Platonic form).

Benefits of doing this:
1) Pecuniary benefit (we can talk about either paying you up front, or splitting the profits of selling mirrors)
2) Honing your quizbowl knowledge/writing skills
3) My personal gratitude (no cash or exchange value...yet)
4) You will be helping to jumpstart Canadian quizbowl (I hope)
5) This will be NOTHING LIKE the VETO writing fiasco of 2009

I have one person in (and one out), but no head writer yet, and I am aiming not to write any questions myself (so that I can play). If you're interested, please contact me at jpalm010 "at" uottawa "dot" ca or just post on this thread.

3 Last Things:
1) The aim of the cups would be to hold them in March, or maybe late February if that can happen. This means a lot of you might not be able to help as you get your WIT/TIT/VCU Closed stuff together, but if that's a concern, I'd much rather have you in some capacity than assume we will give you too much work.

2)I do appreciate advice, but please don't suggest we simply use other questions (like HSNCT) unless they're both a)completely new as of the day the tournament is held and b)fit exactly with the goals of building quizbowl and catering to both skilled and developing players. I'm aiming here for a bit more like NAQT (which is really popular in Canada) than anything else (having said that, this is an academic tournament).

EDIT: In the face of reality, a new unlikely thing was needed in things to be waited for.

I've been wanting to do this for a while (organize a Canadian-written tournament, that is) but kept not getting my act together, so I will be happy to join your writing team if you'll have me.

Hurray! To paraphrase Batman Begins:

Huma: You're just one man?
Jordan [Batman voice]: Now we're two... (jumps off building)

I'll help but not sure how big of a role I can take on.

I think 5 packets would be better served in a 6-team round-robin. Single games were enough for those Trans-Canada matches in old VETOs.

Regardless, I'll have to pass on this. I'll be busy at the high school level during the teacher dispute.

Yes, Buffalonians are Canadian enough (we send half our population to the Walden Galleria this time of year, de facto annexing your territory to us) but non-Canadians are very much needed and welcome on this writing team. Sinan and Dennis, welcome aboard; Forbidden Pat-maybe we'll see you next year.
