A medley of side events available for mirrors in May-September of 2013. If you or your institution submit a packet, you are welcome to do what you wish with the material listed below without any mirror fees. All others will be subject to fees of some kind.

This is an open event, and the format of play is entirely up to hosts.

Carleton's May 18th site will also involve a mirror of TAMIL - TAMIL is not a part of the official CAHOOTS material, so if you contribute to CAHOOTS you do not also get access to TAMIL. Contact Connor if you wish to play TAMIL in any way.

Do you need to write a packet in order to play? (most guerrilla tournaments you do, but I wasn't sure about this one)

No. Contributing to the tournament gives you the right to mirror it if you wish, but you certainly do not need to write anything to play.

That said, some sort of TV packet would be a welcome addition Mike.

I'd be interested in writing an astronomy theme packet.

EDIT: ehhh, I actually probably can't--especially since SPACE is happening

It is. I will be checking with contributors in the coming days.

Any updates to this? A five packet tournament seems slightly unpalatable.

We will also be mirroring TAMIL at our site Mike. I've heard from a few people from elsewhere about packet submissions which I am still coordinating.

Carleton will run our site for this on May 18th.

I will start corralling the contributors so that everyone has a better idea of what this set will actually contain.

I have written a tossup-only packet of mash-up puns, if that would be any of interest. It's at 20 tossups now, but I'm sure that I will come up with more ideas before the first mirror.

Seems like the kind of set that needs a skype mirror.

Various people at Oxford have been producing questions like this that have only been played at our practices. We would happily contribute a polished version of those as a packet.

This sounds fun, I might submit a video game packet that follows the ACF distribution, since writing video game questions is fun for me.

How will staff for this tournament work? Obviously if the author is present, he or she can read their packet. If I'm there, I will read the packets I'm not interested in I guess (which is most of them).

That's pretty much how it will work, Mike. Some of this will also depend on how many people show up. Which might be a lot, considering this might be the only competitive multi-packet pun trivia event, you know, ever.

I'm going to start a different thread about online mirrors.

Also, Max, I'm going to send the 1950's set to you for this at some point. Not sure now if I can make it to the actual site.

I posted this in the other thread, but for any mirrors after June 10 I'll try to contribute a fantasy lit packet, with answer lines like Cirdan the Shipwright or Jon Connington. (Obviously I won't be using these, but you get the idea.) Otherwise I'll save it for next year's version of this thing, which I hope happens forever.

Just so you guys know, I have a conflict on the 18th and won't be able to make it. Have fun playing the packets.

I have a kind of humor/vanity trash packet I could submit should there be need for it.

The packet is written. It is titled MUTE (Mash-Up Tossup Extravaganza). It consists of 32 tossups. I sent it to the Yale team, who will be playtesting it tonight in practice. If edits are needed, I will make them. If not, I can send them to you whenever is convenient.

I'm thinking about submitting a "Barbarians" packet. This will consist of 20/20 about various supposedly noncivilized peoples, their rulers, their actions, and their customs, as well as the response of "civilized" peoples to them. The target difficulty for this packet will be hard/open-level, and all tossups will be powermarked. I can't guarantee there will be "easy" answerlines in the set, but bonus parts will be easy-medium-hard, in keeping with what that means at hard difficulty level.

This will be the distribution:

6/6 European (non-steppe)
6/6 Steppe
4/4 Asian (non-steppe)
2/2 African
2/2 American

Also, some people have been asking, so: there are no deadlines for submitting to this, I'll take and submissions as they come in. It would be ideal if potential submissions could come in by May 15th or so in order for me to get them ready for the site on the 18th. That said, feel free to contribute after that date as well for the purposes of the online mirror or any other possible mirrors.

Sidenote: Are teams signing up for the site of this event? I think it's kinda cool that a bunch of theme packets/mini-side events will have a home on the archives after this regardless.

MCTC will be there, some Minnesota people will be there, etc.

Making quick edits to Pokemon packet. Difficulty level will be Indigo Plateau.

May possibly write a Japan packet (history, literature, fine arts, current events, popular media, RMP, geography).

My movie tournament won't be finished in time, but I can read my three Lit Quizzes if enough people are interested and haven't heard them already.

As a heads-up, this will be disproportionately philosophy since 1900. Also, it may not be entirely done by the first mirror, but I can send what I have to that mirror and complete it for later mirrors.

This sounds like the funnest thing since Questions Concerning Technology.

I still have like 10 questions to write for my video game packet, I'll get it to you as soon as I'm done.

I eventually decided on the following distribution about halfway through writing the packet:
10/10 role-playing games
10/10 Nintendo/other

Tossup answerlines vary - there are many where the answer is just a specific video game, however I took some time to write on a few stages, events, and characters as well. The distribution skews towards things I have played because it's easier to clue those games, of course. This packet is definitely easier than those in VAIN but harder than the other video packets in the Wastebin, *in my opinion. If you play tons of RPGs and games on Nintendo consoles [and handhelds!] then you'll probably like this even though you may still find parts of it challenging.

*: This opinion was formulated late at night. This packet is not so bad as long as you have experience with pre-2005 games. I'm old, leave me alone.
