Geography Monstrosity 5

Post by Important Bird Area »

The all-geography HSNCT side event will be returning for a fifth consecutive year, in its usual timeslot (10 pm to midnight, Friday May 24th, after the conclusion of HSNCT scrimmages).

Edit: I didn't finish writing it in time. This will now be a side event for NSC weekend. My apologies. --JTH

Two changes from last year:

1) Packet submission is optional (but encouraged). I will tentatively plan for five teams; please contact me if you would like to write questions for this event (partial packets and even isolated questions are ok). I will start assembling packets (from submissions and from my stockpile of outrageous geography answers) on Wednesday after HSNCT is at the printers.

2) This year's edition of GM will feature bonuses for the first time. Each packet will be 10/10 (instead of the 20/0 from previous years).

Distribution:

2/2 North America
1/1 Latin America and the Caribbean
2/2 Europe
1/1 Asia
1/1 Africa
3/3 your choice (including: Australia/Oceania/Antarctica, minor islands, common links, fictional geography, exo- and astro-geography, and/or real social science that actual geographers study)

(Editor's packet(s) may vary slightly from this distribution, depending on precisely what obscure geographic features are found in my notebook/haunt my dreams in the next ten days.)

To register, please email me (jeff.hoppes at gmail) or post in this thread.

We just passed 11 players expressing interest, so the plan for now is teams (of up to five players). Standard five-team schedule. If 26 or more people express interest, I'll make up some kind of ad hoc format and/or find a buzzer system that accommodates more than 10 players at one time.

I'm sorry to report that this tournament has been postponed two weeks to NSC weekend because I didn't finish writing it.

My apologies to the teams that wanted to play geography questions today; for those not attending NSC, I will arrange to have the packets read in the irc and at a Bay Area practice (for the Berkeley/Bellarmine contingent).

This tournament took place after the finals of NSC.

The 13 players were divided into two teams, Team Maryland (five Maryland residents plus Vimal Konduri of Cistercian deputized as an honorary Marylander) and Team World (everyone else). The set was played as one 40/40 supergame; in accordance with the NSC setting, the bonuses bounced back. Team Maryland defeated Team World 785-580; David Madden of Team World was the leading scorer.

Stats are here.

This set will be read in the irc at some point in the next few weeks, for interested players who were unable to attend NSC or unable to stay after the finals on Sunday. There will also be a Bay Area mirror early in the fall (at whatever high school tournament draws enough critical mass of interested Berkeley/Stanford/Bellarmine personnel). Anyone interested in the set as practice material should contact me.

Special thanks to Jasper Lee of Ohio State for his contributions to the editor's packets; Jasper, I hope you'll be able to join us in the irc and play those parts of the set that you didn't write.

I am pleased to report two additional instances of Geography Monstrosity 5:

1) By popular demand, it will appear at Ottawa's mirror of VCU Open (August 17th)

2) I will read the packets in the IRC this coming Friday, July 12th at 7 pm Eastern. I expect an international audience of geography players who were unable to attend the 2013 NSC.
