Michigan Fall Tournament: 10/12/13

This is the official announcement for the Michigan Fall Tournament, which will be available for mirrors starting on October 5th onwards. Most likely, Michigan will host this tournament on the 12th. The set is intended to be "regular minus" or "fall plus" difficulty, akin to the EFT or IFT tournaments of the past. The final distribution of each packet will be:

4/4 Literature (1/1 American, 1/1 British, 1/1 Euro, 1/1 World/Mixed)
4/4 History (1/1 American, 2/2 Euro including British Commonwealth and Ancient, 1/1 World)
4/4 Science (1/1 Biology, 1/1 Chemistry, 1/1 Physics, 1/1 Other Science)
3/3 RMP (1/1 Religion, 1/1 Mythology, 1/1 Philosophy)
3/3 FA (1/1 Painting, 1/1 Music, 1/1 Other FA with a roughly equal split of auditory and visual)
1/1 Social Science
1/1 Geo/CE/Miscellaneous

Which is basically the ACF distribution. Tossups will be powermarked during editing. Tossups will be between 6 and 8 lines in TNR 10 font, with the majority being around 7 full lines. Bonus parts will exceed two lines only when absolutely necessary. In terms of eligibility, we will allow any teams comprised of players playing for a single school / college to compete. This includes graduate students and high schoolers. The science editor will be Cody Voight; the head editors for this event will be Will Nediger and I.

We are going to run this tournament with non-mandatory packet submission. If you would like to write a packet for this tournament, you may do so, and will receive a substantial discount. A submitted packet should follow the ACF guidelines for formatting and distribution. However, no team will be required to write a packet to attend. If you intend on writing a packet, please contact me with this information; depending on the number of packets we anticipate receiving, we may close the packet submission option after a certain point. The rest of the packets will be housewritten (currently, we are planning on producing at least 6 housewritten packets, and this number may increase as we get a better sense of our progress on the set). The idea behind this is not to force new teams to be scrambling to work on packets at the start of the school year but rather to allow clubs or people with some extra time in the late summer months to get some writing experience for a set of this difficulty level. If the packet submission rate is anemically low, we will increase the number of housewritten packets to ensure that the tournament is completed and that its quality remains high.

We are currently looking for mirrors in most regions, so let me know if you are interested in mirroring the set. As mentioned previously, let me know if you are interested in writing a packet for this tournament. I will keep a running list of anticipated packets and mirrors in subsequent posts.

If any of this applies to you, or you have any questions about the event, feel free to post here or to email me at [email protected].

Is there any possibility that mirrors in some regions could be run on October 5, allowing a week between this and Penn Bowl in some regions? Looking ahead, it seems like we may only have one chance (the weekend of the 12th) to run our annual high school tournament, and I'm sure others are in similar situations depending on the specifics of their circuit.

How substantial will the packet discount be, and what is the deadline for submitting a packet? The specific numbers might be of use to people in determining whether to do it or not.

Yes, someone else has emailed me asking this as well. We will make this set available starting on the 5th. Most likely the Michigan site will still run on the 12th, however.

Are there any plans for a New England mirror of this tournament?

Hi, just wondering if someone could give a writing/editing update for this tournament. From Kurtis' earlier post, it looks like the submission numbers were indeed "anemically low." How many packets are being housewritten to fill out the set?

EDIT: Thanks for the info Will.

We've written 9 editors' packets, and will be writing 2 more, for a total of 15 packets.

I've updated the packet list and the mirror sites; yes, there will be a mirror held at Brown (look for that announcement soon, I think).

As Will said, we have 9 editors rounds virtually completed, and will be writing 2 more to finish up a 15 packet event. We are hoping to start playtesting in a couple of weeks.

We are starting to approach our field cap (18 teams) but can accept 1 or possibly 2 more teams.

This packet is supposed to be comparably difficult to IFT from last year-- was last year's IFT ever publicly released? I can't seem to find it on quizbowlpackets.com.

OSU will be bringing at least one and possibly two. Sorry for the late notice.

Are you guys going to create a private discussion forum for this tournament? I (and certainly others) have stuff we would like to share with you guys about the set.

I'm not even chief admin anymore!

But yes, you now have a private discussion forum. Select "Michigan Fall 2013 discussion" from your control panel.

WELCOME TO MY WORLD

Hey, since it was mentioned in the announcement: has IFT been posted anywhere?

Dumb question, but how do I find the new subforum in order to start a discussion thread, since it doesn't appear on my board index?

Whatever was wrong with this appears to be fixed now. (It's under "Collegiate discussion.")

Chicago (Max, Morgan, Bess (?), Gareth) won a single (no advantage) final game against MSU A.

I could be wrong, but I don't think we got 11.67 PPB in our game against Northern Michigan C. Could we have a check on that please?

That's probably because we had 605 points, not 410.

That being said, this was a fun tournament - thanks for hosting it, Will, Roxanne, et al.

By the way, whenever I click on the 'Complete" link on the database, I'm getting a message that says "Error getting report. It may not be uploaded."

Sorry about that. The full playoff stats are up: http://www.hsquizbowl.org/db/tournament ... /playoffs/

Joe, I'm not sure what happened, with that game, but I'll check the scoresheets again.

Belated stats correction: Kenyon has 0 bonus points entered in for their game against us in the prelims but the playoff game has the correct final score.

These stats corrections are taking a while. I understand if Peter is busy, and I'm not desperate to have them fixed right away, but it would be nice if someone acknowledged them. (I think Joe had some other correction but I forgot what it was.)

Yeah, sorry about that. I know that the stats need changing. I'm planning on going to get the scoresheets ASAP and figuring stuff out. Also, if anyone took stats for any of the incorrect games, it would be awesome if you can tell me. Thanks! and sorry for the delay.

Edt: Stats has been updated to reflect corrections
