Collegiate Novice @ VT (9/28/13)

Post by kirby661 »

Virginia Tech will be hosting a mirror of the Collegiate Novice tournament in Blacksburg, VA on Saturday, September 28.

This tournament is designed as an introduction to quiz bowl where novice players can play against teams of similar skill on questions that reward their level of knowledge. It is intended to give new players a positive first experience and get them hooked on playing.

Eligibility:
1. All ACF eligibility rules apply, except when they contradict the rules below.
2. This is a tournament for introducing collegiate novices to quizbowl. Consequently, no high school teams or players are eligible.
3. Anyone (who does not break Rules 1 or 2) who has never played quizbowl before is automatically eligible. Other academic competition does not count as quizbowl for this rule.
4. Players meeting one or more of the following criteria must apply to the head editor for special permission to play:
  • i. If you have already completed your second year of college (calculated from time in college, not credits). Time in a post-secondary high school program does not count.
  • ii. If you were ever on a playoff or top-bracket team at NAQT HSNCT or PACE NSC.
  • iii. If you have ever scored at least 30 points per game at any college tournament.
  • iv. If you have ever won any college tournament.
5. Anyone who does not fall into any of the four categories listed in Rule 4 is automatically eligible to play.

Fees:
Base fee: $15 per player. It is encouraged for teams to be composed of no more than 4 to maximize playing opportunities.
Buzzers: -$5 per functioning system with no less than eight working indicators
Staff: -$5 per staff member (lunch will also be provided)
Travel Discount: -$10 for one-way travel in excess of 200 miles (verified via Google Maps)
Minimum fee: $5 per player

Checks or cash are accepted forms of payment. We cannot accept credit cards. Please make checks payable to "Academic Competition Organization at Virginia Tech."

To Register:
Please contact me at jmchuberATvtDOTedu with the number of teams, buzzers, and/or staff you'll be bringing, along with a contact name and phone number for someone on the team on the day of the tournament. You are not considered to be registered until you receive confirmation from me saying so. Posting in this thread is not sufficient.

Hi, Michael! I've moved this post to Collegiate Announcements because its original thread is only for high school tournaments. There isn't a date claim thread for specific tournaments as such in college because each question set is used over a particular weekend or set of weekends, while in high school there are more sets available at the same time. That, combined with a somewhat different selection process for mirrors, prevents a lot of tournament overlap on its own.

When you're ready, you can edit your post into a full announcement for your tournament, and the teams that would look for it will find it here.

Field Update:
Liberty is the only team that has e-mailed me (at jmchuberATvtDOTedu) to register for this tournament. Make sure you let me know number of players, staffers, and buzzers you intend to bring.

Also, while posting to this thread is not sufficient to register, it is certainly not a bad idea.

Thanks

After our first two practices, it seems like we'll have at least one team, with more depending on whether or not people's parents have already planned to come for Family Weekend. I'll send you an email with a formal registration when I have more definite numbers, but we'll have at least 1 team, 1 buzzer, and 1 staffer.

Parking is unrestricted on weekends. Probably the best place to park would be the lot behind Pamplin Hall.

Don't park in any spot listed just S, or any lot that has a 24hours sign. Everywhere else should be fine. I specifically recommend the lot just north of pamplin, for small vehicles, and the lot north of Derring Hall for larger vehicles, like busses.
