And now that I'm not on a phone, I'll explain what this is.

It's the main game from the great Doug Loves Movies podcast. It essentially works like Name That Tune, only instead of naming a song by bidding on how many notes it will take you to recognize it, you're bidding on how many actors you will need to name a movie from a short description centering on the year and Leonard Maltin's rating and quotes from his review.

This version will featured less illicit drug references, fewer funny people, but as many puns in the categories as the original.

Quirks/rules that I'll go over again before the games start on Sunday: games usually consist of something like 3-5 people, which I'll limit it to three in the IRC version. After the first player, each following player can choose to either challenge the previous player to name the film or give a lower bid. The actors given after a bid correspond to the number of the bid given, but go from lowest billed up per Maltin's listing. Bidding can reach zero, in which case no actors are given, or negative numbers, in which case the player must name the movie and the top billed actor(s) in order. The clues given from Maltin's review are usually of minimal value, which is part of the fun.

I just did a super secret test run in #quizbowl and Evan Adams beat Mike Cheyne and Matt Lafer. Score was Adams 2, Cheyne 1, Lafer 0.

Point of advice for tomorrow: if you're the first player, be sure to not overbid.

Typing up the rules real quick so I don't have to do it multiple times.

This is like Name That Tune, only with actors and movies instead of songs and notes. Games typically consist of 3 to 5 players. Play starts with one player, who will choose from one of three categories. The moderator will then read off the year of the movie, Leonard Maltin's rating, and a quote or two from the review. The player who chose the category will then have an opportunity to bid on how many names he/she will need to name the movie. The next player will then have the option of either bidding a lower number or else challenging the previous player to name the movie.

A couple of notes for the bidding:

1) Bidding gets you the lowest billed names first. If a movie was listed by Maltin as Steve Martin, Gwyneth Paltrow, Demi Moore, and Sinbad, and you were challenged to name it after bidding one, you'd only get Sinbad's name. If you're not sure, playing conservative can be beneficial.
2) You can bid zero; obviously, this means you will get 0 actor names.
3) You can bid a negative number; this means that not only do you have to name the film, but the top two billed actors in order. For example, in the previous example, you'd have to say "Breakin' Bad 3: Fancy Free, Steve Martin, Gwyneth Paltrow." If you listed Paltrow and then Martin, you'd be wrong.

You get a point by either being challenged to name the movie and answering correctly, or challenging someone else to name it and they answer incorrectly. Games typically go for two points. It is possible to be frozen out on an individual point, but I'll do my best to make sure no one's frozen out of the entire game.

Mike wins because he knew TMNT II: Secret of the Ooze had Vanilla Ice in it. Tejas and Ian were the finalists. Thanks to them and other players Carsten, Stephen, Brian, Isaac, and Matts Weiner, Bollinger and Lafer.

This won't happen due to not having enough new categories.

I've been compiling a spreadsheet of LM game categories in preparation for my team's eight-hour drive for Ottawa Hybrid this March. I'd be happy to moderate some on the IRC sometime if anyone's interested.
