Texas Collegiate Novice 4 - 09/28 - Austin, TX

The University of Texas at Austin will be hosting a mirror of the Collegiate Novice tournament in Austin, TX on Saturday, September 28.

This tournament is designed as an introduction to quiz bowl where novice players can play against teams of similar skill on questions that reward their level of knowledge. It is intended to give new players a positive first experience and get them hooked on playing.

Eligibility:
1. All ACF eligibility rules apply, except when they contradict the rules below.
2. This is a tournament for introducing collegiate novices to quizbowl. Consequently, no high school teams or players are eligible.
3. Anyone (who does not break Rules 1 or 2) who has never played quizbowl before is automatically eligible. Other academic competition does not count as quizbowl for this rule.
4. Players meeting one or more of the following criteria must apply to the head editor for special permission to play:

• i. If you have already completed your second year of college (calculated from time in college, not credits). Time in a post-secondary high school program does not count.
• ii. If you were ever on a playoff or top-bracket team at NAQT HSNCT or PACE NSC.
• iii. If you have ever scored at least 30 points per game at any college tournament.
• iv. If you have ever won any college tournament.
5. Anyone who does not fall into any of the four categories listed in Rule 4 is automatically eligible to play.

Fees:
Base fee: $10 per player. It is encouraged for teams to be composed of no more than 4 to maximize playing opportunities.
Buzzers: -$5 per functioning system with no less than eight working indicators (max 1 per team)*
Travel Discount: -$10 for one-way travel in excess of 200 miles (verified via Google Maps)
Minimum fee: $5 per player

*You forfeit the right to the buzzer discount if you are not present 20 minutes before the tournament is scheduled to begin, so that we have sufficient time to set up all buzzers.

Pizza will be provided for an additional $2.50/person. If you do not want pizza, there are food options on Guadalupe St.

Checks or cash are accepted forms of payment. We cannot accept credit cards. Checks should be made out to myself.

Logistics
Registration for the tournament will begin at 9:30 AM. The tournament will likely be held in Mezes Hall. Parking is available in Brazos Garage, on MLK Drive, for $15 (assuming under 8 hours spent in the garage). Round 1 will begin promptly at 10:00 AM. Lunch will be held from approximately noon-1PM.

An exact format will be decided upon once we have a better idea of how many teams we will have.

Texas, Texas A&M, and Rice all brought two teams to compete in the Collegiate Novice tournament. We played a single round robin, rebracketed into top and bottom brackets of 3 apiece, and ran another round robin. The "bye" teams in the afternoon rounds played against each other in a game that did not count to the standings.

After 7 games, Texas Orange cleared the field at 7-0. A&M White and Rice Grey were tied at 4-3, and played off for second place. A&M White emerged victorious, 360-210.
