DRAGOON Online Mirror (and at UW) - 11/16/13
The Quizbowl Team at UW will host an online mirror of DRAGOON on Saturday, November 16th, 2013. We will run this tournament over Skype.
This will be an open tournament, although we will not be allowing super-teams (these will be decided based on my discretion).
All players on a team must be in the same physical location in order to play. You are required to have a microphone capable of muting in order to play.
We'll get everything organized at 11:00 AM EST on 11/16/13. Games should start by 11;30 AM. Keep this in mind when thinking whether you can attend. If we do 9 rounds (our likely number for this tournament), we anticipate the tournament will end around 8 PM EST.
I'm going to impose a field cap of 10 teams for this tournament. If we get a lot of interest and secure enough moderators, we will consider expanding the field cap.
The entry fee for this tournament is $20 per player, although there is a minimum fee of $40 per team in order to encourage teams rather than solo players. Your team can play for $10 per player if you provide a moderator.
I will send a logistics mail with all of the information on how to play over Skype when we get closer to the tournament date.
To register, please e-mail me at [email protected].

EDIT: I'm going to register as a solo team for this tournament (pending a SoCal site materializing).

For the microphone rule, do you need a microphone to play period? I get why you want it capable of muting, but what using headphones and just typing in answers?

That will probably be okay. The main idea is to make sure that there isn't any echo coming through.Cheynem wrote:For the microphone rule, do you need a microphone to play period? I get why you want it capable of muting, but what using headphones and just typing in answers?

By the way, we're already just 2 teams away from hitting the field cap. I'll investigate expanding the field cap, but that will depend on how many moderators we have and some other factors.

The field is now closed. You can still register to be on the waitlist, though.

Re: DRAGOON Online Mirror (and at UW) - 11/16/13
What are people's thoughts about formats if we expanded to 12 teams?
I don't want to run an 11 game round robin, as 9 or 10 rounds is really the limit for these tournaments because they take longer to run and start later than regular tournaments.
Would a format where we broke into 2 brackets of 6 teams, played 5 prelim games, then took the top 4 teams from each bracket and did 4 cross-bracket games (plus a full round robin of 3 games for the bottom 4 teams) be acceptable? That puts us in the sweet spot of 9 games (plus finals) for these tournaments, except for the bottom 4 teams which will only get to play 8 (although I'd be open to giving them an exhibition for game 9).

Re: DRAGOON Online Mirror (and at UW) - 11/16/13
I may be biased because I see my own team on the wait-list and really want to see how much they've improved, but even without that bias I would always vote for giving more teams an opportunity to play quizbowl regardless of who they were. So I'd be very much in favor of anything you can do to expand the field. Thanks! :)
I like the crossover too, so that at least the top teams get to play a larger field. (Though I also wouldn't mind an 11-game round-robin. I know other teams may not have all day, though. I literally wouldn't have been able to play this tournament any other day - I'm really lucky this tournament comes right after a huge clusterf*k of exams for me, and is basically my one weekend off before going back to my study hole.)

Ok, we're officially expanding to a 12 team field. I don't expect any additional field expansions.

Re: DRAGOON Online Mirror (and at UW) - 11/16/13
Well, Vanderbilt found out 12 hours before the tournament that they wouldn't be able to attend a tournament that literally doesn't involve leaving one's house to attend, so we have an open spot.
If anyone wants to play as the 12th team for free at this point, send me an e-mail ([email protected]).

Thanks to all the teams that played this tournament and the moderators who read for it. Matt Weiner defeated Stanford in a 1 game final to win the tournament.
Overall things went as smoothly as these tournament usually go. Sorry for one of the rooms getting the tournament a bit behind.
Prelim and playoff stats are at: http://www.hsquizbowl.org/db/tournament ... all_games/
