Fernando Arrabal Online Mirror?

Post by Mike Bentley »

We're entertaining hosting an abridged online mirror of Fernando Arrabal on Saturday, 11/23. We'd probably limit this to 4 or 6 teams and do around 5-7 rounds.

Unlike our previous online tournaments, I'd be willing to let teams with people in 2 (but not more) separate locations play.

This would obviously be an open tournament.

Entry fee would be pretty small.

If you're interested, shoot me an e-mail at [email protected]. If we get enough teams, I'll go forward with an official announcement.

We have 4 teams confirmed. I'm going to cap the field at 4 for now. Other teams can sign up on the waitlist if there's interest, and we'll expand if we get 7 teams (or if there are people out there willing to be freelance moderators). My plan is to do a double round robin of 6 total rounds (and finals if necessary). We can see how people are feeling after this whether we do any additional rounds.

We'll start the tournament at 10 AM pacific time (1 PM eastern time). I'll send out details shortly.

Please place me on the waitlist; my only caveat is that I would like to not be a one-man team.

It looks like we now have 7ish teams if the free agents combine into teams of 2.

I'd like to experiment with having many people on a Skype call. I may log onto the IRC tonight to get some volunteers. If the experiment is a success I may allow for teams of people in 3 different locations.

I will say that based on my own experience playing Skypebowl fests, it's quite possible to have a reader in one site and people from at least, 4, probably 5 different sites hearing and playing questions (assuming everyone's internet collection is fine). There's going to be occasional lag or trouble if there's buzzer races (occasional bonus snafus)...but somehow I don't think this is the tournament filled with such problems!

Ok, let's go crazy and say you can have people from 3 different locations on one team.

If the free agents can work themselves into 2 teams, that would be great.

On even further reflection, we have enough moderators to not need a bye. And free agent teams formed over IRC. I've updated the team list. Field is now capped.

We'll do a round robin for 5 prelim games, then do a single elim top 4 playoff. The bottom 2 teams will get to play 2 exhibition games. We'll play a 3rd place game so the top 4 teams all get 2 playoff games. I'll send details tonight or tomorrow.

I'd like to play this tournament if it's still possible for a free agent to join a pre-existing team. Does any teams have open slots?

Mike said last night he would allow 5-person teams, so presumably if it's logistically possible, you can join a team.

I'd prefer to play with people I've never played with before such as Alberta or Dartmouth if they're looking for extra teammates.

The restaurant where I'm working has for some reason called a restaurant-wide meeting tomorrow morning from 8 am to 10 am, so I will miss registration and the first round of the tournament but hopefully will be back in time for the second game.

Thanks to the teams that attended and the moderators who read. Special thanks to Ophir for reading several rounds after Jacob's connection wasn't working.

Ike's team beat the Auroni/Mik/Mike team in the single elimination final to win the tournament. Rutgers + Dan Passner got 3rd place.

Stats are at http://www.hsquizbowl.org/db/tournaments/1949/.

Quick stats correction: Mitchell's stats were swapped with mine in the UW game. (He should be 0-0 and I should be 3-1)
