VCU Open/second summer open this year

Post by Matt Weiner »

This is an interest check on whether people might be willing to produce one or more of several tournaments. VCU will not be doing a traditional VCU Open this year (that is, we will not be writing an entire tournament in-house). However, any of the following options are on the table:

*Some VCU-affiliated people collaborating with multiple other writers on 1 or 2 tournaments. The most aspirational goal here is something like a more idealized 2010 VCU Open series (2 full tournaments of different difficulty with 10 or more total writers working on them, so that each person contributes about 3 packets' worth of material). If the right writers can't be found to do 2 tournaments, then maybe just 1. If you would be interested in working on such a project, post here.

*A packet-submission event. I'm willing to supervise this with a science editor and a packet-screening approach to ensure that most of the material is usable out of the gate. Fees will be adjusted accordingly (that is, you will pay less if you are a writing team and more if you want to play but aren't deemed to be experienced enough to write a packet). This could take the form of a normal event or something experimental, e.g. using NAQT format or something even more exotic at a summer open difficulty level.

If we do either the second option or the 1-tournament version of the first option, then the second day will be opened up to any side events people may be working on, and to a return of Tricontakaipentagon.

This will be held in the first or second weekend of August, as is traditional. What would people like to see/be willing to travel to Richmond or one or two mirror sites for?

I wouldn't mind helping out with Option #1, although my contribution would be relatively limited (let's say around 2 packets worth of questions).

I'm interested in playing the first and possibly the second, but most likely only if the final product is mirrored nearby (either Ann Arbor or somewhere in New England).

I'd be interested in working on the first tournament option.

EDIT: I would probably be interested in contributing freelance questions as well if you go with the second option.

I could contribute to the first option, and otherwise might play if it were mirrored in the Great Lakes area.

I'd be interested in a packet-submission tournament, since I'd like to play tournaments this summer (due to not being in the country to play regular fall tournaments). I'd prefer something around the difficulty of BARGE or VCU Open 2011, i.e. regular-plus, but not quite as difficult as 2010 or 2013 VCU Open.

Option 2 would be a lot of fun. It'd be nice to have something a little crazy (NAQT format + lightning rounds or something); you could even make it guerrilla and I'd probably still go

Would people be interested in converging on the west coast for a mirror? I really enjoyed when the bulk of quizbowl traveled to Stanford for Cardinal Classic, and it'd be fun to do something like that again.

As someone living on the West Coast I'd be thrilled to have a big West Coast tournament happen again.

I'd even be happy to host something in Seattle provided people wanted to fly out, but the Bay Area seems like it would be a bigger draw.

I'd be willing to travel to any given site if there were a half-decent field (west coast seems like a fun idea).

I am working on a project for quizbowl right now, but it won't be ready in time for this, so I can't offer any help in terms of writing or editing (other than writing part of a packet, if it's submission)

I'd be interested in playing a Bay Area mirror of this tournament.

And if people were flying out for a West Coast tournament I've always wanted to have a big quizbowl party at my dad's house on a hill in the wine country if people wanted to come out a day early.

I'd be interested in playing this, but probably would not fly out to the Worst Coast to do so. I might be willing to write, depending on how many of my long-stored hard/Creative question ideas are workable and how much fun I'd have making them happen. (That said, I'd prefer the wackiness of such a tournament be distributional -- i.e. more Your Choice and Thought that usual -- rather than lightning rounds or anything.) Check back with me in a month or so.

I think it's fair to presume most people are interested in having a second summer open. So can we do a poll to determine which option people prefer? We really need to get moving on this if it's going to happen.

We've been looking for a venue to demo our quiz bowl-playing robot. We missed the boat on the national competitions, but this sounds like a good venue if it happens.

I haven't heard much response to my attempts to get someone to write science for this. What do people think about a tournament with very little science in each packet? The alternative is probably not doing a full-scale tournament at all.

I'd be happy to play either a tournament with very little/no science or a fully-scienced tournament. I imagine, predictably, that science players would be far less happy with the latter outcome.

Is there a fully-assembled non-science writing corps at this point (i.e. without me on it)?

I too need to seriously edit my travel plans depending on when this tournament happens, so it would be really great if we could have any more details about a) timing b) the nature of the tournament.

The tournament will be held at VCU on August 2, with mirrors on that date based on people e-mailing me asking about them. It will contain 15 centrally written packets. There will be side events on August 3. More later.

Hey, so people have asked about playing Imaginary Landscape no. 2 at VCU Open. Would there be interest in that? The tournament is very nearly all edited, and should be done well before August.

Matt W. told me that a Sunday slot was still available after the Texas tournament; would that work for interested players? Let me know.
