MIT will host the northeast mirror of DEES, or the Demonstratively Excellent Educational Saturnalia, on Saturday, November 22. This will be a regular-difficulty packet-submission tournament. [UPDATE 11/10/14: This tournament is now packet-submission optional, as described in full detail in Victor's post here. The short version is that if you have not already written a packet, you don't need to; if you did write one, your tournament fee is probably now smaller for having done so.] You can find more information about the question set, including the dates for packet submission, in the main announcement. In particular, please note the rules for who must write packets:

the distribution that submitted packets should follow:

*5/5 Literature (1/1 American, 1/1 British, 1/1 European after 500 CE, .5/.5 World, 1.5/1.5 Anything. Please be sure to represent poetry, drama, and fiction and incorporate different time periods and nations)
*5/5 History (1/1 American, 1/1 World History, 3/3 European/Canadian/Australian, with 1 question on classical history, 1 on British history, and 3 on continental Europe included)
*5/5 Science (1/1 Bio, 1/1 Physics, 1/1 Chemistry [only 1 organic chemistry question], 1/1 Math and optional Computer Science [i.e. you can either write 1/1 math or 1 math and one CS), 1/1 Astronomy and Earth Science)
*3/3 Fine Arts (1/1 Painting, 1/1 Music, 1/1 Other, with both visual and auditory arts represented)
*3/3 RMP (1/1 Myth [1 Greco-Roman, 1 other], 1/1 Religion [1 Judeo-Christian, 1 other], 1/1 Philosophy [please vary time periods])
*1/1 Social Science (to copy the ACF guidelines – “Possible topics for this category include economics, psychology, sociology, linguistics, anthropology, political science, social criticism, and law. The two questions should not come from the same field of study. Questions on Supreme Court cases go under history; other law questions may go here.)
*The remaining 2/2 will comprise of a single question from each of the following categories: Popular Culture, Current Events, Geography, and “Your Choice.” I want your choice to be a wild place for you to write questions about something that doesn’t neatly fit in another category but which is interesting.

Packets should be submitted to Charlie Dees at [email protected] [email protected]. Furthermore, please note that this tournament is closed; teams must be composed of players from a single school. [UPDATE 11/10/14: This tournament will now allow open teams that consist of entirely of players NOT enrolled in high school or college. If you are enrolled in an educational institution, you must still play for a team representing that institution. Open teams may be subject to TD approval to ensure that there are no tournament-breaking "superteams."]

Fees:
Base fee: $120 per team
Working buzzer discount: -$10 each
Approved moderator discount: -$15 each (we definitely appreciate teams bringing moderators; please let us know earlier rather than later if you plan to bring one so we can give you the okay)
Travel discount: -$15 (more than 200 miles one way according to Google maps)
Plus the appropriate packet discount or penalty (if applicable)

We can accept payment on the day of the tournament in the form of cash or checks made out to "MIT Quiz Bowl Team". If you will not have payment ready on the day of the tournament, it is your responsibility to alert us ahead of time. If you do not pay us on or before November 22 and do not contact us ahead of time with a good explanation for why not, we will assess a $25 late fee and be quite persistent in securing your payment as soon as possible. If you need us to fill out any forms or send you an invoice, please let us know well ahead of the tournament date.

To register, email me at [email protected] with the number of teams, buzzers (if any), and moderators (if any) you are bringing, as well as a cell phone number at which we can contact you on the day of the tournament. Posts in this thread will be considered expressions of interest, but you must email me the preceding information to be considered officially registered. We are setting an initial field cap of 18 teams, to be lifted if there is sufficient interest and staff.

Check-in on the morning of the tournament will run from 8:30 to 9:00 AM in room 6-120, which is located on the first floor of MIT's Building 6. Games will start as soon as possible after everyone has arrived, and will take place in the nearby Building 4.

For teams unfamiliar with traveling to Boston, you should know that while MIT is easily accessible by public transit, parking on campus is extremely limited. There is a small parking lot at 139 Massachusetts Avenue (on the corner of Massachusetts Avenue and Vassar Street) that several teams have used in the past, though some have encountered difficulty parking there recently; other information about parking is available here. On public transportation, take the Red Line to the Kendall/MIT stop, which is marked along with building 6 on this map.

We are actively recruiting teams from around the area; at the very least, we will have a couple of house teams if the tournament doesn't get any larger. I hope that the recent removal of the packet-writing requirement will encourage a wave of signups.
