ACF Regionals 2015 Northeast @ Harvard (1/24/15)

Post by UlyssesInvictus » Mon Dec 01, 2014 3:04 pm

Hello, all! This is the general announcement for the Northeast site of ACF Regionals 2015, which will be hosted by Harvard on January 24, 2015. I (Raynor Kuang) will be tournament directing. ACF Regionals will be a packet submission college-regular tournament, and the primary method for qualifying for ACF Nationals. The global announcement can be found here.

Time, Location, and Transportation
Registration will take place from 8:30 to 9:00 AM, with the tournament to begin soon after. The tournament will take place in the first floor of Sever Hall, in Harvard Yard. There are a variety of parking options around Harvard Square, but I highly recommend taking public transportation instead: the T has a stop conveniently in Harvard Square.

Distribution and Fee Structure
Distribution and fee structure are described in the global thread linked above, as well as packet submission guidelines and resulting fee penalties.

Registration
To register, send an email to [email protected]rd.edu with "ACF Regionals" in the subject line and the team name(s), number of buzzers, number of staffers, and other relevant information. Additionally, fill out the ACF provided form, linked here.

Because of staffer limits, this tournament will be field-capped at 18 teams, with a waitlist maintained. The best way to increase that field-cap is to confirm that you're bringing extra staffers, so please rassle some up!

Other
For ACF related questions, refer to the global thread or contact [email protected]. Tournament related questions can be directed to my email, listed above.

We hope to see you at what should be a great tournament!

Just a note that despite that, despite that link Stephen just posted, teams still need to make sure to register by email with me! This is especially important since we now, with Columbia's registration, only have two spots left open in the field (not including the waitlist).

We're trying to expand the field right now, but I don't want anybody to depend on this. If you can at all provide capable staffers, then I'd recommend this as the surest way of increasing the field size.

With ACF's okay, the field is now closed and the field is final, assuming no teams have forgotten to alert ACF and/or me.

Since 17 is an awful number to work with, if any teams would like to split off a team, or register a non-packet requiring team, that would be fine by me. Otherwise, we'll use a house team (unless people do have suggestions for very good 17 team formats).

The OP has been updated with a few details.

Edit: MIT C has dropped. The splitting/non-packet teams offer has been rescinded. That said, still let me know if you'd like to do so, so I can see if we can get to 18.

Our final field is down to 12, with Columbia B and all of Brown dropping.

After a few (snow related) delays, we're off to the races! Staaaaaaaaaaats can be found here:

http://www.hsquizbowl.org/db/tournaments/2750

and will be updated throughout the day.

After playing an effective best of 3 in a row, and going 1 each, MIT and Yale played a winner-take-all game with MIT coming back from down by over 150 to take the tournament. Stats will be up as soon as my hands stop shaking.

All stats are now up. In addition to overall 2nd, Yale takes the undergraduate 1st, and Dartmouth takes undergraduate 2nd. Princeton takes DII 1st, and MIT B takes DII 2nd.

Much thanks to all my staff who helped make this tournament happen. I'm glad both they, and all the teams (well, 3/4 of them) could make it out through all the snow.

A reminder to everyone who played here not to discuss the set outside of the private subforum that's been set up. I know some teams asked me if the ACF editors would be distributing the set to teams that played, but I think the answer to that is: nope.

Since SQBS doesn't take full round reports, here's a general description of the last 3 games between Yale A and MIT A:

Round 11 of the RR: Yale takes it by 20. A brief break for individual prizes.
First game of advantaged final: MIT takes it by 20.
And since just a score doesn't do it justice, here's the running scores of the winner-take-all:
Question Yale A MIT A
1 40 -5
2 70 -10
3 100 -10
4 100 30
5 120 25
6 150 25
7 145 45
8 145 75
9 175 75
10 215 70
11 215 100
12 255 100
13 255 130
14 255 160
15 285 160
16 280 190
17 280 220
18 280 250
19 280 290

At this point, Neil calls a timeout, freaks out a little, and then confidently declares the subject of the last question (incorrectly).

20 280 320

Congratulations to both teams for a truly stunning series of games.

I didn't manage to record Neil's amusing pre-tossup dialogue but I did manage to record that final tossup, which was itself quite interesting to hear play out. I'll post it when the set was cleared. Thanks to Harvard for hosting a great tournament - it's good to be back in the game (and win my first number-one-scoring prize!)
