Oxford Open at Carnegie Mellon, 1/17

Post by Ndg »

Carnegie Mellon Quiz Bowl will host a mirror of Oxford Open on its Pittsburgh campus on Saturday, January 17, 2015. Despite the name, this will be a regular closed collegiate tournament.

You can read more about the set here.

Field: Due to staff limitations, the cap is currently at 10 teams. We will have enough rooms for at least 16 teams, so if I can find more staff (or if teams bring moderators) I will raise this.

Registration: To register, please email me at nadig[at]cmu[dot]edu

Fees and discounts are as follows:

Base fee: $100
Buzzer discount: -$5
Moderator discount: -$15
Travel discount: -$10 per 200 miles one way
Minimum fee is $50

Payment: we prefer to receive checks on the day of the tournament. However, if you need to send payment ahead of time, you may contact me to arrange this. Please make checks out to "Carnegie Mellon University". We can also accept cash.

Schedule: On the day of the event, registration will take place from 8:30 to 9:00 AM, with round 1 beginning no later than 9:15. Full logistical details will be sent to registered teams about one week before the tournament.

FIELD (10):
Detroit Catholic Central (2)
Maryland
McMaster
Ottawa
Pitt (3)
Waterloo
Wright State

BUZZERS (7):
House (3)
DCC
Maryland
McMaster
Wright State

I'm interested in playing this, but can't confirm a registration yet. To that end (and given the small field cap), is the stat that there have been no registrations yet still accurate?

If there's not enough interest on this day, I (and possibly other Wright State people) would be willing to come to this site on a later date.

I, and possibly some other people from Columbia, might also be interested if this were to be hosted later.

If there isn't enough interest for this, we might be able to move to 2/14. I won't do so now, since there are three teams that have expressed tentative interest here, and the February date probably won't work quite as well for our club.

I don't speak for him, but Jay Misuk at McMaster is also very interested in attending this site. He will know for sure by this weekend.

I haven't gotten any official registrations yet, but I have added to the first post a list of everyone who has expressed interest in playing this on the 17th.

Not that this is a problem, of course, but I haven't yet received this logistics e-mail (if it's found it's way to my inbox but I've somehow missed it, please let me know).

Since we have a time, the only real questions I still have are location (what building?), parking (we can find this out, but it is somewhat building-dependent), travel advisories (we assume it will be snowy), and tournament format (assuming at this point 9 teams).

Sorry, I haven't sent it yet. (That's a line that I copied from our high school tournaments, where we have an earlier registration deadline.) I'll send it out soon.

I have eight teams registered at this point, not nine. If someone thinks they have registered but is not listed under "FIELD" in the original post, please tell me right now. (If we end up with nine teams, I will try to scrape together a house team.)

We're at a rather awkward nine teams, and it doesn't look like we'll have enough people for a house team, so I'd love to see one or two more teams sign up.

How would two more teams help?

Also still waiting on that logistics email / post. I'll be hitting the road tomorrow around noon and would like to have those details at that time.

Complete stats are now available.

Since there weren't enough packets to run a final, Maryland won by finishing one game ahead of Detroit Catholic Central.

Rounding out the top bracket were DCC B and Pitt. Top scorers in the prelims were Jordan (Ottawa), Aayush (Waterloo), Neil (Pitt), Jay (McMaster), Dan (Maryland) and Jack (DCC).

Just wanted to thank Andrew and all the volunteers (and our very strong opponents!) for a very enjoyable time in Pittsburgh. You have a lovely campus!

Echoing Mr. Palmer's sentiments here. Thank you to Andrew Nadig for running a highly enjoyable tournament and to all the readers for doing a great job reading 12 rounds. Congrats to the winning team and thanks all for a great Saturday!
