ICT Predictions

ICT's coming up and there's no thread! I've decided to kick things off by making a list of exciting prop bets that I'm willing to accept action on. Odds are included and slightly negotiable. Please message me if interested, note you can only take the side offered (so you can't bet on John wearing a bowtie, for instance). Or just post real/funny predictions of your own!

No one pretends to have lost a buzzer race (100-1)
John Lawrence is not wearing a bowtie (40-1)
Jake Sundberg unretires, makes appearance at ICT (25-1)
John Lawrence beats Eric Mukherjee to a science tossup, again (10-1)
Four teams in the top ten of the pre-nationals poll wind up in the same prelim bracket (5-1)
My flight is delayed (3-1)
The final game of the tournament comes down to the final question (3-2)
Weather on the day of the tournament breaks 60 degrees (3-2)
Someone makes a really stupid post in this thread (1-1) -- I'll stop taking action on this bet at 5 pm CST. If you bet with me, your stupid posts don't count.
Coin flip is heads (1-1)
Matt Bollinger bolls so hard (1-100)
CHRIS RAY (1-1000)

The plane train breaks down on me again (2-1)

Joel Gluskin is not wearing a sports cap (500-1)

The Canadians don't eat lunch at a buffet (10-1)

The French guy on my D2 team makes it through the entire day without being asked to repeat his answer slowly and in English (50-1)

Some prop bets on my own:

At the tournament, a player has negative PP20TH. (1-1)
Chris Ray or Jordan Palmer do not have the most negs (2-1)
Someone negs on the first word of a tossup (2-1)
A team not in the Northeast, Mid-Atlantic, Midwest or the West Coast make the top bracket (2-1)
Matt Bollinger will not be top scorer. (3-1)
It rains during the tournament on Saturday. (5-1)
An accidental buzz decides a playoff bracket (5-1)
Virginia/Penn/Chicago do not win ICT. (20-1)
John Lawrence eats a burger sans mayonnaise (100-1)
The tournament runs smoothly, starting on time, no buzzers malfunctioning, no rooms being more than a couple minutes late, and no one complaining about any tossups at the tournament. (1000-1)

EDIT: Forgot West Coast!

I mean if there's some team out there that won't be able to make it, speak up now so we can make this a reality!

Quick predictions:
1. Chicago
2. Virginia
3. Penn

I'm not a betting man, but I'd put a lot of money on Stanford to prove this false.

I tried putting $100 on this, but Max wouldn't let me. Don't trust him.

Alabama's D2 team is actually Jonathan Thompson playing solo in his record fourth D2 ICT after extorting a loophole which deems him D2 eligible. (10-1)

More speculative predictions:
  • Ottawa fails to make it through customs when Jordan Palmer, asked to declare any firearms, channels his inner Marianne Moore and says he has only "imaginary guns with real bullets in them"
  • Charles Hang assembles all the quiz bowl photos he's been taking this year into a still-by-still re-creation of La Jetee, winning the Prix Jean Vigo despite not being French
  • Grace and Jacob burst into a gender-flipped "La ci darem la mano"
  • If Marshall Steinbaum is staffing, he will also give a reading of his Piketty space fanfic "Capital in the 31st Century"

Sadly, I won't be at ICT (though you people will have the pleasure of subjection to my will when I staff ACF Nats next month). And I don't like science fiction or similar bedtime stories. BUT, this suggestion did spark the amusing idea of economics seminar fanfic. Are there any good treatments of the academic seminar in fiction? In David Lodge's Small World, there are a number of amusing scenes at conference sessions but none at a sole-presenter seminar on campus that I can recall. A fictionalized treatment of Gabriel Zucman's presentation of "The Hidden Wealth of Nations" paper at the Chicago Econ department last year could be a huge bestseller.

I'd take this, since the likelihood of John Luther Adams getting tossed up seems pretty close to zero.

United Airlines not :capybara:ing up some of our flights worse than they are right now (9001-1)
At least one of our players get stranded overnight Friday in one of Dulles, Newark, or O'Hare (1-1)

Note to NAQT personnel: The correct people have been notified of our crisis. I don't think these odds are accurate. We're all upset at United right now. .

If you bet tons of money with Joe Nutter that I would magically unretire and play ICT, you are a very nervous person right now.

*In all seriousness, I hope everyone's flights get sorted out and you guys have a wonderful tournament.

It is very strange to have an ICT this year where being at O'Hare is actually considered being stranded.

Despite my promise in the official United Airlines :capybara: thread, I still ended up on a United flight from SFO to ATL yesterday afternoon (and it was, somehow, vaguely adequate).

Should have bet on "Chris Ray beats Eric to a video game question" instead
