We Have Never Been Modern - VCU Open

Post by Mike Bentley »

This is an announcement for We Have Never Been Modern, a doubles* tournament I'm writing on technology and consumer goods, both past and present. The tournament will be a bit like Will Butler's enjoyable Questions Concerning Technology, although with a greater emphasis on history and businesses and a lesser emphasis on the technical side of computing (i.e. things like NoSQL or CDNs from that tournament).

6/27 EDIT: The tournament will be finished for VCU Open. If you want to mirror this at some other event go ahead. There is no mirror fee.
6/28 EDIT: Fixed the distribution to actually add up to 20

The tentative (tossup-only) distribution is as follows:

History of science and technology - 6
Business, consumer and social history - 5 (these two categories blend a bit and are most subject to a distribution revision)
Computer-related things - 5
Academic stuff which doesn't fall into the other categories - 2
Trash stuff which doesn't fall into the other categories - 2

I may change this distribution up a bit as I write more of the tournament in June and July.

I'm currently planning 6 packets. It's possible I'll write more but I don't want to commit to more than that at the moment.

Of the 22 questions I've written so far, 18 of them are quite gettable, at least by the giveaway. I'm not sure if I will continue at this rate (I suspect some harder stuff will get through), but there will be at least some questions that everyone can enjoy.

*I'm not completely locked into this being a doubles tournament if another format works out better.

Looks like there are too many other tournaments with a greater potential audience so I will not be running this at VCU Open.

I'm still planning on eventually writing this.

Updating this thread to indicate that the tournament is being written for the VCU Open weekend.

So far I have around 4 packets written. Shooting for 7ish.

I now have 7 packets written (but not edited). Not planning on writing any additional packets at this time, but who knows.

Is there any interest for playing this over Skype? I'd love to do that on the weekend of the 22nd or the 31st.

Alright, I'll host some form of online mirror of this tournament. Will need to check my schedule for the best date. Will be sometime between August 22nd and September 7th.

I, in another thread wrote:I would definitely be interested in playing this set sometime, whether it be at a site closer to me or online. I never got a chance to play Questions Concerning Technology and have specifically avoided looking at it in case I somehow got an opportunity to play it against others who also haven't seen it, so it'd be nice to play a similar set before it gets posted to the archive.
For those like me who are unable to make the online mirror on Sunday (which conveniently was just about the only time this weekend or the last two weekends I already had plans at a specific time), is there enough interest in another online reading of some kind, whether it be on Skype or the IRC?

The questions have been posted. I'll read Packet 8 (which contains maybe 7 questions new to everyone who didn't play the online mirror, and 12 questions new to everyone who didn't read through the tiebreakers and extras) tonight at 10 PM eastern in the IRC. If there are enough people there who haven't otherwise heard the set I'll read a couple of my favorite questions, but don't plan on reading all of the packets.

This appears not to be true, or if it is I don't see the set on the collegiate section of the packet archive.
