Bride of the Guerrilla Tournament (Film 2016)

Post by Cheynem »

So I don't want to overstuff the summer calendar, but it seems like there's nothing but side events or side event type things for the second open, so I'll announce this. It is intended to be a hybrid academic/trash event on film.

This is a guerrilla tournament in that there will not be any editing done. You will e-mail the packets to me (I'll paste a date once we have an idea when the second summer open is, or if there's no room, when it will be run in the future), but I'll just compile them, not edit or even redact them.

This is the distribution. Note that you can go outside categories if you like if it doesn't directly contradict. For example, you can do a foreign director for the director category, it's just that 2 have to be on foreign films. It skews a little bit American I guess.

Packets are 20 tossups. Try and use a mix of "academic" and "trashy" answerlines and clues. Include powers but don't make them too long.

2 foreign film (any era)
2 independent or explicitly art film (any era)
4 any type of American film, pre 1980 (these can be indie/art or trash, don't have to be questions on specific films)
4 any type of American film, post 1980 (same as above)
1 on a performer (please try and write a creative tossup here and not an IMDB filmography)
1 on a director (any era)
1 on something related to film that is not a title, director, or actor (for example, music, cinematography, setting, common link)
1 on a common link (common setting, common action, etc.)
1 on a "bad film" (however you define this--explicitly a very trashy film like Tiptoes but not that)
1 relating to animated film (doesn't have to be a kids film but try to avoid super niche stuff here)
2 "Your Choice" (any type of film question)

We will see how many packets we get. I'll write at least one. I know Tricon is also a guerrilla tournament--feel free to write for both!

This is great.

What's the intended difficulty?

I'd say regular difficulty as a baseline, with some answerlines and clues harder than that. Your basic rule of thumb is that it's no fun playing impossible packets, but I would also hope to see at least a few adventurous answerlines.

I've finished my packet for this. I believe Will Nediger has too. If you have finished a packet, send it to me. If you are writing one, post here or e-mail me so I can let sites know how many packets there will be.

I only have to write 3 more tossups for mine. It will definitely be done before the U-M Side Event day.

Is there a final deadline by which the packets are being compiled, or are submissions open until the Side Event Weekend(s)?

Does 2% academic and 98% trashy count as a mix? If so, I'm working on a packet. If not, then I'll still write a packet, but I'll tone down the sharks.

I would enjoy collaborating with someone on a packet for this, and very much hope this is played at Columbia. Hit me up.

I will accept packets through Friday night and at some point send them to other sites. I know VCU wants them; if your site wants them, e-mail me.

If there are people not playing this live, I'll read my "team"'s packet tonight at 8:00 (so about 1.25 hours from right now) in #guerrillabride on the IRC.

This packet by quizbowl favorites Sam Bailey and The Rob Carson will be read any minute now. Also, Jonathan Magin is offering to read his packet for this event as well. Don't miss out! (Unless you're going to hear it live, in which case feel free to miss out.)
