2016 ACF Fall Global Announcement (5 Nov 2016)

Hello,

I am pleased to make the global announcement for ACF Fall 2016, which will take place on the weekend of November 5, 2016.

Editors
Gaurav Kandlikar will oversee the production for the set, which will be edited by Jonchee Kao and Bruce Lou of UC-Berkeley, Rohith Nagari of Brown University, Itamar Naveh Benjamin of the University of Missouri, and Kai Smith of UChicago. Mike Cheyne, Eddie Kim, and Richard Yu will provide guidance as "advising editors" in history, RMP, auditory fine arts, and trash.

Hosting
We are actively seeking host bids across the US, Canada, and the UK. Because high school teams are not eligible to play in collegiate mirrors of ACF tournaments, we are also seeking bids for high-school only mirrors. Hosting ACF Fall is a fantastic way to generate funds for your team early in the competition year and cut down on travel commitments for newer members of your team. To submit a bid, please fill out this form by 11.59 PST on Sunday, 7 August. We will evaluate bids as they come in and reserve the right to grant bids before the submission deadline.

Mirrors have been selected and are listed lower down in this post

Packet Submission
Any team with at least two people on it who played a regular, collegiate, academic quizbowl tournament prior to September 1, 2015 is required to submit a packet, unless it is a high school team attending a high school-only mirror. High school teams playing at HS-only sites are exempt from any packet submission to ACF tournaments.

All submitting teams will be assigned a half-packet distribution upon registration using the central registration form which will be made available shortly. The assigned distribution is non-negotiable. Please contact us at [email protected] if you would like a half packet assignment before the registration form is available

We have clear guidelines on what your submissions can or cannot be, with information on penalties for flouting the guidelines. Please go through this submission checklist before sending your packet- if your packet violates these guidelines, I will ask you to resubmit it and consider the final submission to calculate packet discounts.

Submit packets to Gaurav Kandlikar at [email protected] and use “ACF Fall 2016: [Team Name]” in the subject line.

Submission schedule
The submission schedule is as follows:

11.59 PM PST September 10: -$30
11.59 PM PST September 24: -$15 (-$30 if optional)
11.59 PM PST October 8: no penalty (-$15 if optional)
11.59 PM PST October 15: +$25
11.59 PM PST October 22: +$50
After October 22: +$10/day until October 29; teams who are required to submit a packet and do not submit one by November 1 will not be allowed to play.

Fees
Base fee: $135
Buzzer: -$5/functional system
Staffers: -$10/staffer
Shorthanded fee (teams of 1 or 2 players): $60
"New to Quizbowl" discount: $100
For schools which did not send a team to any regular collegiate academic tournament (exclusively Novice tournaments do not count) since September 2013, and have no one on the team(s) claiming this discount who played those tournaments for another school

The fields for all of the following mirrors can be found here.

If you have any other questions, please contact us at [email protected].

Thank you!

From looking at the individual site announcements, it seems like it was changed to:
ACF Fall Announcement Template wrote:Any team with at least two people on it who played a regular, collegiate, academic quizbowl tournament prior to September 1, 2015 is required to submit a packet.
This then raises a question: if I, or another otherwise packet-required person, were to play solo at an ACF Fall site, does that mean I'm exempt from writing a packet?

Given that this is most likely the situation that would apply to me, I would appreciate some clarification here.

I like this change to help situations where one veteran pioneer is at a school with no previous team, and they get by with not having to write a pack. Is ACF also encouraging the situation where a school's A team divides up and each takes 2-3 first and second years to battle, as a way to better serve getting newer players into the game?

Actually, for discount purposes, I want to write my half-packet, which given that I've been writing questions for years, is more or less of usable quality.

Joe is right- I've made this change to make it easier for teams that are led by a single slightly-experienced player to compete in ACF Fall. I discourage highly experienced players from competing solo simply to avoid the responsibility of contributing to a half packet; instead, I hope that such experienced players help younger teammates write questions and grow into contributing members of our community.

The bottom line is that this rule change was made to allow teams that had a single experienced player to hear our set without the headache of hassling fresh recruits to write questions. A number of teams have missed out on playing for this reason for the past two years. The rule change does mean that solo players like Nolan don't have to submit a packet (or have a few more days to write their questions for the same discount), and I am OK with that. I am confident that people won't try to "game" this system, but if I'm wrong about this, we can reconsider the new rule.

As we begin to approach the first packet deadline in about ten days, I want to remind teams to go through our packet submission guidelines and formatting checklist before sending me your packet. This word document can be used as a template for your submission.

I'd also encourage players that are new to the packet submission model to read through ACF's primer on packet submission, written by Matt Jackson.

The new ACF fee schedule has been added to the main post. Hosts will be asked to edit it into their announcements shortly. ACF has also made a number of changes to gameplay and eligibility rules- please see this post for details.

I submitted three half-packets for Cambridge A/B/C before the first packet deadline - they're not listed above and I haven't been told there's a problem with them. Please let me know if anything needs fixing.

The second post of this thread has been updated with packets received by the no-penalty deadline. Please let me know if you think you should be on this list but are not.

All the remaining teams who are required to submit a packet but have not done so are encouraged to submit as soon as possible.

Teams who submitted a packet this last weekend should have received a confirmation email from me this morning. I will update the list above when I get to a computer later today.

Teams that are required to submit a packet but haven't yet done so have until this Saturday for the $50 deadline.

EDIT: received packet list updated

Is there any chance a HS mirror of this will be held in the Southeast this year?

Can you double check whose packets you have? There should be one submitted from American University. We're sending two teams, but we only got one packet in time.

Sorry, I don't anticipate adding any mirrors this late in the game.

I've sent you a PM to follow up on this.

In general, the packet list above might be a bit off as of the past few days. Invoices from Gautam will reflect the information in our official discount schedule; email me if you think you're getting a different number on your invoice than you expected.

Quick announcement for all teams:

You should all have your invoices now. If your invoice is wrong, then send me an email: [email protected]

I'm going to be traveling for the next 30 days, so please give me 72 hours to respond to your emails.

Did this set get posted online? If not, is there a point at which it will be?

There's a link to the set here, though one would think it should have been posted to the archives.

Amazingly, this is still not up on the archives, and the dropbox link is no longer working.

The same is true for ACF Regionals.
