Jordaens Visual Arts

This is a somewhat overdue announcement for Jordaens Visual Arts Tournament, a tossups-only visual fine arts tournament to be played on Sunday, July 23rd at CO 2017. Named in honor of beloved Flemish artist Jacob Jordaens, the set will consist of 9 packets, and is being written by myself and Sarang Yeola. It will be played in a doubles format and cost $10 per person.

The distribution, adapted from CO Visual Arts 2015, is as follows:
10 2D Art, including painting, prints, drawing, photography, etc.
4 Pre-1870
4 Post-1870
1 Photography
1 Other
3 3D Art including sculpture, installations, assemblages, land art, etc.
1.5 Pre-1870
1.5 Post-1870
3 Film
2 Architecture
1 Pre-1890
1 Post-1890
2 Other, including thought, criticism, performance, history, mixed, methods, etc.

Tossups will be capped at 9 lines prior to power-marking, and, like CO Visual Arts 2015, will be marked with superpowers (worth 20 points) and powers (worth 15).

My first proposed name for the set, which Sarang cruelly rejected, should explain what to expect: Questions Using Interesting, Novel Themes and Engaging, Notable Material on Artistic Topics: a Set Inscribed by Jordan and Sarang (QUINTEN MATSIJS). We intend to use CO difficulty to test deep knowledge of core-canon artworks and artists, as well as to clue widely-studied, but under-asked aspects of art history. As such, expect a good mix of answerline difficulty, from ACF Fall to CO+. We will not commit to further subdistributions for nationality, era, or difficulty, but will apply good sense in balancing answerlines along these dimensions. Expect roughly two questions per packet focused on art created outside of the post-medieval Western world, and no more than two questions per packet on topics outside of the current quizbowl canon.

To register a team, please email me at jbrownst at terpmail dot umd dot edu. The field will be updated both in this post and in this spreadsheet, which free agents can also use to find teammates.

Sorry if this is the wrong thread, but what, if any, are other events happening on the CO Sunday?

I believe the other planned events are It's Lit and Naveed Bork Memorial.

Beautiful, though in all likelihood I won't be at CO so hopefully this can get some other mirrors too.

Seeking a teammate for this - I'm not particularly good at things that aren't painting or photography.

I'll be around for this. I like architecture and am OK at painting, but don't play this with me if you want to win.

Extremely interested! I've been dabbling in the VA studies, so my plan is to (super)power things I know and to sit there on everything else!

If that sounds good to you, hit me up.

Pick me if "decent generalist" seems like your idea of a good teammate. Also, I'm fun!

Billy Beyer and I will make the pair with the highest combined age (and perhaps lowest ppg) in this competition.

I'd like to volunteer to staff this. I'd also be open to playing if necessary to keep the number of people playing even.

Looking to play this with someone who knows old paintings and/or film. By the time this tournament happens, I'll have two degrees in art history and will undoubtedly still suck at paintings questions.

edit: playing this with B

With 15 teams signed up, I wanted to state explicitly (as I should have done a while ago) that the field is capped at 16 teams due to the number of packets in the set (9). If no one objects, we'll do the same schedule as the 2015 Visual Arts event--two brackets of eight, with winner of each bracket (to be determined by play on tiebreaker packet in case of tie in record) playing the final and the rest of the teams playing a crossover game on the finals packet. After the 16th team forms, remaining free agents should look for teams to join as third players. I'd prefer that the less competitive teams take third players first, but will approve most combinations that don't obviously break the field.

EDIT: the field is now full. In addition to finding existing teams to join, interested individuals are welcome to form teams and register for the waitlist, to be added to the field in case of drops. In the days before the event, members of teams remaining on the waitlist will be distributed to two-person teams in the field.

I'll be assigning free agents to teams tomorrow evening, but feel free to find your own team before then.

I was under the impression Jason Asher already asked you to waitlist the two of us (initially as a team) - but in case he did not, we are interested in playing if you are assigning free agents to teams. Thanks.

I don't believe I heard from Jason, but in any case you guys and the other free agents have been assigned to teams. Brackets will be posted tomorrow.

Brackets are as follows. Please contact me privately if they look seriously unbalanced.

Bracket 1
Athena Kern/Joey Goldman
Aidan Mehigan/Bernadette Spencer/Chris Ray
Raynor Kuang/Robert Chu
Charles Hang/Patrick Butenhoff/Michael Coates
Ryan Humphrey/Marianna Zhang/Foster Hughes
Auroni Gupta/Will Nediger
Matt Bollinger/Trevor Davis
Dylan Minarik/Young Lee/Andrew Wang

Bracket 2
Derek So/Daniel Lovsted/Kenji Shimizu
Alan Lin/Tamara Vardomskaya/Jason Asher
Will Alston/Ike Jose
Rob Carson/Kai Smith
John Lawrence/Jacob Reed
Chris Borglum/Billy Beyer/Jonathan Magin
Andrew Hart/Matt Lafer
Mike Etzkorn/Koby Theobald

Also, thanks to some very generous contributions by Mike Bentley, the set now has the 9 packets we actually need for the planned schedule. Previous posts have been edited to reflect this change.

Personal apology to those of you negatively affected by the insanely delayed pizza order--Papa John's was a nightmare to work with, including calling a number different than the one I asked specified, claiming they made calls to the correct number that I mysteriously never received, and at one point hanging up on me (!) when they realized it was me on the phone again asking about the order. Thanks for your patience!

If I have time, I'll read the tiebreakers packet and the three extra tb questions after Auroni reads the It's Lit packet.

Also, thanks to Billy Busse, Halle Friedman, Jason Golfinos, Eliza Grames, Saul Hankin, Ophir Lifshitz, Tejas Raje, and Ryan Rosenberg for moderating, to Joe Su for handling stats, and to Ophir for setting up online scoresheets/packets and compiling advanced stats. Here are some player buzz details from the latter.

EDIT: thanks also to Alex for handling the pizza order, without which my terrible TDing would have been even more obvious.

Full detailed stats from the CO site are available here. Full detailed stats for the Skype mirror are here. Thanks again to Ophir for making these!

Edit: please PM or email me or Ophir with corrections or problems accessing the sheets.

I'd be really interested to see global detailed stats (Skype and CO combined), if it's possible with Ophir's stats system.

Also, since I haven't said so already, this was the best arts set I've ever played. It was well worth the half-day I took off from studying for the bar.
