On behalf of the University of Toronto Academic Trivia club, I will be TDing the 2017 edition of VETO East at Toronto. We'll be doing a few things differently than the Vancouver mirror this year, but never fear! The spirit of VETO that you know and love (or have different strong feelings about) is still alive and well!

When/Where: VETO will be happening on Saturday, August 12 at the University of Toronto. This is the day before the Toronto mirror of Super ACRONYM, which you can learn more about here. Start time and location will be updated closer to the date of the tournament.

Costs/Writing: This tournament is a free, pack-submission tournament. Each team playing will have to submit a pack of 21/20 (21 tossups and 20 bonuses) with the following distribution:

---------------------------------------------------

3/3 Science (at least 1/0 or 0/1 each of chemistry, biology, and physics)
3/3 History (vary times, places, types of history)
3/3 Literature (vary times, places, genres of literature)

3/3 Thought and Beliefs (religion, mythology, philosophy, and social science; at least 1/0 or 0/1 of each)

2/2 Fine Arts (1/1 each of visual and audio, including at least 1/0 or 0/1 painting/sculpture and 1/0 or 0/1 classical music/opera)

2/2 Geography/Pop Culture/Current Events (at least 1/0 or 0/1 of each)

5/4 your choice (this includes your tiebreaker. This can include up to an extra 1/1 of each of the bolded categories above, things that don't fit neatly into any single category above, general knowledge, etc.)

21/20 Total

---------------------------------------------------

Canadian Content: Of the above, at least 2/2 must refer to Canadian people, places, things, events, and created works (this differs from the typical 4/4 requirement). You are welcome and encouraged to write more than this if you want.

Multimedia Questions: The multimedia (visual, auditory, tactile, olfactory, gustatory) question will be optional at the Toronto mirror. You are still encouraged to write multimedia questions, but it's not mandatory.

Question length: We've had a problem with the tournament running very long in the past. As such, there will be a length cap on questions for this tournament. Tossups must be between 5-7 lines in 10-point Times New Roman on a standard letter size page with 1-inch margins(before bolding for [optional] power and adding pronunciation guides). Bonus parts must be no longer than 2 lines each with a one line intro (your intro can be up to two lines if the first bonus part is one line or shorter). If your multimedia question would take longer to perform than a question of this length would reasonably take to resolve, then it's too long.

Submission Deadline: There is a hard deadline of noon on Friday, August 11 for submitting your pack. If it is even a second later than this, you will be dropped from the tournament. Please email your packets to me at [email protected] so that I can send them to the Vancouver site.

Editing: VETO is a guerrilla tournament, which means that your packets will be edited by no one. The one exception to this is that if you go over the length limit for questions, they will be cut until they fit, grammar or sense be damned. Seriously, please keep your question length under control.

Registration: You may register by emailing me at [email protected] with your name and the names of the people on your team (if your teammates are TBD, that's cool). The deadline for team registration is 11:59:59pm, Sunday, August 6. There is a field cap of 13 teams for this tournament. You can also view the team formation sheet here.

See you in August!

What is the target difficulty of this tournament? In previous years the guideline was "SCT D1", but it wasn't really followed.

Side event update: Kate Kohn has allowed us to run her trash side event, Kate Kohn's Colossal Conundrum, so we (pending volunteers to read) will be doing this after VETO concludes.

I will read Kate's side event.

Ian's et al. are unable to come with him, so the team is going to be Jay, Ian, Peter, and myself.

Samir Mechel from Westmount is looking for teammates. Is there any team that has room for him?

Edit: Eric Smith is also looking for a team to join. If you have room and don't mind taking either of them, please let me know.

Edit 2: Dean Ah Now is also looking for a team.

Copy paste of the logistics email:

I'd like to thank you all for your interest in playing VETO 2017! As we're less than a week away, here are the things that you'll need to know for this weekend:

PACK SUBMISSION
I'd first like to remind you that your packets are due by noon on Friday, August 11 (noon central is fine for the Chicago teams). Please make sure that it conforms to the guidelines laid out in the original post. If you do not email me your pack by then, then you will not be permitted to play.

FREE AGENTS
As we have six teams, we're.going to need to scrounge up a seventh team to round out the field. As such, I'd like to invite the three free agents (Samir, Eric, and Dean) to play on a team. As this is a special circumstance, this team will not be required to submit a pack and will exist only so long as it makes the field size odd. (this is currently the case. If this changes, I will let you know as soon as possible)

LOCATION AND TRANSPORTATION
The tournament will take place both days in Sidney Smith Hall (100 Saint George Street) on U of T campus. For those who have never been, it’s the building with an enormous banner reading “Arts & Science” on it. Our control room will be SS1084, on the first floor. The tournament will begin at 9:00 AM sharp. Please be there by 8:30am.

If you are driving, the closest parking can be found underground at 107 Saint George Street. If you are taking transit, get off at St. George subway station (St. George exit, not Bedford Road) and walk south along Saint George Street until you reach the building.

Please note that the TTC subway will be closed from St. George to Sheppard West stations on August 12 and 13 (the upper left arm of the big north-south 'U' on this map: https://ttc.ca/Subway/interactive_map/i ... ve_map.jsp). If this impacts you, please plan accordingly.

FORMAT
With seven teams and three packets from the Vancouver site (one of which will be used for the seventh team). We'll be playing a 7-round round robin (teams will need to read during their bye round) followed by a 2-round final using the Vancouver packets. If the number of available packets or the field size changes, then I will let you know the revised schedule.

Lunch will last approximately an hour and will take place at approximately noon (though no earlier than after round 5). There are a variety of cheap lunch options near campus (on Bloor Street to the north and College Street to the south).

PAYMENT
This tournament is free! We will have some other events though that you will may have to pay money for though (see below)

SIDE EVENTS
There will also be side events running throughout the weekend:

Saturday lunch: An all-opera pack produced by Zhenglin Liu.
Saturday post-tournament: Kate Kohn's Colossal Conundrum (assorted trash)
Saturday evening: The completed portion of XENOPHON. (the spiritual successor to last year's listory) This tournament will be directed by someone other than me.

XENOPHON will be $10 per person. All other side events will be free of charge. You are of course welcome to play/not play whichever side events you please.

We will also be hosting mirrors of Super ACRONYM and There Will Be Stock Clues on Sunday. You can contact either myself or Meghan Torchia if you have any questions about this.

BONUS PRACTICE
We have the option of hosting an extra bonus Toronto quizbowl practice on Friday evening from 6-9pm. This will run only if there is sufficient interest. If you are interested, please tell me and I will let you know whether it is happening or not at a later date.

Finally, if you have any questions/concerns that I haven’t addressed here, please feel free to reply to this email/comment on the forum announcement. If an issue arises on the day of, the fastest way to contact me is to send me a text at [REDACTED].

Looking forward to seeing you all soon!

tl;dr of logistics email:

- your packets are due by noon Friday, please get them in
- there will be a free agent team so long as it makes the field a nice number
- tournament control is SS1084 and round 1 starts at 9am. Don't be late!
- Seven-round round robin then two round playoff. Lunch around noon but not before the end of round 5.
- Side events: Zhenglin's opera pack (free!), Kate Kohn's Colossal Conundrum (free!), XENOPHON ($10), Super Acronym and Stock Clues Sunday (not free; inquire for details!)
- Friday quizbowl practice: you want it, you got it. But let me know if you want it.

Thank you everyone who played opera! We had to end after 16 tossups, but Athena from Chicago won with 75. I hope everyone enjoyed finding out how the distribution worked! Also, I'll be mirroring this on Discord at some point, so please don't discuss the pack with others until it's posted.
