Math Monstrosity on the Cloud (June 18th)

Post by CPiGuy »

Hello. This is an announcement of an online mirror of Math Monstrosity to be held on Sunday, June 18th. Information about the set is here. We will start around noon Eastern time, which should be both late enough for West Coasters to play and early enough that we'll be done before it's midnight in the UK. The cost to play will be $10 per person. You may sign up here to play as a team, as a free agent, or to moderate.

Hello,
I was wondering how this would be set up! Would it be round robin/playoff style or is it completely dependent on how many people are signed up. Very interested though!

Hello again,
Would these packets ever be available for the public (on quizbowlpackets.com)? Thank you!

Right, so: the format will be doubles, like the other runnings of this set. The exact manner in which it is run will depend on the number of teams/players who sign up, but it will likely form a traditional format, either a full round robin or, if the field is large enough, a bracketed format. After the Skype mirror, this set will be posted publicly unless there are plans to run it at one of the summer opens, in which case it will be posted publicly after that.

This tournament is in one week, so if you haven't gotten a chance yet to play Math Monstrosity and would like to, here's your chance!

Assuming I'm actually available for this, I'm a free agent. If you wanna be on a team with someone that refers to this tournament as "Maths Monstrosity", and will potentially neg >50% of the questions, hit me up.

Roughly how late will this run? Put another way, how likely is it this wraps up before 8?

Well, we're starting at noon, and there will be at most twelve rounds of tossups-only, so it should almost certainly be done before 8.

A couple updates:

-- I'll make a Skype room containing everyone sometime Sunday morning. If you haven't given me your Skype username somehow, you should do that.

-- If you're a free agent, try to arrive a few minutes early so that we can pair people into teams.

-- I'll make a schedule up shortly before we start based on the number of teams; it'll likely be one or more full round robins followed by, maybe, playoffs depending on how the numbers work out; the target is ten rounds to allow packets for an advantaged final (although I'd consider doing eleven with the consent of the field). The last two packets will be read to everyone who wants to hear them in a shootout fashion.

-- Moderators are of course appreciated. (If you played/moderated this at one of the NCTs, fear not -- I've edited the packets to make them significantly more moderator-friendly.)

I was hoping to play this, but it turns out I won't be able to. It looks like an odd number of people were signed up, so I hope this isn't too much trouble.

Hi! I'm interested in playing, is it not too late? (I may bring a teammate and I'll announce that by tomorrow, is that also OK?)

Definitely not. If you don't have a teammate, sign up on the free agent list.

As much as I was looking forward to playing this, due to a change in plans beyond my control, I'm afraid I won't be able to attend after all. Apologies to any tentative teammates/opponents who were looking forward to witnessing the Mother Of All Negstorms.

Alright.

I could definitely use additional moderators. If you're not doing anything tomorrow, please consider reading for this.

Also, if you're signed up but haven't given me your Skype username, you need to do that.

This happened. Iterable Premouse (Sam Braunfeld, Samir Khan) cleared the field and won. Neil Gurram (Earl of Ham Sandwich's Theorem) was top scorer with 109.5 PPG. Thanks to everyone who played and moderated!
