Jordaens Visual Arts on Skype (July 15th, 2017)

Post by Jem Casey »

I’m pleased to announce that an online mirror of Jordaens Visual Arts will be held at 8 pm EST on Saturday, July 15th. The purpose of hosting the online mirror before the set is played on Chicago Open Sunday is twofold: to fine-tune through playtesting what will already be a mostly polished set (similar to the EFT Skype mirror), and to give some interested players who won’t be able to play at CO or on later summer dates a chance to hear the set. I don’t think a small pre-CO online mirror will compromise question security or the legitimacy of the main site, but please do voice any concerns to the contrary. Of course, anyone who will be at CO is strongly encouraged to play the set in person.

You can sign up on the “Skype mirror” sheet of this doc. The field is currently capped at 6 two-person teams, with some field expansion possible according to interest and the availability of moderators. Given that participants are serving as playtesters, but will nonetheless be playing a finished quizbowl set in team format, the fee will be $5 per person.

If someone who knows film is looking to join with somebody who likes to think he knows stuff that's not film, drop me a line. Though ultimately I'm not that particular, so just let me know if you're interested in teaming!

It looked like the field was filling up so I put myself down for the last spot, but I don't have a teammate at the moment. I'm fine playing with anyone who doesn't neg too much.

Seems like expanding to 8 teams wouldn't be a bad idea though, if there's available staff.

Locking down a fourth moderator in the next 18 days shouldn't be an issue, so the field has been expanded to 8 teams. Additionally, team size has been expanded to triples.

I'm looking to play. I'm good with most visual arts except film.

Jakob and I would appreciate a third player, preferably one who knows architecture and photography. If interested, you can reply here, PM me, or email me at [email protected].

I do know some things about art and don't know many people- let me know if I can join your team! (If numbers don't work out, I would be glad to read as well.)

Alec and I are both dropping from the field so there's room for two other people on Daniel's team now.

Hi all, we are excited to be hosting the Skype mirror Saturday (7/15). We will be meeting on IRC at #jordaens at 7:50 pm ET with the plan to begin rounds at 8. We plan on running an 8-team round robin with a final on the 8th packet if teams are tied at the end. There are currently three spots open on two separate teams, so if you're on the free agent's list or are at all interested in playing now's your chance to sign up. To avoid delays, I ask that everyone perform the two following steps, as soon as possible:

1) Add readers on Skype. Our usernames are listed below:
Jordan: live:jbrownst
Ophir: hftf__
Sam: srombro
Sarang: saryeola [edit: my username is actually syeola]

2) Also, please pay Jordan before the tournament. He prefers you pay by Venmo (@Jordan-Brownstein-1) but If you prefer a different method of payment you can email Jordan or me to work out an alternative method of payment. Our emails are [jbrownst at terpmail dot umd dot edu] and [email protected].

If you have any other questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to either of us.

Due to some player movement, we only have seven teams for this Skype mirror. We are looking for at least one volunteer (preferably two) to join this last team so everyone has a chance to play more packets.

May want to get this corrected in the Google docs (Ophir is listed as htft__ --- that is, the "t's" and "f's" are switched). Otherwise, folks'll be adding some Skype rando.

Thanks, Travis.

We've still got two spots open--now's the time to sign up if you're interested.

Additionally, it seems that most people haven't added the moderators or paid yet, so please do those things (or remind your teammates to do them) before the tournament so we can start on time. See you all at 7:50 EST!

Thanks for running this Skype mirror. This was definitely the most enjoyable fine arts tournament I've ever played. It seemed to do a good job asking about a wide variety of topics without being overly difficult. If anyone was on the fence about this tournament, they should definitely make sure they play it.

Even as a non-arts player who went 0-5-1, I really liked this set. It did an excellent job exploring the answerspace, especially re: regions that don't get asked about a lot

I'll second that comment. This set did a great job of covering what seemed to be generally lesser-explored, if not completely original, answerlines. People should play this set.
