Hello, everyone! I am pleased to announce that Princeton University will be hosting a mirror of WAO II on November 18; full details for the set can be found here. I will be serving as tournament director.

Location and Time:
The tournament will take place in Robertson Hall. A map of campus can be found here. This post will be updated later with parking information.

Check-in will begin on the day of the tournament at 8:00 am and will close at 8:30 am. We hope to begin the first match by 9:00 am.

Eligibility:
Per the original announcement: “open teams will be allowed to compete under mandatory packet submission. Please note that open teams include “chimera” teams composing students from multiple institutions (high school or university). Regular school teams can play without submitting a packet, but may do so for an additional discount.”

Registration and Fees:
School team base fee: $140
Open team base fee: $120
Buzzer discount: -$5 per working system.
Staff discount: -$10 per staffer, subject to TD approval. Staffers will also be provided with lunch.
Travel discount: -$10 per 200 miles traveled one-way, as determined by Google Maps.

See the main post for the relevant packet-submission discounts.

To register for this tournament, please e-mail me at [email protected]. Please include in your email the number of teams, buzzers, and staffers you plan on bringing, as well as a cell phone number that can be used to contact you on the day of the tournament. If you don’t hear back from me within a few days, please try again.

Payment can be made in the form of cash or check on the day of the tournament. Checks should be made out to “Princeton University Quiz Bowl.”

Lunch:
Lunch will not be provided, except to staff. A number of eating options are available on Nassau Street at the north end of campus. Teams can also purchase lunch at Frist Campus Center.

Naveed, Ophir, and I are looking for a fourth teammate, preferably someone who can buzz on SCIENCE and is willing to write a few SCIENCE questions for our submission this week. PM me if you're interested.

Can we please have a field update on this so we can help the host figure out what team owes what?

On a similar note, if you're playing, please register and help Jared out! We also need to assess the competition

The field is currently up to date based on the registrations I have received; several teams have expressed an intent to play, but have yet to register by emailing me at [email protected]. If you think you've already registered but your team isn't on the list, please try emailing me again and/or PMing me!

With less than one week until tournament day and there still being some teams that have expressed interest but have yet to register, we'd like to ask that you please sign up by Wednesday if you plan to attend. This will make planning much easier on our end. Thanks!

I like movies. Would other people be interested in playing BUMPY?

If I end up staffing like I might, I'd be interested in playing BUMPY.

Not to be a nuisance, but I had a couple of questions / comments:

1) Is the field still at 12 teams? If so, would the editors be able to provide a list of packets / authors? That way a schedule that works for an even number of teams can be determined.
2) Looks like there are only five teams bringing buzzers. I assume Princeton has a sixth, but if they don't we may want to make sure this all works out.

Thanks, and looking forward to Saturday!

I'll be staffing and can plan to bring a working buzzer set or two as backup, assuming Princeton would need me to do so.

OK - so unless I'm missing something, at least four teams at this site have questions in the tournament (Rutgers A, Maryland A, Jordan, and us) - so there's 12 packets that are presumably unseen by the whole field. If all 12 are used, then the worst case scenarios are 1) a play-in to a disadvantaged final involving three of these teams (requiring 3 separate packets) or 2) a four-way tie among these teams for first (also requiring 3 separate packets).

1) - [example] Maryland vs Rutgers for a disadvantaged final vs Brownstein et al. Play-in is (logically) on the Brownstein + Michigan B packet; (Rutgers / Maryland) wins, so the finals is on our packet and the (Maryland / Rutgers) packet. This scenario isn't an issue.
2) - [example] Brownstein et al plays Rutgers (on my team's packet), my team plays Maryland (on the Brownstein packet) - separate packets required for obvious reasons. Maryland and Rutgers win. This means Maryland has been exposed to Maryland A and Brownstein, and Rutgers has been exposed to my team's packet and Rutgers. In this scenario, no packets remain clear to any of the teams. Granted, this only happens if the two packets used for the play-in are end up being the two teams that lose the play-in, but the scenario is still possible.

In any case, a normal 12-team tournament (two brackets of 6, rebracket into 6-6 and round robin within those brackets, or rebracket into 4-4-4, with two round-robins within playoff brackets; or even just a full round robin) should be feasible, because those would use 10 and 11 packets, respectively. Personally, more quizbowl sounds fun to me, so I'd go for the 11-round setups (either full RR or 4-4-4 playoff split) but whatever's preferred.

Of course, this is all moot if a team drops or there's a 13th signup. And good to hear there's plenty of buzzers.

We're dropping our B-team, so things should be peachy unless another team signs up.

It sounds like there's enough interest in this, so I've contacted the writer. A few logistical points:
1. Is Princeton fine with this being mirrored?
2. Will we have access to a room with a projector?
3. Do the room reservations go late enough that we could hold this after the tournament?
4. The cost is $5 per person. Would somebody else be willing to collect this money and then pay the writer via paypal?

FWIW if Princeton has enough staff and there are team members who want to play, playing a house team would be solid - the 12-team schedule sounds nicer than the 11-team one as you get to have no byes (given that there are leftover packets).

We do have just enough staffers to field a house team and keep things even if we remain at an odd number, so we will do that if there are no more changes to the field.

Better yet, we have 2 sets of buzzers now!
alexdz wrote:I'll be staffing and can plan to bring a working buzzer set or two as backup, assuming Princeton would need me to do so.
It never hurts to have extra, in case something goes wrong. If it'll be burdensome for you, though, we should have enough plus one extra set if things remain as they are.

1. Absolutely!
2. I'm like 90% sure that the classrooms all have projectors (the larger meeting room definitely does), but I can check this out and get back to you by tomorrow.
3. Our reservation officially runs until 8 PM.
4. I'm willing to do this.

I guess so. I have the set, so assuming a projector and some interested people, neither of which seemed problematic, I don't see why it wouldn't happen.

Congratulations to Naveed Chowdhury, Jordan Brownstein, Victor Prieto, and Ophir Lifshitz for beating the QuizDB Promos in the first game of an advantaged final to win the tournament! Full stats can be found here.

I want to thank everyone who came out to play and staff, and especially Alex Dzurick for making the drive out from Philly to staff. Also, in a continued effort to improve tournaments hosted at Princeton, we welcome any and all feedback about our conduct of the tournament; feel free to post feedback in this thread or email me at [email protected].

I hope everyone had an enjoyable experience today!

I really enjoyed this tournament (the main one), so thanks a bunch to the Princeton team for hosting it. My only complaint was that I found some of the information for logistics lacking (field listing, date of tournament, etc.), but I also wasn't the person who registered so I'm sure there was more info I was missing that was being directly relayed by email. Either way, thanks a bunch for putting this on.

Also much thanks to Sam for coordinating BUMPY and to the Princeton staffers who stayed behind until 8 as we played it.

This is good to know! For our next tournament, I'll incorporate more of this information into the forum post so that it's available to those who aren't the primary contact for their team. I'm also curious to know whether the primary contacts felt that there was any missing logistics information, so that I can make sure that information gets conveyed for future tournaments.
