NAQT Collegiate Novice (CNS-177C) @ U. of Florida (09/22/18)

Post by Mahavishnu »

Acting on behalf of the University of Florida Quiz Bowl Team, I am proud to announce our mirror of NAQT's Collegiate Novice set on September 22nd, 2018! This tournament is a great occasion for players who are newer to the game to become acquainted with its intricacies, without being bombarded with tons of unfamiliar material right off the bat.

Question Set:

We'll be using NAQT's 2018 Collegiate Novice set. More information regarding the set can be found at https://www.naqt.com/college/collegiate ... eries.html

Eligibility:

The club officers are choosing not to institute any formal eligibility restrictions, with the hope that individual clubs self-police, and generally limit their players to those in either their first or second year of collegiate competition. On that note, we reserve full rights to deny, or reject any proposed teams that we feel are not conducive to the general purpose of hosting a novice tournament; that is, allowing novices to have a good time while playing individuals with skill levels similar to their own.

Tournament Site and Time

We are currently still waiting on room reservation officials to get back to us, but in all likelihood, the tournament will be held in Matherly Hall, on the northeast corner of campus. This post will be updated when our information changes. Our field cap is similarly pending. The tournament registration will begin at 8:30 A.M., and questions will begin being read at 9:00 A.M. on the dot.

EDIT: The tournament is confirmed to be in Matherly Hall. We should be the only ones there, so just follow the assorted quizbowlers to the main room, which should be on the second floor of the building.

Fees and Finances

Base Fee: $20 per player
Buzzer Discount: -$5 per complete, working buzzer system
Travel Discount: -$10 per 200 miles traveled one way
New Team Discount: -$10 if your school's quiz bowl organization wasn't active prior to the 2017-18 school year.

There is a minimum fee of $30 dollars per team.

Registration

To register, please email me, Tracy Mirkin, at [email protected], with the number of teams you plan to bring, the rosters of said teams, and how many buzzers you plan to bring.

Field

UF x 4
UCF x 2
Auburn x 2
USF x 1
Auburn at Montgomery x 1
TOTAL: 10

We look forward to seeing all of you at our first tournament of the 2018-19 school year! Please don't hesitate to contact me if you have any other questions! Thank you!

Hello everyone! This event occurred, and proceeded rather successfully, with only minor issues. We played a round robin of 9 rounds, followed by a single playoff game between teams that were paired in rankings after prelims (1st vs. 2nd, 3rd vs. 4th, etc.), after which final rankings were determined by record, and then PPG between the two teams that played in playoffs.

UCF A beat Auburn A in a gripping 360 - 345 one-game final to claim victory! In 3rd place was UF Windex, followed by the other three ridiculously balanced UF teams, who each ended with a 6-4 record. Not far behind were UCF B, the new and upcoming USF team, and Auburn B, who each managed to take some games for themselves. Everyone did excellently!

Nabeel Farooq was our top scorer of the day, followed by Jared Stinson of Auburn B and David Espinal of UCF A. The following people also all recieved book prizes.

4. Anthony Delgado - UF Pump
5. Zachary Beickman - Auburn A
6. Will Grossman - UF Windex
7. Khanh Nguyen - UF Yachty
8. Dylan Higbie - UCF B
9. Henry Hill - UF Windex
10. Zonshen Yu - UF Uzi Vert

The rest of the stats can be found here:

Each of these novice teams performed wonderfully. The rest of UF Quizbowl's leadership and myself would like to see all of you back in Gainesville for ACF Fall this coming November!
