NAQT Collegiate Novice @ Georgia Tech (9/21/19)

The Georgia Institute of Technology will host a collegiate quizbowl tournament on Saturday, September 21st, 2019. This tournament will use this year's NAQT Collegiate Novice question set. This is intended for players new to collegiate quizbowl.

As the new season starts, we want to have as welcoming an experience for novice college quiz bowlers as possible. Therefore , we wanted to lay some eligibility rules which are below. Please see to it that your teams follow these guidelines, or email me at [email protected] for special permission cases.

1.All ACF eligibility rules apply, except when they contradict the rules below.
2.This is a tournament for introducing collegiate novices to quizbowl. Consequently, no high school teams or players are eligible.
3. Anyone (who does not break Rules 1 or 2) who has never played quizbowl before is automatically eligible. Other academic competition does not count as quizbowl for this rule.
4. Players meeting one or more of the following criteria must apply to the tournament director for special permission to play:
If you have already completed your second year of college (calculated from time in college, not credits). Time in a post-secondary high school program does not count.
(i) If you have ever finished in the top 20 in scoring at PACE NSC or top 35 in scoring at NAQT HSNCT, or played on a team that finished in the top 16 at NSC or t-21 at HSNCT.
(ii) If you ever lead a team in scoring that made it beyond the first round of the HSNCT playoffs, or lead a team in scoring that made the top playoff bracket of NSC [the last two years, this has been the top 24 teams].
(iii) If you have ever scored at least 30 points per game at any college tournament.
(iv) If you have ever won any college tournament.
(v) If you have every scored 100 or more points per game at any high school tournament
5. Anyone who does not fall into any of the five categories listed in Rule 4 is automatically eligible to play.

Location and Time:
Games will take place in the Howey Physics building on the Georgia Tech campus. Please check in between 8:30 and 8:45; the opening meeting will start promptly at 9:00 and rounds will start immediately thereafter.

Fees and Payment:
$80 base fee
$5 discount for each capable staffer
$5 buzzer discount
$5 travel discount for every 200 miles between your school and the Georgia Institute of Technology, as per Google Maps

Please bring payment on the day of the tournament in the form of cash or a check made out to the "Georgia Tech Academic Quizbowl Team". If we deem that your staffer is not capable or your buzzers are not working, you will not receive a discount.

This tournament happened this past Saturday! Congrats to South Carolina for winning the tournament by clearing the field! Congrats also go to Georgia Tech A for their second place finish. Good job to all the teams who came! A big thank you also for all the staffers who volunteered their time to make this tournament a success :)
