2019 ACF Fall at Ohio State (11/2/19)

Post by InspectorNorse »

I am pleased to announce that the Great Lakes site of 2019 ACF Fall will be held at Ohio State on Saturday, November 2, 2019. The tournament will take place at Enarson Classroom Building, room number and check-in/starting time TBA. I will be the tournament director. Please direct any questions about this site to [email protected].

Eligibility
In general, teams where players are all attending the same school and all taking at least one class for credit during the 2019-2020 school year are eligible to play 2019 ACF Fall. ACF’s full eligibility rules are available here. Questions about eligibility should be directed to [email protected].

Rules
This tournament will follow ACF’s official gameplay rules.

Registration
Registration for this event has two steps.
First, please write to [email protected] with your team name, the number of buzzers and staffers with laptops you will be bringing, and whether you traveled more than 200 miles one-way.
Second, Fill out the central 2019 ACF Fall registration form with all relevant information. The form is here: https://forms.gle/jeavKYCaCvGJaQNq5. The field for each site can be found here.

Fees
Base fee: $150
New to quizbowl discount: –$100
Shorthanded discount (1-2 players): –$75
Buzzers: –$10 per functional system
Staffers: –$15 per staffer with functional laptop
Travel: –$10 per 200 miles traveled one-way
The "new to quizbowl" discount is intended for schools that did not send a team to any regular collegiate academic tournament (exclusively Novice tournaments do not count) since September 2018, and have no one on the team(s) claiming this discount who played those tournaments for another school.

Packet Discounts/Penalties
Any team with at least two people on it who played a regular, collegiate, academic quizbowl tournament (either as a college student or as a high school student) prior to September 1, 2018, is required to submit a half-packet, unless it is a high school team attending a high-school-only mirror. If you are unsure whether your team is required to submit a half-packet, please email ACF at [email protected].

The submission schedule is as follows (your submission must be sent to [email protected] by 11:59 PM PDT):
September 7: –$30
September 21: –$15 (–$30 if optional)
October 5: no penalty (–$15 if optional)

Packets submitted later than October 20 will receive an additional penalty of +$10 per day starting on October 21.

High School Teams

Hey all, just a reminder to please register for this tournament if you haven’t already. The field is filling up, and we want to make sure everyone who wants to play can. Also, if you have registered to play, but have not emailed me for an invoice, please do so as soon as possible.

Field Update
Ohio State (1/2/many)
Miami (3/1/1)
Wright State (1/0/0)
Wayne State (1/0/0)
Michigan (4/3/0)
Carnegie Mellon (3/3/2)
Kenyon (2/1/1)
Kentucky (2/2/0)
West Virginia (1/1/1)
Case Western (2/1/1)
Louisville (1/3/0)

Logistics

Payment
If you need an invoice or a W-9, please contact me at [email protected] ASAP. If I don’t hear from you otherwise, we will be expecting payment Saturday morning.

Location/Time
Registration will begin at 8:15 in Enarson Classroom Building, room 226 (2009 Millikin Road). Our morning meeting is scheduled for 8:45 with games starting at 9:00. All games will be in Enarson. If you are running late, please contact me at 614-800-2983

Schedule
We will play 7 rounds of prelims (3 brackets of 7 with byes for 6 games in 7 rounds), followed by lunch and 4 playoff rounds, followed by 1-2 finals as needed.

Parking
Your best bet for parking will be the Tuttle Garage, located at 2050 Tuttle Park Pl. This garage is right next to Enarson and costs about $12 for the day. While there is some free street parking around campus, it is scarce and gets taken up quick, so I would not recommend pursuing this.

Lunch
Your best bet for lunch will be any of the restaurants on High Street, which is about a 10 minute walk east of Enarson. There are plenty of quick options there, fast food and otherwise.

Contact
I can be reached at [email protected], or 614-800-2983. I would ask that you use my email prior to the tournament and my phone on the day of.

If you have any questions that were not covered above, please let me know. Otherwise, have a happy Halloween, and OSU looks forward to seeing you all on Saturday.

Uh, what sort of playoff schedule / bracket split exactly will result in six playoff rounds?

Edit: To be more specific, breaking brackets 3/2/2 would require *seven* playoff rounds for the top bracket -- 9 teams playing 6 games each is 27 games, more than the 24 that would be possible in six rounds (because only an even number of teams can play in any given round), and I fail to see any other sort of bracketing that would require more than five playoff rounds.

*4 + 1-2 finals as needed. That’s my mistake, apologies for the confusion.

Congratulations to OSU A on taking home the ACF Fall Great Lakes title in a hard-fought game against CMU A, and to Nour Hijazi of Wright State for leading the scoring field.

A sincere thanks to all our staffers for expertly handing some early morning confusion and getting the tournament done in good time, and to all the teams that came for making this tournament possible at all. Stats are uploaded and available here: https://hsquizbowl.org/db/tournaments/5971/
