2020 New York SCT at Cornell (February 8, 2020)

Post by CYPRAS »

On behalf of the quiz bowl club at Cornell, CYPRAS is pleased to announce that the 2020 New York Sectional Championship Tournament will be held February 8, 2020 on the campus of Cornell University in Ithaca, NY. More details will follow about the exact building(s) and rooms being used to hold the tournament. Scott Kroner will act as tournament director with Kristin Cameron as deputy director.

This tournament is expected to feature two divisions, which will be played with appropriate SCT question sets. Per NAQT rules, games will be untimed with halves of 11 toss-ups.

Fees:
Base fees: $145 for the first team from a school; $120 for each additional team.

Discounts:
$10 discount per working buzzer system (must accommodate at least eight players) Limit 2 per school.
$40 discount for an experienced moderator (additional moderators may generate additional discounts at the tournament director's discretion)
$10 discount per dedicated scorekeeper (a non-participant)
$5 discount per scorekeeper (a participating player)
$20 discount (per team) for schools new to quiz bowl (no SCT experience in 2018 or 2019)
$40 discount (per team) for schools with no previous SCT history (within 7 years)
$10 discount (per team) for schools bringing more that what they brought to an SCT last year. For instance, if you brought two teams to an SCT last year, a third team would get the 'increased participation' discount. So would a fourth, fifth, etc. Not applicable to first time schools.
$15 discount for super early registration (due by the end of the day on Jan 20)
$10 discount for very early registration (due by the end of the day on Jan. 27)
$5 discount for early registration (due by the end of the day on Feb.3)

Minimum fee: $65

Schools may pay by cash or check at the door on February 8. Schools may also, free of charge, choose to be billed after the tournament. Post-tournament invoicing options can include checks or credit card payments. Teams will have the option of adding lunch into the tournament charges. We are also planning on tournament t-shirts. Pre-orders cost $7 ($8 for XXL or larger) Late and on-site orders will be $10 or $11. Likewise, the cost of the t-shirts may be folded in with other charges on any tournament invoice.

How to register: This tournament will use NAQT's online registration system. Register here: https://www.naqt.com/registration/regis ... &type=TEAM

Do you anticipate needing staff? I might be able to help out if I know fairly well beforehand.

With special recognition to the Cornell Quiz Bowl Club for serving as host and providing Brendan and Yu as moderators, a grateful thank you to the external staffers who helped make the tournament a success: Kendall Bazinet, Kristin Cameron, Bethany Cates, Najia Khaled, Tyler Lucero, Tim Murphy, Jay O'Brien, and Adam Swift.
Thanks to all the teams that attended despite having to navigate some less-than-ideal upstate NY weather, leading to a delayed start. With lots of cooperation, we actually made up time over the course of the day.

Cornell's A and B teams swept the DI and DII with 10-0 and 9-1 records respectively.
Final records/stats are on NAQT's site at: www.naqt.com/stats/tournament/standings ... t_id=11245

Teams can request copies of the team photos, and schools/individuals can still order tournament t-shirts (although some sizes may be limited).

And finally, thanks to all the players who participated. We hope you had a great time.
