Southeastern @ Berry College -- 11/15/08

Post by BerryCollegeBowl »

The Berry College College Bowl Team would like to announce that its annual Southeastern/(Not so) Early Bird tournament will be held on our beautiful Mount Berry, GA campus on November 15, 2008.

This is a preliminary announcement. Other details will be released in the next few months. The tournament will be going back to team packet submission instead of being house written as been the trend in the past few years. Guidelines will be forthcoming.

Now in it's 4th decade, the Southeastern is the longest running annual tournament in the nation. Please join us and keep the tradition alive!! We look forward to hearing from you.

If you have any questions or would like to reserve a spot, please e-mail us @ [email protected] or [email protected].

Have a nice summer!!

Hey this sounds pretty cool. Are you guys planning on having a Northern or New England mirror?

As of right now, there are no plans to mirror the Southeastern. That may change in the next few months. When and if it does, we'll let you know. Thanks for asking!

Can you make the packets from previous editions of the tournament online to either the Stanford Archive or the Collegiate Quizbowl Packet Archive? People might be more interested in this tournament if they knew what to expect.

This is just a quick reminder that the Berry College College Bowl team will be hosting it's annual Southeastern/Early Bird Invitational on November 15, 2008.

We are returning to packet submission this year and will be posting our packet requirements and fee schedule in the very near future.

Interested teams can contact our coach, Dr, Wade Carpenter, @ [email protected]. We look forward to hearing from you!!

Hello all --

As promised here are some of the details for the upcoming Southeastern/Early Bird @ Berry College, the longest running annual Collegiate Academic Bowl tournament in the country. The tournament is open to 2 and 4 year institutions. While we would prefer to remain undergrad/JC only, we will entertain a Graduate division if the demand is sufficient to warrant it.

The details are as follows:

Base Fee: $100 (-$10 per additional team - max 3)
Buzzer: -$5 per system. At least partially functional, please.
Distance Discount (>200 miles) -- $20
If full packet is received by 10/1: -$20
If full packet is received by 10/15: -$10
No packet discount after midnight 11/1/08
Teams who wish to compete sans packet: +$40. Must be arranged prior to 11/1
Minimum Fee: $60

PACKET GUIDELINES (Credit Charlie Steinhice) :

DIFFICULTY:
-- Please keep the level of difficulty on par with NAQT Div II (sectionals) questions as this
will primarily be a 2-4 year school competition.

FORMAT:
-- Please arrange questions separately by category. If you want to
make life easier for us, separate tossups and bonuses, and use the order
of categories below.
-- Please e-mail the packet as either an MS Word or RTF file, with
the essential parts of the answer in bold and underlined.
-- Make sure the words "for ten points" or abbreviation "FTP" appear
in each tossup shortly before the final clue.
-- Please insert the word "Answer:" followed by a single tab before
each answer.
-- Ideally, titles of books, plays, periodicals, films, TV series,
and works of art should be italicized, while titles of songs, short
stories, and TV series episodes should be placed in quotes. But we're
not going to penalize you if you don't.

DISTRIBUTION: For a full packet, we ask for 25 tossups and 25 bonuses
per packet, distributed as follows.

A) Literature: 5 tossups and 5 bonuses -- at least 2 20th century, at
least 2 pre- 20th century; at least 2 U.S./Canadian, at least 2 non-
U.S./Canadian
B) Sciences (including math): 5/5 -- at least 1 each of biology,
physics, and chemistry. If you have a second question from any of
these categories, try to make them from a different subcategory (e.g.
two physics bonuses would be OK, but two on thermodynamics would be
overkill.)
C) History: 5/5 -- at least 2 20th/21st century, at least 2 pre-20th
c.; at least 2 U.S./Canadian, at least 2 non-U.S./Canadian
D) Philosophy/religion/myth: 2/2 -- prefer no more than 1/1 of each
E) Fine arts: 2/2 -- no more than 1/1 each on visual arts and
classical music
F) Social sciences, including geography: 2/2
G) Popular culture: minimum 1/1, maximum 2/2. (While it's an academic
tournament, all knowledge is power.)

The remaining questions may include:
* General knowledge/interdisciplinary questions -- these are
especially helpful as spare tossups, since they make good Tossup
21's.
* Current events other than pop culture
* Additional questions from any of the above categories (no more than
one extra per category). Since it seems like we get more duplication
on sciences, a 6th science question is especially welcomed.

Final deadline for packets is midnight 11/8/08.
If you express interest in coming and we do not receive a packet from your team by the final deadline we will assume that your team has withdrawn unless other arrangements have been made.

If you have any other questions or would like to reserve a spot in the field, please contact our coach, Dr. Wade Carpenter, @ [email protected]

We look forward to hearing from you!!

We would love to be able to do this, but we have to respect wishes of our question writers. For the past 6 years the questions for the Southeastern have been written by two Berry graduates, Eric Emmett and Chris Silvers. Eric and Chris have asked us not to release their questions to the general public. They are trying to build up a significant database of material, ala what Don Windham and Carol Guthrie did in the 80s and 90s.

As for older material, all we have are paper copies of questions. We do not have the manpower or the time to scan them back into the proper format for viewing. It is, unfortunately, that simple.

We would love for all of you to have access to our questions. It just isn't feasible at the moment. However, the Southeastern is the longest running annual tournament in the nation for a reason. It kept the game alive when CBI was on life support. For most teams in the South, it was the only tournament for a good portion of the 1970's.

The level of material and competition is consistently excellent, and we work very hard to maintain that. We hope that this year's edition will enhance our reputation.

We look forward to seeing some of you in November!!

Oh.
Why don't those guys who probably aren't going to get many hits on their database just forward the files to one of the more popular databases on this site? It might would draw more people in to your tournament, assuming that they are good questions. I was thinking about attending when I saw this thread (not terribly far away), but I am not willing to travel to a tournament where I would just be disappointed. Again, the whole question release thing might have made me think otherwise. I, along with about anyone really, would have to know something about it instead of it being so old.

You do however need to keep in mind that we are returning to packet submission this year. So even if we could post the questions it may or may not be representative of the level of questions that we'll have this year. We'd just like to point that out In case you missed it in the earlier post.

We're not kidding ourselves. Not being able to post the questions from the past few years really hurt us, but it simply isn't our call. When (or if) we get permission to do so we'll be more than happy to post them for everybody.

The Southeastern has been around this long for a reason. Teams enjoy coming to the tournament. We'd love to have you attend. A good time will be had by all. If you still feel the same way, then that's cool. We understand where you're coming from, and we hope to see you out on the circuit.
