MO Trash: The Rob Pilatus Memorial Tournament - 10.19.08

by theattachment
As a corollary to Minnesota Open, I will be heading the Rob Pilatus Memorial Tournament on Sunday, October 19th. It will run during the day with JECHT running afterward.

Rob Pilatus will be a 10 round tournament with an ACF-style final. The cost will be $55 for a three-person team or $65 for a four-person team. Hopefully this will be mirrored at the other sites; see them for pricing details.

The difficulty level will be around that of MO, with good, tough questions on somewhat accessible answers. Think around the level of CO trash. The distribution is about 3/4ths the big four and 1/4th minor stuff, including about 2/2 video games and 0/1 quizbowlers in drag.

Anyone interested in playing or staffing this tournament should e-mail me at theattachment@OMGDON'TSPAMMEgmail.com. Also, if you aren't going to MO or its mirrors and are interested in making a couple bucks and won't be playing, talk to me about freelancing some questions. Note that people who freelance will probably not be playing in the tournament itself.

FURTHER EDITING:

Here's the distribution for the tournament for people that have inquired:

3/3 of each of the Big Four (Movies, Music, TV, and Sports)
1/1 of extra Big Four questions
7/7 of everything else (2/1 or 1/2 video games, some comics, food [including, if I'm feeling up to it, 1/1 coffee drinks EVERY PACKET], some meta)
2/0 tiebreakers

The following teams have already expressed interest or signed up:
Roper, Gehring, Davis, Taylor
Hart, Carson, Meade, Sorice
Marnold plus people
Tia and the TRASHmen minus Tia
Maryland
Spoiler Alert??: Nathan Bragg, Jack Brounstein, Carissa Bragg
Interior Crocodile Alligator: Matt Weiner, Charlie Dees, Mike Bentley and Evan Nagler
Minnesota house team whose name I forgot
Grinnell x2

Free agents thus far include:
Christian Carter?
Rom Masrour
Micah Hodosh
Eric Gruber and Drew Markson (the inseparable pair)
Matt Lafer

Staffers include:
Bernadette Spencer
Auroni Gupta
Gautam Kandlikar

ANOTHER EDIT: Teams interested in playing have until October 17 (during the Friday pick-up basketball game) to register and can pay up on the day of the tournament. I would definitely prefer to know beforehand so I can make a schedule earlier.

To clarify, unless someone with great qualifications is willing to step up, Colin O'Donnell will be the editor in charge of this tournament. The four other writers who are committed to helping out so far have a lot of experience writing and editing trash tournaments, but for various reasons, are unable to commit to editing. Colin is a capable writer and organizer with very good knowledge of the subject matter, and most importantly, I know he is very enthusiastic and committed to writing a good tournament. Colin's main responsibility is to coordinate the writing of this tournament and to make sure that everyone stays on schedule.

I'm going to leave this tournament to the writers now (to discuss distribution, who will write what, etc.).

okay, I have no intention on playing this because I'm awful at trash, but I will certainly staff and maybe even write if there's a need for it.

I, and probably a team or two of other Illinois people, will almost certainly play this, unless travel plans render that impossible.

I will play this, probably with some other Chicago people though as it gets closer I may throw myself into a free agent pool.

Oh yeah, the hallmark of most good trash tournaments is the increased amount of the distribution not tied to "big four". Tournaments like the first Chris McCray and CO's Karlfeldt had a much more open distribution, and Karlfeldt's many and varied common link tossups were, for the most part, an excellent decision.

I agree with this very much. Food, common link, meta. This stuff is great.

I agree as well. As someone who has no knowledge whatsoever of sports, this is like a second chance.

Expect more tossups on the finer aspects of Daler Mehndi music videos and bonuses on movies of Shah Rukh Khan in this tournament.

Colin, it's great that you're taking this on.

My team will certainly be playing; I'll send you an email to confirm.

I'm also willing to help with logistics and maybe donate some (appropriately trashy) prizes.

Hey Arnav, will Stanford be coming to MO, and if so, would you be interested in reuniting our CO trash team?

I don't think so, unless we get a sudden windfall of infinity dollars from an anonymous Swiss bank. We might mirror it, though, once we figure out what our Fall schedule is going to look like.

Even if Stanford did come, I'll be out of the country.

But the next time there's a trash tournament, I'd love to bring back Flags are Flying in Town and Port.

Hey all -

As of right now I only have one team signed up, though I know that there is more than sufficient interest to run this. If you are planning on playing this, please e-mail me at theattachment AT gmail DOT com so I can plan out a format. I also haven't heard from any of the mirror sites for whether or not there's interest in running it out there. If you plan to mirror MO, I'd like to get in touch with you (either way) for whether or not you plan to run this.

Now that my Saturday Minnesota Open team is falling into place, I am looking for trash teammates, for I plan to drive from Chicago to the Twin Cities on the Friday and back on the Monday. If Mike Bentley still needs a spot despite Chris Ray's team intentions, Mike could be on my team, and he could show me how to play his podcasts, especially the film final. I may easily be reached at [email protected]

Congratulations to the former Minardi team on its first Formula One win,

No real new updates to report. However, if you are out on the East Coast and want to play this, you are as of yet out of luck. There currently aren't plans to mirror it at MIT. If you are interested, either contact Grace to tell MIT that there's interest or get a hold of me to suggest other tournaments (preferably soon after MO) that would benefit from MO Trash.

Also, look out for info on the West Coast mirror at Stanford.

Field updated. Teams that are at least interested are implored to let me know of your interest. I need to get an idea for schedules and how many more staffers are needed (you really don't want my dad to read, though he so will if you don't volunteer).

Also, writers, keep an eye on your e-mails.

I would be delighted to take that last slot on Maryland's team. I have never been teammates with Chris Ray or Jeremy Eaton (should he be on their team). I was teamed with Jonathan Magin (should he also be on their team) at last autumn's lit doubles and experimental doubles/triples at UIUC. I understand that Mike Bentley will be on another team, though. To be frank, I am quite bad with current pop music. While my home shows how I practically own film history and have met auto racing history, I am also comfortable with TV history plus Olympic, baseball, and football history.

General update with times and stuff:

Barring some different times from the University, we can get into Coffman at 10 at the earliest. Therefore, registration and energy boosting will occur at Espresso Expose at the corner of Washington and Harvard (take Washington away from the bridge and it's the first coffee shop, the one on the street corner) between 9:15 and 9:55. It's looking like we'll do either a full round robin with anywhere between seven and nine matches (if we have more than 10 teams, this'll have to change) with an advantaged final at the end and possible scrimmages to burn packets if not running long. To fit in JECHT I'd hope to be done by 4:00.

Anyone that is still interested in playing (free agent or full team) should e-mail me. If there's enough to field a free agent team, hope and pray you guys match; otherwise, I'll add you to the teams that have three players. Moderators are still somewhat sparing, so if you're around and on the fence to play, please consider reading.

Registration will close at the end of MO basketball; I'll also take e-mails until 9 p.m. Payment can happen at any time until the start of the tournament (at 9:56, I will shake you upside down by the ankles and get whatever spare change you have, then still charge you full price  ).

I am bringing several classic movie DVDs to contribute to the prizes for the top players and/or team. I will still show up Sunday morning, hoping to secure any team's vacancy. I can be reached this weekend at (773) 858 - 1562.

So not only did someone read the wrong round, the stats dude didn't show, as did one team that was promised to be here, leading to a pair of half teams to fill out a bracket that now includes Ryan Westbrook.

Prepare for a meta tossup on how much this thing failed.

Colin is overstating the logistical issues which plagued the event. Yes, there were problems, but the actual game-playing parts for the most part were OK.

8 rounds were played. The 12-team field was split in two brackets of six for an initial round robin. Then the teams were placed into 3 brackets of 4 based on record, for a second round robin after lunch. I'm not sure who ended up on top.

The Nathan Bragg / Jack Brounstein team came out on top of the Matt Weiner team in a finals match that went down to the last question.

Oh, by the way, my apologies for being so surly yesterday. The combined forces of not getting much sleep, starting the tournament late, and trying to get in as many rounds of JECHT as possible before I had to catch my flight back (which ended up being late anyways) didn't make for a very positive demeanor.
