Since the other Mizzou Open side events are coming out of the woodwork, I figure I should too.

EuroFest is tournament where all the questions are about European history. Its format will probably be 10 packets of 16/16. The questions will be written by myself and noted media darling Dallas Simons, though other writers may be added later. The event will be held at Mizzou Open weekend, currently scheduled for June 6.

The tournament will be significantly more accessible than my past history tournaments, and the tossups will be shorter on average.

Since I will almost certainly not be at Mizzou Open, I would like somebody to volunteer to TD. Also, since it now seems that Mizzou Open will not be mirrored, I would like to see the tournament mirrored in other parts of the country if possible (not necessarily on the same weekend).

I'll play contingent on me attending this tournament.

I don't have much interest playing a tournament entirely composed of European history, but I plan to be at Missouri Open. I can direct this on site, if you like.

I love European history. If I am there, I will definitely play.

Also, just to clarify - I have nothing against a general mirror of Mizzou Open on either coast, so I'm not exactly sure that what Bruce posted is right.

I am happy to announce that Phil Graves and Jeff Hoppes have been added to the writing team for EuroFest.

Yeah, the Maryland mirror will be running every event available.

Assuming that I will fly to DC and drive to UMCP, I would definitely play in these EuroFest doubles/triples/quadruples on that Saturday night, for I also love to study Western Civilization.

Yeah, this event is still happening (at Mizzou at least, I haven't heard from UMD).

We'll run all the side events Missouri Open runs (which, at the moment, is pretty much just this one, I think). So, yeah, it's happening at Maryland.

This is also happening in San Diego, right?

Just a warning: I am strongly considering changing the format to make it packets of 20/0, rather than packets of 16/16. I am not looking forward to writing, say, 20 bonuses on French history that have no repeats with my already-written 20 tossups on French history and still keeping everything accessible.

The tournament would still be 10 packets regardless of what format I settle on.

I actually prefer 20/0 to 16/16, although I would think that the time tradeoff would be comparable to at least switching to like 24/0. I like forward to the event regardless.

Yeah I think these tournaments end up being better when they're tossup only.

At this time, I can confirm that EuroFest will stick to the 16/16 format. The distribution will be as follows:

2/2 Britain
2/2 France
2/2 German Speaking World (defined as Germany, Austria, and Switzerland)
1/1 Iberian Peninsula
1/1 Italy
1/1 Scandinavia + Low Countries
1/1 Eastern Europe (defined as Baltic States, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, and Yugoslavia)
1/1 Russia (defined as former USSR)
1/1 Byzantium + Post Classical Greece + Albania
1/1 Classical Greece
1/1 Classical Rome
1/1 European Culture (books, thought, fine arts)
1/1 Grab Bag (could be anything!)

The distribution refers only to geographic scope; thus, when I say that the 1/1 Russia distribution is defined as "former USSR", this does not mean that questions will be restricted to Soviet-era history, but that any question about the history of a territory that was part of the USSR will fall under the Russia distribution. Within each category, I have of course made an effort to create a balance as to time and type of question.

The tournament's done. I will randomize the set and then send it to representatives of each of the three sites.

As with Harvard International, I have written 1 (one) question for this. See if you can spot it.

Hey, everyone,

We ran this tournament yesterday following the completion of Mizzou Open. At first, four people wanted to play, so we ran a round robin among Matt Weiner, Mike Sorice, Trevor Davis, and Gautam Kandlikar. That went as:

1 - Matt Weiner (3-0)
2 - Trevor Davis (2-1)
3 - Mike Sorice (1-2)
4 - Gautam Kandlikar (0-3)

Then we decided that the best thing to do would be to play the rest of the packets in a free for all singles format, tossups only. Charlie Dees and James Sanner joined in. That worked out like this:

1: Matt Weiner (four hundred and some)
2: Trevor Davis (170)
3: Mike Sorice (165)
4: Charlie Dees
5: Gautam Kandlikar
6: James Sanner

To be honest, I can't remember between Gautam and Charlie who came out ahead, but I believe that that's correct. Everyone seemed to really enjoy the packets, and I think everyone had a good time. Thanks to Bruce et al for providing a good set, to everyone who helped me write questions for my slice of the distribution, and to everyone who played.

For clarity's sake, I only played for 1/20th of a game, and I only got that one tossup right. Not 2 and 1 neg.
