ACF Regionals Northeast (Harvard) (2/28/09)
Harvard is pleased to announce that we will be hosting ACF Regionals on Saturday, February 28th, 2009. Please register by contacting me via email ([email protected]). Posting here does not constitute registration, though feel free to do it anyway; it can only encourage more people to come. And we'd like a good, strong field here. We'll certainly be providing a house team for scheduling/bracketing/whatever reasons. At the moment, it looks like Dallas Simons will be tournament director.
The tournament will take place in Sever Hall, pending room reservations going through.
Fees
Base fee: $120 per team
Buzzer systems: -$5 each
Staffers: -$10 each
Laptop: -$5 each (max 1 per team)
Travel: -$10 for every 200 miles traveled (one-way)
International: -$20
Teams new to ACF: -$25
Teams new to quizbowl: -$75
High school teams: -$50
Packets
All experienced teams are required to submit packets for ACF Regionals. For details regarding who is required to submit a packet and what your packet should look like, please consult the official ACF Packet Submission Guidelines (http://www.acf-quizbowl.com/documents/packetsub.php). There will be discounts and penalties for timely and untimely submissions; they are detailed in the guide and summarized below:
* Packet submitted by:
* Jan. 4: -$50
* Jan. 18: -$25 (-$50 for optional packets)
* Feb. 1: No penalty (-$25 for optional packets)
* Feb. 8: +$25
* Feb. 15: +$50
If you do not make special arrangements with the editors and do not submit a packet by Feb. 15, you will not be allowed to play. There will be no exceptions to this rule. Also, please take special note of the formatting rules for packet submission. Read this carefully: if your packet violates the formatting guidelines, it will be sent right back to you.
Difficulty
ACF Regionals is intended as a regular-difficulty event. Please look at ACF Regionals 2008 as an example of the target difficulty of this tournament. If you are unsure whether a particular answer choice is appropriate for this tournament, contact the editors and they will let you know. In general, you should strive to adhere to the question writing practices outlined in the Guide linked to above.

Hey, kids. WIth one week to go, I'd love to get a closer approximation of how many teams are attending so that I can understand how to run this thing, particularly because we need three more buzzers.

Re: ACF Regionals Northeast (Harvard) (2/28/09)
Since 13 teams looks like an exceedingly likely total, yes. Twelve teams would be terrible since you can't run a round robin OR two brackets that way, so we'd likely conjure up an additional house team to avoid that.
If somehow we end up with fourteen teams, we'll do 7/7, 7/7, finals.

Hey, we're not actually, like, well off for buzzers or anything, so teams that I know have buzzers: please, please, please bring them. Brown has buzzers. So does... Brandeis, maybe? I bet RPI does. Does RPI want to pay very much for this tournament? Surely not!

Hey, Brandeis has some buzzers, which is good; it looks like we may be pretty much off the hook there. Where we're certainly not off the hook is staff. We currently have a total of four moderators in the morning and five in the afternoon, counting Eric. If you have someone to drag along, I will do anything for a moderator. Since it looks inevitable that we will have an eleven round round robin in the morning, we may have to beg you to moderate on your bye; this gives us more than enough moderators in every case except Hunter College, since Yetman has no friends (though in that case, we do have just enough--I'd just rather have one more, to keep the tournament running quickly).
Also, Brian Young will be serving as tournament director, packets to [email protected].

I got the impression from Josh Sokol that Swarthmore might be in need of some extra ACF Regs moderators (which would make sense, given their field size). I don't need to read anywhere and hadn't volunteered myself precisely because I have boring, practical things I should do with my Saturday instead. I hadn't seen any moderator pleas on the Swarthmore thread (I do keep an eye on tournaments in the area, for the most part).Inter et Inter wrote:I got the impression from Josh Sokol that Swarthmore might be in need of some extra ACF Regs moderators (which would make sense, given their field size). Re: ACF Regionals Northeast (Harvard) (2/28/09)
This is actually a perfect time to be asking that; I was just going to be emailing that out. So we're going to open up registration at 8:30, though if you come earlier you'll probably see at least one of us and we'll be glad to take your money from you. Please, please try to get here as close to 8:30 as possible; I understand that because of the vagaries of public transportation / inability to find buildings, as close as possible may end up being not very close at all. That's fine, whatever, but we do very much want to start close to 9:00am, and if everyone is there we will surely start earlier.
We'll open up the day with a bracing eleven round, eleven team round robin. Lunch will probably be placed after round six or seven, preferably seven, but if we don't get through many rounds in the morning it'll come at a reasonable time, certainly not too late in the afternoon. After the round robin, we'll have tiebreakers if necessary (just for placement into playoff brackets) and then we'll break into brackets of 4/4/3. (If a scab team or whatever wants to form, it'd be welcome to take a 12 seed so that the lower bracket can get some games.
Then there will be ACF-format finals. Yeah, that's pretty much it.
EDIT: Right, other things. Brian Young will be serving as tournament director during the day, because Dallas and l will be playing. Packets will of be emailed to him, too, of course (to [email protected], if you are reading this early tomorrow morning and feel like emailing him packets). But if you need to contact anyone during the day, you can call me and I'll help you: 412 - 759 - 8359.
DOUBLE EDIT: If you need a parking pass, I just figured out how to work the godawful system. Tell me!

But if you need to contact anyone during the day, you can call me and I'll help you: 412 - 759 - 8359.
DOUBLE EDIT: If you need a parking pass, I just figured out how to work the godawful system. Tell me!

Re: ACF Regionals Northeast (Harvard) (2/28/09)
Tournament update: Prelims have just ended (well after 6 pm, I'm sorry to report), and we've rebracketed into 4-4-3 for 3 more rounds of playoffs. Brown was 10-0 for the prelims, and the Harvard house team went 9-1; rounding out the top bracket were MIT A and Dartmouth A.
Being who I am, I'm statting in Taft (thanks, Evan!) and SQBS; I'll post SQBS stats tonight once everything's in, but "live" Taft stats can be found at http://www.taftqb.com/t/acfregsnortheas ... /standings.

More information: three total games between Brown and Harvard were determined by one question (I don't have the score), 15, and 25 points.

Re: ACF Regionals Northeast (Harvard) (2/28/09)
Apologies for the delay. Stats are (have been) up at Taft, and SQBS output can now be found on the Harvard team website:
Prelims
Playoffs (including finals)
Combined
The only discrepancy that I'm aware of between the Taft and SQBS stats is due to the elsewhere-mentioned RPI-Yetman confusion in round 2, where the teams finished 5 points apart but the moderator had inadvertently skipped a question. I gave the teams a 20th tossup but no bonus, so the SQBS output (where the game is recorded as 19 tossups heard plus 1 tiebreaker) better represents RPI's true bonus conversion.
Thanks again to all the teams for coming and for their forbearance (and I should note that the finals didn't end until 9:30 but to my knowledge, every team, even in the bottom bracket, stayed for all 14 rounds). Big thanks to the moderators, particularly Vu from Brandeis and Eric M, and to the aforementioned bottom bracket for being good enough to moderate for one another when Harvard moderators had to leave.
I'd be very glad to hear any comments or criticism about how the tourney itself was run (feel free even to remind me that extended lunches are a luxury) -- e-mail me at byoungATfas.harvard.edu, or say something in the thread and Watkins will read it.

I meant to post this earlier; at the tournament I recorded a few games with a webcam, but unfortunately all but one of them lack sound. I've figured out how to record things properly with sound now so probably the next tournament I go to will have games recorded with sound, but here you can find a video of Brown vs. Hunter College.
