All experienced teams are required to submit packets for ACF Regionals. For details regarding who is required to submit a packet and what your packet should look like, please consult the official ACF Packet Submission Guidelines (http://www.acf-quizbowl.com/documents/packetsub.php). There will be discounts and penalties for timely and untimely submissions; they are detailed in the guide and summarized below:

If you do not make special arrangements with the editors and do not submit a packet by Feb. 15, you will not be allowed to play. There will be no exceptions to this rule. Also, please take special note of the formatting rules for packet submission. Read this carefully: if your packet violates the formatting guidelines, it will be sent right back to you.
Difficulty

If you are unsure whether a particular answer choice is appropriate for this tournament, contact the editors and they will let you know. In general, you should strive to adhere to the question writing practices outlined in the Guide linked to above.

I haven't received a response to my email, so, as of now, Swarthmore is not hosting GARBAGE (though they are welcome to host if they would like; I just need to know soon).

Re: ACF Regionals Mid-Atlantic at Swarthmore (2/28/09)
Yes, this housing will be free and we will try to accommodate everyone who wants to stay in an effort to encourage attendance of both tournaments. In the past, Swarthmore debate has successfully found student hosts by promising the hosts admittance to a high quality, closed party. Still, if we run out of hosts, the teams last to request housing will have to be left out.
I don't know Feldman, but he is welcome to come play in our tournaments and stay over. This party's classiness is too much to rest on one individual.

Brandeis tells me they're coming to Harvard, though Feldman is free to defect since we may be providing basketball as an after-event instead of (I suppose possibly in addition to, though drunk basketball is a poor idea and I'm not organizing either way) alcohol.Hilarius Bookbinder wrote:I highly doubt that Brandeis would go to Swarthmore instead of Harvard, though clearly I no longer speak for the club.DumbJaques wrote:So, are you saying you'll put us up for free? Yo no need to badmouth drunk basketball; it is actually pretty damn fun and only causes lightweights to throw up, the only problem is it sobers you up really quick.everyday847 wrote:Brandeis tells me they're coming to Harvard, though Feldman is free to defect since we may be providing basketball as an after-event instead of (I suppose possibly in addition to, though drunk basketball is a poor idea and I'm not organizing either way) alcohol.Hilarius Bookbinder wrote:I highly doubt that Brandeis would go to Swarthmore instead of Harvard, though clearly I no longer speak for the club.DumbJaques wrote:So, are you saying you'll put us up for free? Just wondering if Science Non-Strosity will be mirrored since most people seem to want to play it as a side event if possible. Sometime Sunday (before trash for example) would be preferable from my point of view if it ends up happening. Also, I'll be able to get a final count of teams for you early next week.

Well, we sure as hell aren't doing so from 6-8 Sunday morning, but I think "Maryland" is happy to take charge of doing this (Jeff Amoros will probably be organizing). I would presume it would run Saturday evening, assuming this is cool with Swarthmore folks.Just wondering if Science Non-Strosity will be mirrored since most people seem to want to play it as a side event if possible. Sorry for the late post; I don't usually read threads for tourneys I'm not attending. Yes, Brandeis is going to the Harvard site, since it's so much closer, so no, you do not have to provide for Feldman's presence.

Not according to the Census Bureau (http://www.census.gov/geo/www/us_regdiv.pdf). But seriously, what this tournament is doing that anybody south of DC can't do is to provide a better option for NYC-area teams than Boston, and that's a huge part of why this field is going to be so large and competitive.Frater Taciturnus wrote:What does this even mean? Then I'm curious, where are the bids coming from Princeton, Delaware, Penn, Rutgers, and Columbia to host major events like ACF Winter, Sectionals, and Fall, along with various mirrors? I'm legitimately curious because I have no involvement in this circuit, do these teams bid on major events or is the reason so much of the mid-Atlantic is centered on UMD and Virginia because those are the only teams consistently bidding on events?

Columbia was talking about putting a bid for ACF Regionals, but (I've heard this third-hand, so it might be wrong) apparently they're not allowed to reserve rooms more than a couple weeks in advance. I know we have room fees that make hosting a potentially money-losing proposition, but I could certainly imagine Penn bidding for something next year anyway (won't be my decision, but I might suggest something).Jeremy Gibbs Free Energy wrote:Then I'm curious, where are the bids coming from Princeton, Delaware, Penn, Rutgers, and Columbia to host major events like ACF Winter, Sectionals, and Fall, along with various mirrors? And, for the record, UMD is a fine place for tournaments, relatively convenient for just about everyone except maybe the NYC teams, and I've never complained about anything being held there.

So I take that as a "yes, Virginia and D.C. are the only places really bidding on things." Maybe instead of getting so worked up over having to go to Virginia for things, you should talk to the above listed teams about hosting more.

I heard this from the Columbia team directly and will confirm their difficulties in wanting to host but encountering institutional hurdles.Theory Of The Leisure Flask wrote:Columbia was talking about putting a bid for ACF Regionals, but (I've heard this third-hand, so it might be wrong) apparently they're not allowed to reserve rooms more than a couple weeks in advance.

If you do end up suggesting that Penn bid for something, it might be worth pointing out that so long as you don't lose more money hosting, say, ACF Regionals, than you would've spent sending a few teams to attend Regionals at another site, you've still come out ahead.Chris wrote:Columbia was talking about putting a bid for ACF Regionals, but (I've heard this third-hand, so it might be wrong) apparently they're not allowed to reserve rooms more than a couple weeks in advance. Announcements:
A campus map may be found here: http://www.swarthmore.edu/campusmap/bin/swfPage.php
Campus Public Safety has been notified that team vehicles will be parked in the Science Center Parking lots on Saturday and Sunday. In the above map, this is labeled as Dupont Parking, and you should come through the North Entrance.
Registration will take place in room 101 in the Science Center from 8:15 to 8:50 AM. For purposes of registration, we would very much appreciate if you paid in cash. Checks should be made out to me, Joshua Sokol. If neither cash nor a personal check is possible, please let me know via email and we will figure something else out.
Rounds will take place in Kohlberg Hall, which is directly across from the Science Center. We intend to start playing at 9:00 AM, and teams that are not in their rooms by 9:05 or so will take losses. I know this seems harsh both for unnecessary early-ness and strictness, and I apologize. However, we'd like to start bright and early and we intend to finish early as well.
Additional information (will be added here over the next few days):
We will provide coffee and breakfast during registration.
Maryland and UMBC will be staying with us overnight. Because apparently Saturday night is the biggest on-campus event of the year, we will probably try to participate in those festivities instead of starting our own. Alternate suggestions for activities are welcome.

Hey sorry but we just can't make it this weekend. Would have loved to help break our old mark of 22 teams, as people mentioned.

Hey, so for some strange reason, my emails to your address keep getting bounced back. I just want to confirm that Maryland is sending 2 teams, and perhaps inquire about the updated field/if there's a schedule or anything.

Re: ACF Regionals Mid-Atlantic at Swarthmore (2/28/09)
The Swarthmore email service has been down for the past hour or so for maintenance, so that might explain it. Two UMBC teams will not be joining us, so we have 17 teams.
We're currently planning to play 14 rounds. The schedule will be on handouts available during registration tomorrow morning. I hope to see everyone bright and early!

I know. I was referring to a previous email communication regarding the possibility of a third Maryland team, which was (due to the server crash) impossible to finalize anywhere else.
The field is listed higher up in the thread. You're there.
