ANNOUNCEMENT: Missouri Open Mirror (6/06/09) at Maryland
Maryland will be hosting a mirror of this year's Missouri Open on Saturday, June 6, 2009. The tournament will be head-edited by Charlie Dees of Mizzou (details on the announcement are here. The difficulty is reportedly going to be between regionals and nationals.
EDIT: Teams ARE in fact required to submit packets. Here is the schedule:
Well, I'm requiring packets from all mirror sites (and I believe have been from the get go, sorry if there was some confusion). If you send me a packet by:
April 4th there will be a $50 discount.
April 18th there will be a $25 discount.
May 2nd there will be $0 discounted or added.
May 9th there will be a $25 fee.
May 16th there will be a $50 fee
May 23rd there will be a $100 fee.
Any fees for packets submitted after this will be best described as "exponentially increasing" and "exorbitant" so beware.
I assume that this applies only to the normal "you have to write a packet" teams - teams who would be exempt from writing for other tournaments are presumably still exempt, so Charlie let me know if that's not right.
Cost:
Base Fee: $120
Buzzer Discount: -$5
Staffer Discount: -$10
<Possible packet discounts pending Deesification>
We will plan to host all side events held at the primary Missouri Open site. I know this includes Asian lit singles - is there anything else?
Maryland is considering writing a trash tournament to be held on this date, but given that Fake Trashionals has been pushed back, perhaps it would like to fold itself into Missouri Open weekend? Matt, if you'd like to do this, we'd be happy to run the tournament on Sunday.
This tournament is, as the name implies, open. Anyone can play, teams can be formed without regard to school attendance, etc.
To register, email me at [email protected]. We hope to see you there!

So, do you want to post a submission/discount schedule for this? Also, it's still optional, right?

In the odd event that I choose to attend this (two equally long drives to Columbia or College Park!), can I just clarify: would teams not required to submit a packet under ACF rules in fact be required to submit a packet to this tournament?

Yeah, we aren't using ACF rules other than for the distribution and actual gameplay. So all teams submit packets (unless you think you have an amazing reason and want to email me to negotiate about it).

Since I will actually be in the area that weekend, I was just wondering, does staffing the main tournament give you any discounts for the other tournaments?

Uh, yeah, I guess. . . I didn't imagine anyone would want to drop by just for Asian literature, but hey, why not.Since I will actually be in the area that weekend, I was just wondering, does staffing the main tournament give you any discounts for the other tournaments?

I meant the trash tournament if there was one, however, if there's any Central Asian literature, I might actually get a lit question right that wasn't off of fraud for probably the first time ever.

We've only received 3 packets so far, so I'm pretty concerned about not getting enough submissions. I guess email me to negotiate, Magin.

I have emailed Charlie about my concerns that there are at least 5 teams (6 if you count Jonathan) who want to attend this event, but aren't because they can't get packets together this quickly, at least not without exorbitant penalty. I really think demanding packets for this mirror is a bad idea - hopefully something can be worked out so that teams can pay a reasonable surcharge, or provide Charlie with livestock of some sort or something.

I also don't think I can find the time to write anything for this tournament as I'll still be finishing up my schoolwork by the time this is run. So if packet writing remains required I guess you can remove me from the free agents list.

David, I'm currently trying to figure out how to solve this problem - unfortunately, we have nowhere near enough submitted packets at the moment to pull this tournament together, so we do absolutely need things from our mirrors. However, I'll look into case by case basises or something.

Hey,
Everyone who would be interested in playing this event but has concerns about writing (that is, everyone in a similar boat as David/Jonathan/Chris), email me ASAP and let me know what writing you can do, when you can do that writing, and if you'd be interested in playing for some kind of no-writing penalty if you absolutely can't do any writing. I will do my best to coordinate this site and provide Charlie with the packets he needs to run the tournament, while letting everyone who wants to play this tournament do so.

Re: ANNOUNCEMENT: Missouri Open Mirror (6/06/09) at Maryland
Depending on Bruce's work schedule for this first weekend in June, we may be able to fly to DC and drive to UMCP. Charlie, have you received only three packets from teams which would attend the mirror at Maryland, or does your posting refer to just three packets submitted to enter your Missouri Open in general? I could complete a half-packet by the Sunday, May 24 +$100 deadline. Should Bruce be unable to make that trip, I would save my unsubmitted questions for the Chicago Open on July 25.

So, what's the story with packets and such? Assuming that a) more packets are needed, and b) it might be possible to perhaps submit things beyond the May 24th deadline, I'd be interested in teaming up with some other free agents to cobble something together. I'd be good for up to 7/7 by the 24th, or as much as 15/15 by June 1st.

I can't write anything this week (i.e. by the 24), but I could write somewhere between 5/5 and 10/10 by May 31st/June 1st. There's a chance I might be able to talk Tommy Casalaspi into the same amount.Theory Of The Leisure Flask wrote:So, what's the story with packets and such? If a) Dees is okay with a packet that late, and b) you can get Tommy on board (he knows some science, right?) then sounds like a plan.Tower Monarch wrote:I can't write anything this week (i.e. by the 24), but I could write somewhere between 5/5 and 10/10 by May 31st/June 1st. Hey, I've had some family issues come up, and likely won't be able to write any questions for this (and quite possibly won't be able to come down even if it was possible to play without writing). You can probably count me out, though if it's possible to pay a penalty and play anyway, then I'd still be interested (albeit 50/50 on availability).
Sorry for the inconvenience, and chances are I'll see y'all at SNF.

Re: ANNOUNCEMENT: Missouri Open Mirror (6/06/09) at Maryland
At this point I do not believe there is any benefit to forcing people who want to play to pay obscene penalties or write packets. I am certainly sympathetic to Charlie's plight (we really went through it with TIT submissions this year), and I know that people submitting stuff late or not submitting stuff has a become a pretty huge problem in quizbowl. But I also think that everyone who is in this boat for Missouri Open constantly writes for stuff, and is only not writing for this tournament right now because of unavoidable responsibilities. I'm sure that everyone who can contribute something to Charlie will do so, but I'd like to formally ask for a case by case amnesty declaration for the handful of people who would really like to attend. I certainly hope those people will try to kick some questions Charlie's way - I'm sure there will be writing going on the week before the tournament, so even if you don't have time then, I bet he'd appreciate it. It just seems like a bummer to me that we're running a tournament and turning people away for this kind of reason, and I really wish I had thought to discuss what would be done in this situation while finalizing the mirror agreement. If Charlie is immovable, well, so it goes, but I maintain hope that peace talks will prove productive.

Yeah, Tommy is too busy with school (I have no such problem) and I doubt I'll be able (or that willing) to write any significant amount (more than 5/5). Likewise sorry, and I am fine with waiting for Sun N Fun but will come if the fee is not outrageous (I don't know what this means to me yet.).Theory Of The Leisure Flask wrote:Hey, I've had some family issues come up, and likely won't be able to write any questions for this (and quite possibly won't be able to come down even if it was possible to play without writing). Yeah, I finally just don't care about late penalties for this or having all the teams from mirror sites send in packets, although I still would appreciate you doing this, or at least sending in a partial packet of 6/6 or 12/12 whatever you want to write.

So if I were to write around 5/5 between tonight and tomorrow, is there any preference as to subject? That is, what is needed?Jeremy Gibbs Free Energy wrote:Yeah, I finally just don't care about late penalties for this or having all the teams from mirror sites send in packets, although I still would appreciate you doing this, or at least sending in a partial packet of 6/6 or 12/12 whatever you want to write.
