Henry Darger Tournament of the Unreal, 7/11/09

Post by Matt Weiner » Mon May 04, 2009 11:51 am

I never really announced this so consider this your formal notification that I will be running the Henry Darger Tournament of the Unreal on Sunday evening, May 24, 2009, shortly following the conclusion of the National Scholastics Championship at George Mason University in Fairfax, VA on SNF weekend, if that's OK with Ahmad and local mirrors. This will be an event quite similar to last year's Gaddis or other "experimental" tournaments, in that it will consist exclusively of tossups and will have difficulty ranging from "noticeably hard" to "ludicrous," including several questions on things that amuse me but are in no way canonical or important. Powers and superpowers will likely be used since people seem to like them. Eligibility for this tournament is entirely open.

Each packet will contain at least 16 non-science tossups written by me, and 4 science tossups written by Andrew Alexander.

Sadly, I think Rob's tossup on "Flagpole Sitta" from last year's Chicago Open is the only recent appearance of Harvey Danger in good quizbowl.

10 or so rounds of ~20 tossups; if people stay focused the whole thing should take three to four hours.

I wrote a Harvey Danger tossup for TrashMasters a couple of years back; then again, that might well be your point...

...anyway, I'm about 75% likely to be present at this. I'd prefer to play, naturally, but if there's a shortage of staffers I don't think the field will miss my 5 PPG all that much.

EDIT: I'll confirm my availability for this, whether it be on one side of the moderator's table or the other.

Some updates:
1) Andrew Alexander will be providing science questions for this tournament. There will be a minimum of 3 science tossups in each round of 20, and most or possibly all will have the usual 4.
2) I am taking free reign to replace the geography tossup in each round with general knowledge, current events, uncategorizable nonfiction, quizbowl meta, or other things that I need a place for. There will still be at least 1 geography tossup somewhere in this packet set, but I promise no more at this time.

Hey, with only 10 people signed up and no one coming to GMU specifically to play this, I'm questioning whether it makes sense for me and my science collaborator to push to get the tournament done this week. If it's postponed I will offer it to Sun N Fun sites, since there's only one side event for that so far. If your heart would be broken by not being able to play this tournament this coming Sunday let me know and I'll take that into account when making a final decision.

Yeah, I'll play, and I concur that buckets of people will do so as well despite not having signed up. I guess I just sort of assumed that, since there are something like 10-20 NSC moderators who will be there already and generally always play anything, that critical mass was a given.

Well, it looks like after all of that, my PACE co-TDing duties and related matters need my attention this week, so I will have to hold off on this tournament regardless of where the interest is. I will be in touch with SNF tournament directors about it. Sorry for those who can't play it on Sunday, I hope you can make it to one of the mirrors for Ahmad's tournament.

So, my science writer for this tournament has given me no questions and is not responding to my attempts at communication.

Since I am definitely not writing this tournament again and want it to be distributed appropriately when it happens, I am postponing it to a to-be-determined future date at which science questions are available and returning to work on CO Lit and VCU Open. I have informed Maryland and Minnesota and they are pursuing alternate options for offering a third tournament this weekend, should people still desire one.

I would still be down to play this without the science, but if you feel strongly about having a fully distributed tournament, then I guess there's nothing for it but cancelling.
