I don't know how many people from the West Coast are going to the actual CO, but if this tournament was morphed into a VCU Open Mirror I'd very likely show up. I imagine you'd see less people going to a different site.

Hm, that's an interesting proposition. If it seems that we could get a better turnout at a later mirror of the VCU Open, I could switch things up.

Would anyone else on the West Coast prefer a VCU Open Mirror? The actual tournament is being held on August 8, I believe. We'd still probably hold a TRASH tournament that Sunday, too.

Another option if you move to a later date is a CaTO/TaCO mirror. It is the Sunday companion to VCU Open and is a little lower difficulty. I also have an all-music subject tournament that I am writing for that weekend that is certainly open for mirroring...

Looking at the CO Spreadsheet it seems like Andrew Yaphe is the only West Coast player currently planning on going to Chicago. Looking at ticket prices to Chicago compared to the San Francisco area, I might actually be more up for going to this mirror than the Chicago mirror. Thus, I retract my previous comment about making this a VCU Open mirror so long as we can find enough people to attend this.

Darwin and I will be going to Chicago as well, so it would be pretty cool if we could get a VCU Open mirror going.

For whatever it's worth, I can only attend a West Coast mirror of CO and Berkeley is extra-convenient, since that's where I'll be. Personally, I'd like to see BASQUE stay CO and see if we can also arrange a VCU Open mirror (which I'd attend if I can arrange some transit) separately. Also, what of Sun N Fun?

Being the only person from my school anywhere close to the west coast, I would love to come for this tournament as well as any possible trash tournament on Sunday, but would probably not be able to bring anyone else.

So far, it seems that most people who have a preference have chosen the July 25-26 Chicago Open mirror over the VCU Open mirror option.

Though, a few have said that if we could hold both, then they would attend both. Anyone who hasn't already let me know, please inform me if you would be interested in doing this, and I will see if it can be done.

I might be able to attend this tournament, though I leave the Bay Area the weekend of 8 Aug.

Hey Steven. So I'm good for both potential CO and VCU mirrors, not sure about the rest of the UCI quizbowl people. I'll let you know soon.

So is anyone looking for a team for the main Chicago Open event / trash tournament?

Caltech will come with 2 teams for both days. Also all 9 of us vote for VCU. Also that counts as 9 votes, not 1.

So Yeah Mike I will most likely need to be a part of a team. Not sure yet but it seems unlikely that anyone at UCI would be interested besides me.

I will likely be a free agent for the trash tournament (but will be staffing CO). Prospective teammates should be warned that I'm pretty much useless as a trash player, especially if someone already on the team has decent baseball knowledge.

I'm in need of teammates for the main event as well; all comers welcome!

If there are three people looking for a mediocre-to-moderate trash "generalist", I can fit that niche, but otherwise I'm willing to staff if it's needed.

E-mail me at dakarkra [at] yahoo [period] com, if you're interested.

First post has been updated with the current field and FA list for both tournaments.

Is anyone from Stanford reading this thread? Do you guys have any interest in attending BASQUE?

Despite the big vote by CalTech, it seems that keeping the July 25-26 tournament date is the best. There's some uncertainty with our staffers/players on the August 8-9 date, so our CO Mirror is the safest bet.

This doesn't mean that a VCU Open mirror can't happen though. So far, those who have said they would be interested in attending a VCU Open Mirror on August 8-9: Auroni, Jeremy Hixson, Siddharth Chandrasekhar, Marcus Luna. Berkeley would probably field a team.

Are there going to be any problems with the fact that I contributed questions to the Evan Adams packet for CO? Does this qualify me/my team for any discounts?

Assuming there aren't any problems, I'd be cool teaming up with you Marcus (and hopefully two other people).

I'm not going to the actual CO anymore but I am very likely to go home and then to BASQUE, so I guess I will sign up as an FA.

I'd like to join this renegade free agent team (Marcus and Mike) that's forming if you guys will have me. I also can bring a buzzer set if needed.

There were no plans for any discounts for contributing to CO packets. But if this changes I will let everyone know.

Jeremy also contributed to a CO packet. My plan was to not read the packets that anyone (so far only two people) have contributed to. I'm not quite sure how many packets there will be in this year's tournament at this moment, but last year there were 17. Is there any other way to get around this?

Updates:

- Added Steven Katz to the free agent list. Field should be current as of now.
- Andrew and I worked it out, and Sunday we'll be playing his TRASH tournament that will be played at Chicago Open. The entry fee we were preliminarily asking for ($100) has been reduced to an $80 entry fee per team.
- Updated the meeting room. We will be meeting in 101 Wheeler Hall

I'm sorry to hear that, Dan.

As far as free agents go, if nothing else, you guys probably can be added to a Berkeley team, since some of our players may be recruited into staffing.

Is there any interest here in running the literature side tournament on Saturday night?

I'll be playing BASQUE (as one of those "Stanford" teams, along with Brian LIndquist, Jeff Hoppes, and a possible mystery fourth). Also I'd be interested in the lit tournament Saturday night, if enough people want to do it.

The only interest I've received so far in the lit tournament is from Andrew, Brian, and Ruwani from our school. We have enough people to staff the lit tournament, but there doesn't seem to be enough people to play it as of right now. Is anyone else here interested in playing?

If you have enough staff, I can play instead. I'm not very good, but the lit tournament shouldn't be cancelled and I can get some enjoyment out of it.

Firstly: Stanford, are you planning on playing 1 or 2 teams? And are you bringing a buzzer(s)?
Secondly: Micah, are you guys bringing a buzzer?

And third:
It appears that we'll be running the literature tournament Saturday evening, after the Chicago Open academic tournament. It looks like it'll be a singles or doubles format, and we'd be running 2 or 3 rooms. I'll be reading, and I'll probably need to ask 1 of the listed people below to help read 1 other room. We technically need to be out of the rooms by 10PM, so hopefully we can finish by then. If we don't, hopefully the custodial staff will be nice and let us stick around if need be.

The people interested so far in the tournament: Andrew, Brian, Ruwani, Mike, Jeremy, Micah (maybe?), Alan (maybe?), Marcus, Jeff, and perhaps more.

I'll talk to the folks writing the tournament and I'll let you guys know about the financial details.

Thanks for the offer, but I think we'll be fine. With CalTech's 3 buzzers, and our mostly functioning buzzer (1/2 of the individual lights are out, but the lights on the central unit can still indicate who buzzed), and perhaps Stanford's buzzer, we should be more than set.
