KLEE: Minnesota Open Fine Arts Tournament

Post by Megalomaniacal Panda on Absinthe »

This is to formally announce KLEE: Dance You Monster to my Soft Song, a Fine Arts doubles tournament written by Aaron Rosenberg, Ted Gioia, Guy Tabachnick, and Shantanu Jha, with contributions by Chris White. It will be edited by both Ted and myself.

The distribution remains the same as the packets played at Harvard International, namely 30% painting, 30% classical music, 10% opera/ballet, 5% art film, 5% sculpture, 5% architecture, 5% jazz, 10% misc. This tournament will have a total of ten packets.

The cost will be $15 per player. Post here or email me at [email protected] (or Ted at [email protected]) to sign up, either as a free agent or with a teammate. If you'd like to mirror this tournament, send an email to either myself or Ted.

Edit: I mentioned this in a post lower down, but it bears repeating in the introductory post: none of the questions in this set were heard at Harvard International, so if you played on those four packets, you're safe.

This is going to be a doubles tournament, so post here when you form teams or if you are looking for teammates.

I am looking for a teammate.

I am not good, except for perhaps the art film distribution.

What is the relation of this tournament to the tournament held at HI? Is it mainly consisting of questions not used at that portion of the tournament? What's happening to the questions I submitted to that tournament?

The first four packets were played at HI; this version of Klee will consist of the six unused packets supplemented by four entirely new packets. Mike, after checking the google doc I think a couple of your questions are currently scattered throughout, and we plan on using them unless you have an objection.

Edit: to clarify, none of the questions that are being used for this tournament have been heard before.

This. Also, I'd love to play with someone. Preferably someone whose strengths lie in pre-1800 painting, but hey, any teammate would be fun.

Sure, I don't have any problem with this.

Anyway, since I've written and seen questions in this tournament, I'll staff.

Just so people know, I'm not running away MO weekend or anything; I just might have to head out at about 7PM to participate in some Diwali celebrations.

I will certainly play if I will be able to stick around.

Someone asked for the per packet distribution of the tournament. Enjoy.
- 6 Painting
- 6 Classical Music
- 1 Sculpture
- 1 Architecture
- 1 Jazz
- 1 Film
- 1.5 Opera / .5 Dance
- .5 Non-Western / Ancient Art
- .5 Art Theory/Criticism
- .5 Photography
- .5 Performance/Misc Art

I'll post the exact distribution for each category/subcategory over the full tournament when it's over.

I intend to play this, so I guess I'm looking for a partner. I would say I'm good at architecture and 20th century painting, and more or less adequate at other painting and sculpture. Anybody with any music knowledge would help.

One other note: the difficulty of this tournament will be close to ACF nationals, but it will also include some easier answers as well as some canon expansion.

Despite the incidence of "tournament that doesn`t password-protect packets is derailed by someone reading the wrong round" holding steady at 100%, the 9 round event happened and was won by Magin and Dees in undefeated fashion.

Yeah, but it didn't use password protection. Also I tended to forget that packets were being sent out and just read them straight out of the zip file.

I hope everyone enjoyed the set. It ended up more difficult than I would have liked and some of our attempts at writing world art questions didn't work as well as I kight of hoped but it seemed like some of them were still answered nonetheless. Jonathan Magin and Charlie Dees won the first game of an advantaged final against a team consisting of Mike Sorice and Ike Jose. I have all the stat sheets and full stats will be posted soon.

BTW, Some people didn't pay me for the event and if you don't go to school in the Northeast then I'll email you to figure something out.

Actually this isn't quite accurate. We went undefeated in the round robin, and Sorice lost 2 games in the round robin. Our game just happened to be the last of the night and was a de facto final game, but was not actually an additional match.
