TrashMasters at UT-Chattanooga 12/5/2009

Post by Your Genial Quizmaster »

This is a preliminary placeholder announcement, since people have been asking. Yes, there will be a TrashMasters on Sat., Dec. 5. John Kilby is taking over as Editor-in-Chief, while I'll remain the tournament director. John is working on a new improved distribution for the packets, but you can go ahead and start writing if you haven't already.

There will also be some trash-related activities Sunday morning 12/6 for those who are staying the weekend. If you are interested in bringing something to the table for Sunday, please let us know at utcquizbowl [at] gmail [dot] com.

Full details will follow soon.

TrashMasters XVII will be held at UT-Chattanooga on Sat., Dec. 5, 2009. The first trash tournament ever, and therefore by definition the longest-running, TrashMasters is an quizbowl-style tournament devoted to pop culture in all its trashy glory. The tournament is open to any teams meeting the requirements below, regardless of school status or affiliation.

We apologize for the late notice, for those who haven’t gotten the word in person or through the grapevine. Due to the lateness of the full official notice, we are making big changes to the fee structure for this year.

After twelve years with me as Editor-in-Chief, the torch has been passed to a new generation of trash fiends. John Kilby is taking the reins as Editor-in-Chief this year, while I will remain Tournament Director and genial quizmaster.

The change in editorship also naturally leads to some changes in packet specifications and distribution. John has posted the specifications at:

http://www.terminallytrivial.com/trashmasters/index.htm

The specs will be updated to reflect revised packet deadlines. Speaking of which…

FEES:
With submission of a full packet meeting specifications to john [dot] Kilby [at] gmail [dot] com by midnight Tuesday 11/24/09: $20
[Yes, you read that right, $20]
With submission of a full packet meeting specifications to john [dot] Kilby [at] gmail [dot] com between midnight Tuesday 11/24/09 and midnight Friday 11/27/09: $50
With submission of a full packet meeting specifications to john [dot] Kilby [at] gmail [dot] com between midnight Friday 11/27/09 and midnight Sunday 11/29/09: $80
With no packet submission, if we are notified by midnight Sunday 11/22/09 at both john [dot] Kilby [at] gmail [dot] com and utcquizbowl [at] gmail [dot] com that you wish to register without submitting a packet: $120
With no packet submission, if we are notified by midnight Sunday 11/29/09 at both john [dot] Kilby [at] gmail [dot] com and utcquizbowl [at] gmail [dot] com that you wish to register without submitting a packet: $150

OTHER DISCOUNTS:
- $10 for a full-time official (plus they get dinner on us at Provino’s Saturday night)
- $20 for preparing an audio, video, or other suitably trash side event for inclusion in the Sunday morning post-TM program. Materials for the side event do not need to be submitted in advance, but we ask that you declare your intent, give a general description of the event including estimated running time, and let us know of any technical needs by midnight Sunday 11/29/09. Please send this information to both john [dot] Kilby [at] gmail [dot] com and utcquizbowl [at] gmail [dot] com.

SCHEDULE: Registration will begin at 9 AM EDT 12/5/09, with play beginning at 10 AM. Tournament HQ will be 124 Holt Hall on the UTC campus; see directions below. (We will not be using the usual meeting place of Grote 129 because of ongoing renovations.)

SIDE EVENTS: There will of course be the music game we lovingly call K-Tel Hell, fit into the schedule sometime Saturday. We will also have one or more side events on Sunday morning 12/6; precise details will follow. We will finish the Sunday side events no later than 12:30 PM, for those who have travel schedules to maintain.

REGISTRATION: Regardless of the packet option you choose, please be sure to e-mail utcquizbowl [at] gmail [dot] com to let us know you are bringing a team.

DRIVING DIRECTIONS:
From Atlanta and points south -- take I-75 to Chattanooga, then I-24 west towards downtown, then follow the freeway splitoff for U.S. 27 North, downtown Chattanooga. From 27 North take the 4th Street exit, within sight of the Tennessee Aquarium. Go right on 4th St. (you have no choice) and follow it for ca. 1 mile. Go past the UTC Arena, after which E. 4th St. becomes part of E. 3rd St. After that, take the second right on Palmetto St. Go two blocks and turn right on Vine St. (just past the EMCS Building.) Just before the place where Vine St. is blocked off, the parking lot for Grote and Holt Halls is on the right.

From Knoxville and points north -- take I-75 to Chattanooga, then I-24 West; directions from there same as above.

From Nashville and points west/north: Take I-24 east to Chattanooga. As you round Moccasin Bend (freeway goes alongside river) watch for two exit lanes on the right; take the less rightward of the two, which will have signs above it for U.S. 27 N. Rest of directions are the same as above.

From Birmingham and points southwest: Take I-59 to the outskirts of Chattanooga, where it dead-ends into I-24. Get on I-24 East and follow the Nashville directions from there.

The final packet deadline is a bit more than 24 hours away, so here's a field update:

*Marc Summers’ White Sneakers (J.R. Fennell, Nathan Stalvey, Jennifer Webb)
*Zack and Cody Make a Porno (James Quintong, Brian Hight, Jeremy White, Mark Richey)
*Team Name Not Yet Submitted (Greg Weinstein, Mike Staley, Mark Franklin, Stacy Helton)
Team Name Not Yet Submitted (Michael Kearney, Dren Rollins, Megan Clancy, Chris Hendry)

*Packet submitted

There is also a potential fifth team (I'm waiting for confirmation). I've received a few freelance packets, so we should still have a tournament's worth of questions to play even if no other teams are coming.

That being said, there is still time to register and plenty of room left. If you have any questions, feel free to e-mail me (john [dot] kilby [at] gmail [dot] com) or the UTC team (utcquizbowl [at] gmail [dot] com).

I don't think I'm the only one who would like to see the stats (and packets, if cleared) from this.

Zack and Cody Make a Porno (Quintong et al.) went undefeated to win TrashMasters. Charlie will likely post the full results in the coming days.

I'd like to give a special thanks to Dallin Kelson, Yogesh Raut, Charles Martin Jr., and Robert Slade for writing freelance packets so that we only had a short day as opposed to an insanely short day.

If anyone has any question-related feedback, you can e-mail it to me (john [dot] Kilby [at] gmail [dot] com) or start a thread on the boards. For those who couldn't make it and are interested in seeing the questions, I'll have to check and see if Charlie is selling them. If he's not, I'll be happy to post the sets or send them to someone to host.

This post serves a two-fold purpose:

1) I continue to wonder if the packets can be distributed to any interested parties (or better yet, added to Wastebin)
2) What is being done for freelance writers in connection with this tournament (if nothing else, I'd like to see a list of all the movies that came up in packets so that I can add them to my list of movies to watch)?

It's kind of poor form for someone to write a freelance packet for a tournament and not even get a copy of the set in return.
